Spring-bite: a new device for jaw motion rehabilitation. A case report.

The present paper describes the design features, potential indications and a clinical application of a newly designed device for jaw motion rehabilitation, the Spring-Bite. This device is characterized by a first class lever mechanism, which allows performing passive jaw motion rehabilitation at constant load without an active participation by the patient. Spring-Bite was developed for the management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) hypomobility and its application may be much useful in the post-operatory phases of TMJ or orthognathic surgeries as well as in patients with reduced muscular forc

Cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1, with a CRLF1 level mutation, previously associated with Crisponi syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1 (CISS1) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis caused by mutations in the CRLF1 gene, characterized by profuse sweating when the ambient temperature is below 22°C and morphological alterations. CRLF1 mutations also cause Crisponi syndrome (CS), which presents neonatal muscle contractions, morphological disorders and alterations in the autonomous nervous system. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old man sought treatment for profuse sweating. His medical record included neonatal admission for generalized hypertonicity. Clinical examination revealed

Limitation of mouth opening caused by osteochondroma of the coronoid process.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondroma at the level of the coronoid process is unusual, causing a slowly progressive facial asymmetry and limitation of mouth opening. Histologically, it is a bone tumor covered by a thin capsule of cartilage. We present a literature review of cases published to date and present a new case in which osteochondroma originating in the coronoid process was associated with the formation of a cyst at the body of the zygoma, necessitating the reconstruction of the body of the zygoma. STUDY DESIGN: A 55-year-old woman had a bone tumor in the right malar region, producing a limitat

An unusual complication of mandibular distraction.

BACKGROUND: The authors present an unusual complication of mandibular distraction in a child with the curious condition of multiple pterygium syndrome is presented. CASE REPORT: The patient was a Caucasian male with severe pterygia in his neck. As a result of his limited mouth opening and restricted upper airway leading to obstruction, he underwent lengthening of his mandible by distraction, which significantly improved his breathing. During his follow-up, it was observed that an unusually elongated permanent molar was present in an abnormal position. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the nee

Histologic examination of pedicled buccal fat pad graft in oral submucous fibrosis.

PURPOSE: This report evaluates the wound healing process of buccal fat pad (BFP) grafted on a defect of the buccal mucosa for oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with limitation of mouth opening under the diagnosis of OSF were surgically treated by cutting the fibrotic bands on the buccal mucosa (10 bilateral and 6 unilateral). The defects created were then covered by a BFP graft. The bulging BFP was trimmed postoperatively on a weekly basis until it was fully epithelialized. The specimens were stained and examined microscopically. RESULTS: Inflammatory cell

An alternative explanation for the genesis of closed-lock symptoms in the internal derangement process.

Clinical and surgical data on 194 operated joints (135 patients) were used to substantiate a new concept challenging the presumed natural history of temporomandibular internal derangement (ID). A number of findings were incompatible with the traditional depiction of a progressive process based on gradual changes in disc position and shape. These findings were a lack or correlation between increasing age and the stages of the process; the percentage of patients in the third stage (closed lock) with limited opening (less than 25 mm) too severe to be caused solely by a nonreducible, displaced dis

Digitally Guided Intraoral Segmental Mandibulectomy and Fibula Flap Reconstruction for Locally Invasive Odontogenic Tumors.

Radical treatment of ameloblastoma and other benign locally invasive odontogenic tumors frequently requires mandibular segmentectomy followe … umors who prioritize scar-free reconstruction. However, it is not recommended for cases with severe trismus, extensive soft-tissue invasion, or those requiring cervical lymph node dissection. Overall, the protocol provides a reproducible framework for integrating digital surgical planning with minimally invasive intraoral mandibular reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Mandibular hypomobility is a condition in which the jaw joint is restricted due to various causes, including temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), ankylosis, head and neck infections and tumors, coronoid processes hyperplasia (CPH), and trismus. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the coronoid processes (CP) of patients diagnosed with CPH and other anatomical structures and to investigate how this affects temporomandibular hypomobility. Sculpting Solutions: A Case Report of Resection and Reconstruction in an Aggressive Mandibular Juvenile Ossifying Fibroma and Review of Literature.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare, benign, yet locally aggressive fibro-osseous lesion that primarily affects children and adolescents. This case report describes a 10-year-old female patient presenting with a three-month history of progressive swelling on the right lower third of her face, accompanied by trismus. Clinical examination revealed a firm, non-tender swelling extending from the right corner of the mouth to the angle of the mandible, with buccal cortical expansion and vestibular tenderness near the mandibular right second molar. Radiographic imaging demonstrated ill-defined…

Surgical difficulty and postoperative course of the third molar extraction under general anesthesia: An intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: Third molar extractions are one of the most common surgical procedures in the area of stomatology. Thus, the aim of this intervention trial is to determine the relationship between clinical parameters (pain, inflammation and trismus) and serum parameters (C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-6 and fibrinogen) that are modified in the first postoperative week, and the appearance of complications after extraction with general anesthesia, using the Pederson sc…

EHBP1L1 Frameshift Deletion in English Springer Spaniel Dogs with Dyserythropoietic Anemia and Myopathy Syndrome (DAMS) or Neonatal Losses.

Hereditary myopathies are well documented in dogs, whereas hereditary dyserythropoietic anemias are rarely seen. The aim of this study was to further characterize the clinical and clinicopathological features of and to identify the causative genetic variant for a dyserythropoietic anemia and myopathy syndrome (DAMS) in English springer spaniel dogs (ESSPs). Twenty-six ESSPs, including five dogs with DAMS and two puppies that died perinatally, were studied.
