BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) presents with diverse clinical manifestations and remains a diagnostic and public health challenge, particularly in high tuberculosis (TB) burden settings such as Ghana. Understanding its clinical spectrum and associated factors is essential for improved case detection and management. This study aims to describe the epidemiology, clinical spectrum, and associated demographic and clinical factors of EPTB in Ghana.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of TB cases seen at the Chest Clinic of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Ghana between Oc

Introduction Skeletal tuberculosis (TB) is a diagnostically challenging form of extrapulmonary TB (EPTB). Among EPTB, musculoskeletal or osteoarticular tuberculosis (OAT) represents 1-3% of all TB cases. This study evaluated the clinical patterns, diagnostic pathways, and treatment outcomes of skeletal TB cases managed under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP). Methods A retrospective review was conducted at the Subbaiah Institute of Medical Sciences, a tertiary-care center in Karnataka, India, including 20 patients with skeletal TB treated under NTEP between January 2022 and

BACKGROUND: Many surgeons have reported results similar to those of anterior debridement and bone grafting in treating spinal tuberculosis in the lumbar region using only a posterior approach. However, there is still no consensus regarding bone graft methods. This study aims to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of morselized versus structural iliac bone grafts in the treatment of lumbar tuberculosis via one-stage posterior surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed with 82 patients with lumbar tuberculosis who had undergone posterior-only debridement, bone grafting, an

Central Nervous System (CNS) Tuberculosis (TB) is rare. It manifests in many forms, but the association between intramedullary abscess and multifocal Pott's disease is exceptional. We report the case of a 23-year old female patient diagnosed with multifocal Pott's disease at L2-L3 and L4-L5 based on computed tomography (CT) scan of the spine. She received antituberculous treatment. Two months after the beginning of treatment spinal cord compression occurred. Medullary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed, which showed intramedullary abscess at T4. She underwent surgery with drainage

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous myelitis is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis (TB) that is usually caused by hematogenous spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Neurosyphilis is a neurological disease that occurs when Treponema pallidum invades the brain or the spinal cord. Individually, these two diseases involving the spinal cord are rare and cases of concurrent tuberculous transverse myelitis and asymptomatic neurosyphilis have seldom been reported.
CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old man presented with numbness and pain of both lower limbs for 2 wk and dysuria for 1 wk. Syphilis serology and cere

While autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients with spinal TB, little is known of the consequences. We matched 25 paraplegic patients with thoracic spine tuberculosis scheduled for spinal surgery (Group S) with 25 nontubercular American Society of Anesthesiologists Grade I patients scheduled for nonspinal surgeries (Group C) under identical operative conditions. All patients underwent four autonomic tests in the operating room, and a preoperative adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test was performed for patients in Group S. Compared to Group C, Group S had higher resting heart

Tuberculosis is an ancient disease that has accompanied humanity for the last three thousand years and is considered the oldest infectious disease that still exists. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacillus was spread worldwide due to human migrations, and there is archaeological evidence of spinal tuberculosis cases in Egyptian and Andean mummies, as well as texts that attributed the disease to social factors before suspecting its infectious nature. Throughout its history, humans have dealt with this pathology by developing unusual and ineffective therapies, leading to a significant increase i

The management of a patient with spinal cord compression can be complicated and challenging; however, this challenge becomes even more pronounced if the patient presents without a known cancer diagnosis in the context of progressive neurologic symptoms. Unless potential causes such as infection/tuberculosis are included in the differential diagnosis of an apparent unknown primary, then the correct diagnosis may be incorrectly determined.

Subacute paraplegia progressing over 3 months due to spinal cord compression was the presenting symptom of tuberculous meningitis in this patient with a normal chest x-ray film and no radiological or autopsy evidence of Pott's vertebral tuberculosis. The obstructive myelopathy was the result of proliferative granulomatous meningitis. A review of the literature indicates that this is a very unusual presentation of tuberculous meningitis.

Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis is a post-primary form of tuberculosis. It has high mortality and morbidity rates despite early diagnosis and treatment. CNS tuberculosis can manifest as subacute/chronic meningitis, parenchymal tuberculous lesions, and spinal tuberculosis. Hematogenous spread of tuberculous bacilli to the brain results in the development of so called "rich foci" on the pial surface, ependyma, and grey-white matter junction. Rupture of these "rich foci" into the subarachnoid space triggers an intense granulomatous inflammatory reaction. Tuberculous meningitis can manif

Any organ system is prone to extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) development, including the spine. Spinal TB is a rare involvement, although considered one of the most dangerous forms of skeletal TB (STB). A 31-year-old man, who is a healthcare worker, presented to the outpatient Orthopedic Spine clinic at King Abdulaziz Medical City-Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs (KAMC-MNGHA) Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with a complaint of axial neck and upper back pain whose condition deteriorated quickly, necessitating urgent admission for surgical treatment in the form of cervical spine decompression a

Injury to the spinal cord and kyphosis are the two most feared complications of tuberculosis of the spine. Since tuberculosis affects principally the vertebral bodies, anterior decompression is usually recommended. Concomitant posterior instrumentation is indicated to neutralise gross instability from panvertebral disease, to protect the anterior bone graft, to prevent graft-related complications after anterior decompression in long-segment disease and to correct a kyphosis. Two-stage surgery is usually performed in these cases. We present 38 consecutive patients with tuberculosis of the spine

Background: South Korea continues to report a considerable burden of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). Bedaquiline-containing regimens are recommended for multidrug-resistant pulmonary TB, but evidence regarding the optimal treatment for extrapulmonary manifestations such as spinal TB remains limited. Case presentation: Herein, we report two cases of drug-resistant tuberculous spondylitis that were successfully managed using bedaquiline-containing regimens. Case 1 involved a 67-year-old man who was receiving chemotherapy for lymphoma and had a history of spinal TB treated 20 years earlier. The

PURPOSE: A retrospective study was conducted to determine the beneficial effect of posterior mono-segmental fixation, combined with anterior debridement and strut graft for the treatment of mono-segmental lumbar spine tuberculosis.
METHODS: From February 2002 to February 2008, a total of 34 cases with mono-segmental lumbar spine tuberculosis were treated by posterior mono-segmental fixation, combined with anterior debridement and strut graft. The degree of damage to the patients' vertebral bodies was 1/3-2/3 height. Antituberculous therapy was performed both before and after surgery.

A male refugee from the Middle East was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and Pott's disease with paravertebral abscess. After starting the standard regimen, the sputum culture converted to negative and the patient's general condition improved. Six weeks later, the patient presented with clinical worsening of known symptoms, new appearance of focal neurological deficits and progress of radiological features showing progression of the paravertebral abscess. Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB-IRIS) was presumed, and treatment with high-dose steroi

An unusual case of an intradural, extramedullary spinal cord tuberculoma, as a complication of tuberculous meningitis caused by a strain susceptible to major anti-TB drugs, is described in a previously healthy, HIV-negative, 27-year-old male. The tuberculoma was detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while the patient was under conventional anti-tuberculous (anti-TB) therapy. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Despite the anti-TB treatment and the surgical resection, intramedullary spreading occurred. Finally, a favorable response was achieved by prolongation of treatment accompanie
