OBJECTIVE: To clarify the performance of liquid-based cytology (LBC) and conventional methods of preparing cervical specimens for cytological screening.
STUDY DESIGN: We studied 236,511 patients who participated in a population-based cervical cancer screening program conducted in the Niigata prefecture between 2005 and 2008. The percentage of unsatisfactory specimens and the disease detection rate were compared between specimens prepared by LBC and conventional methods.

AIM: Our aim was to summarize our and foreign experience in screening of cervical cancer, using conventional PAP smear and liquid-based cytology-LBC.

Cancer patients suffer from vaginal dryness and dyspareunia earlier and longer than the general population, with more severe and distressing symptoms. Life-style advices are the first step and vaginal lubricants can be tried, but they can't completely relieve atrophic symptoms. The most effective therapy is use of vaginal estrogens, but compliance and management are particularly difficult in estrogen sensitive cancer patients because of their systemic absorption. Compliance can be improved if they are begun at a very low dose and gradually increased until the lowest effective dose is reached.

Primary vaginal carcinoma in uterovaginal prolapse is a rare entity. We report a case of an 84-years-old lady, who presented with long standing vaginal ulcer in association with third degree uterovaginal prolapse. Incisional biopsy was taken from the ulcer. Histopathological examination showed a large cell keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma.

An unusual case of non-puerperal uterine inversion is presented. The patient, a 37 year old multipara who had been earlier diagnosed with uterine fibroids, subsequently developed a protrusion from the vagina having declined surgery. The mass had become necrotic and infected at the time of presentation. Uterine inversion was diagnosed clinically and further confirmed at surgery where a vaginal hysterectomy was carried out. BACKGROUND: Malignant transformation of endometriosis is an infrequent complication of endometriosis. Extragonadal disease is uncommon.
CASE: 55-year-old female presented with postmenopausal bleeding. Physical examination revealed a 2-cm polypoid lesion at the posterior vaginal apex, which was found to be a moderately differentiated invasive adenocarcinoma. Final pathology at the time of definitive surgery demonstrated a clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina arising in vaginal endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: To present a female patient who lived 5 years after total pelvic exenteration (TPE).
CASE REPORT: The female patient underwent TPE due to retrovesicovaginal fistula as a consequence of locoregional irradiation after the operation for the malignoma of the vaginal part of the uterus. In the formation of Bricker conduit, the ureter antireflux was achieved by the application of the "tobacco sack muff" made of the intestines around the ureter. By the use of this technique, the occurrence of pyelonephritis, as the leading cause of death in such patients, was prevented.

Ovariohysterectomy and surgical excision of a vaginal leiomyoma were performed in a bitch exhibiting continuous bleeding from the vulva. Following excision of the tumour, urine retention and urinary incontinence developed. Treatment using drugs and an indwelling catheter was unsuccessful in correcting the disorders and chronic cystitis developed after long-standing urine stagnation in the bladder. The authors resorted to undertaking partial cystectomy in order to correct the condition, which resulted in reduced urine retention and improved micturition.

Unilateral ectopic ureter was diagnosed by endoscopic examination in an 18-month-old filly examined because of chronic urine dribbling. Intramuscular administration of azosulfamide discolored the urine and enhanced visualization of the ectopic ureter. Endoscopy proved valuable in determining that only one ureter entered the urinary bladder and in locating the ectopic ureter in the ventral portion of the vagina.

A 23-year-old woman presented with vulvar pain and dyspareunia 1.5 years after a Stevens-Johnson syndrome. A red friable lesion was identified at the vestibule and lower third of the vagina. The histologic diagnosis was adenosis with a tubal glandular epithelium. The possible histogenesis of this lesion is discussed with a review of the embryology of the lower genital tract.

The efficacy of the MiMark endometrial cell sampler in the cytological assessment of endometrium was evaluated in 101 patients with postmenopausal bleeding. The apparatus was successful in daignosing all but one of the endometrial carcinomas in the series. Reports of its accuracy in diagnosing endometrial hyperplasia and other endometrial pathology cannot be substantiated.
