Magnetric resonance imaging in two young females with abdominal pain revealed vaginal atresia with massive hematocolpos but a normal cervix and uterine body. Information obtained with MRI was superior to ultrasound and CT and is suggested as the examination of choice prior to surgical correction.

Despite the long history of vaginal douching and its estimated practice by more than 67 million U.S. women, little is known about who those women are or why they douche. We addressed these questions by studying 618 women from urban gynecology practices. Fifty-nine percent had douched at some time, with the most frequent reason given as hygiene. Twenty eight women with suspicion for extrauterine pregnancy were examined by a vaginal transducer. Extrauterine pregnancy was diagnosed in 18 of them, which was confirmed at the operation. There were no echographic data for tubal pregnancy in 10 of the women. Their further follow-up rejected the presence of extrauterine pregnancy. Three tubal pregnancies were discovered by routine monitoring of ovarian cycles. The immediate proximity of the vaginal transducer to the examined organs in the pelvis gives a possibility for exact topical diagnosis.

The development of a large vaginal stone in a 25-year-old female, correlated with vesicovaginal fistula, is presented. The stone, composited of struvite and carbonate apatite, formed around non-absorbable surgical suturing material in urine with urease producing (P. mirabilis) bacterial infection. The stone was removed by simple lithotripsy technique. Attention is taken for the importance of stone prevention.

The incidence of anorectal complications following vaginal delivery was studied in 20,500 women. One thousand forty (5 percent) of all normal vaginal deliveries resulted in episiotomy with third- and fourth-degree extension or a fourth-degree perineal tear. There were 1365 vaginal hysterectomies performed at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Novi Sad. Morcellation was applied in 162 (11.9%) patients. It was most often applied in the group of patients from 40 to 49 years of age and in the sixth decade of life (27.2%; 44 cases). The vaginal absorption of micronized oestradiol/progesterone from a hydrophilic matrix system was investigated before and after 10 days of treatment in 7 post-menopausal women with an average age of 56.1 yr. Oestradiol and progesterone levels were measured on days 1 and 11 before administration and 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 h afterwards by radioimmunoassay. Peak values were seen 6-12 h after administration. This finding differs from those of other investigations. Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and androgen concentrations were unchanged after 10 days of treatment.

A case report of vaginal calculus formation in a nine-year-old girl with myelodysplasia is presented. Etiologic factors in the formation of such calculi include fistulous communication between the vagina and the bladder, neuropathic urethrovesical dysfunction, anatomic conditions causing vaginal outlet obstruction, and/or vaginal pooling of urine and urease-producing bacterial infection. A correct preoperative diagnosis can be made by using oblique x-ray films and cystoscopy. Surgical treatment is simple and successful.

Vaginal delivery may predispose to bacteriuria, as it entails repeated vaginal examination, compression of the bladder and sometimes urethral catheterization. One hundred and forty pregnant women were studied. Three samples of urine were used for cultures; the first at start of labor, the second 24 h after labor, and the third 14 days later.
