INTRODUCTION: The second most frequent cause of autosomal recessive nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss (AR-NSHL) worldwide is a biallelic pathogenic alteration of the STRC (stereocilin) gene, also named DFNB16. The type and severity of hearing impairment in DFNB16 patients were studied thoroughly, while information on a detailed examination of their vestibular function is still lacking. Our aim was to characterize the vestibular status of patients with biallelic pathogenic variants in STRC by performing a complete up-to-date test battery.
METHODS: Eight AR-NSHL patients, aged 6-37 (mean

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the second most common cause of developmental delay after Down syndrome. Impaired cognitive development is highly prevalent, but also motor abnormalities such as hypotonia and delays in achieving motor milestones are described. Instability is frequently detected in children, adolescents, and adults and is mostly attributed to their limited motor performance. Until now, vestibular function has not been investigated in these patients, despite the growing evidence that they often have inner ear malformations. The aim of this prospective study was to id

BACKGROUND: Falls in elderly patients are associated with morbidity, mortality, and cost to the healthcare system. The development of falls risk assessment programs have represented a method of responding to what is known about injurious falls. The multidimensional assessments involve the comparison against normative data of a patient's performance on metrics known to influence the likelihood of future falls. The factors assessed usually include falls and medication history, measures of mentation, depression, orthostatic hypotension, simple or choice reaction time, gait stability, postural sta

Background: Allylnitrile is a compound found in cruciferous vegetables and has the same lethality and toxic effects as the other nitriles. In 2013, a viable allylnitrile ototoxicity mouse model was established. The toxicity of allylnitrile was limited through inhibition of CYP2E1 with trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (TDCE). The allylnitrile intoxication model has been extensively tested in the 129S1 mouse strain for vestibular function, which showed significant HC loss in the vestibular organ accompanied by severe behavioral abnormalities. However, the effect of allylnitrile on auditory function re

The advent of cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (CVEMPs) marked a milestone in clinical vestibular testing because they provided a simple means of assessing human otolith function. The availability of air-conducted (AC) sound and bone-conducted vibration (BCV) to evoke CVEMPs and development of a new technique of recording ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (OVEMPs) have increased the complexity of this simple test, yet extended its diagnostic capabilities. Here we highlight the evidence-based assumptions that guide interpretation of AC sound- and BCV-evoked VEMPs and th

Vertigo and balance impairment are the primary symptoms of vestibular impairment. These symptoms affect an individual's activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL). In patients with stroke, vestibular symptoms vary depending on the area of damage, making it crucial to assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation (VR) according to each symptom and affected region. Here, we aimed to report the progress of balance function and vestibular symptoms after VR in a patient with left cerebellar infarction. A 50-year-old male patient with left cerebellar infar

IMPORTANCE: Given the rising prevalence of patients with dementia and those at risk for it, early identification is prioritized. As vestibular dysfunction is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may contribute to its onset, vestibular assessment may yield an opportunity in early dementia screening.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review structures and compares the different raw outcome measures used to assess vestibular function while comparing older adults with preserved cognition to individuals with cognitive impairment, either suffering from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or AD.

The key signs and symptoms of vestibular neuritis are rotatory vertigo with an acute onset lasting several days, horizontal spontaneous nystagmus (with a rotational component) toward the unaffected ear, a pathologic head-impulse test toward the affected ear, a deviation of the subjective visual vertical toward the affected ear, postural imbalance with falls toward the affected ear, and nausea. The head-impulse test and caloric irrigation show an ipsilateral deficit of the vestibuloocular reflex. Vestibular neuritis is the third most common cause of peripheral vestibular vertigo. It has an annu

In hearing individuals, vestibular and visuo-spatial functions seem to be functionally linked. Previous studies have suggested that congenitally deaf individuals are at a higher risk for vestibular problems, which in hearing adults have often been found to be associated with impairments in visuo-spatial processing. However, communicating in a sign language provides extensive practice in visuo-spatial processing, which might counteract negative effects of vestibular impairments. Here, we investigated whether the functional link between vestibular and visuo-spatial functions is mandatory, that i

BACKGROUND: Superficial siderosis (SS) is caused by repeated or continuous bleeding into the subarachnoid space that results in iron from hemoglobin (hemosiderin) being deposited on the surface of the brain. Clinically, the condition is characterized by sensorineural deafness, ataxia, and pyramidal signs. However the mechanism of peripheral vestibular disturbance was not revealed. We show the vestibular function of SS patients, and shed light on saccule-inferior vestibular nerve.
METHODS: Over the past 9 years, 5 patients were definitively diagnosed with SS by MRI in our department. These pat

Mouse models are relevant to study functionality of genes involved in human hearing and vestibular disorders; however, other pre-clinical models including organoids could be more suitable depending on the gene and its homology across species. While some mouse models replicate human hearing phenotypes, models for vestibular disorders like Meniere Disease (MD) are lacking. We aimed to identify genes associated with auditory and vestibular phenotypes (AVP) in humans and mice to prioritize candidate genes for further MD research. A systematic review was conducted extracting data from PubMed, Scopu

The review considers the results of domestic and foreign studies of modern neurophysiological diagnosis of vestibular disorders in migraine and epilepsy. Currently, there is a large number of physiological and clinical methods to evaluate the functions of the peripheral and central parts of the vestibular sensory system. However, among the tests, the samples for the assessment of the physiological state of horizontal semicircular canals and associated stem canals predominate. In recent years, neurophysiological techniques that reflect the work of the structures of the nervous system, previousl
