Prediction of retinopathy of prematurity using machine learning models.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of neonates at risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is essential to prevent vision loss. The goal of this study was to develop, test, and validate machine learning (ML) models to predict which newborns will develop ROP and require treatment. METHODS: A real-world, de-identified, clinical dataset including 23,404 medical records from 9205 individuals was abstracted, curated, and processed from 25 newborn care units in Odisha, India. A sequential two-step strategy was used: STEP 1 used demographic, perinatal, laboratory, and NICU variables to predict the dev

Clusters in craniofacial microsomia and microtia according to facial morphology and craniofacial anomalies.

UNLABELLED: Associated craniofacial malformations such as ocular anomalies and macrostomia are frequently seen in craniofacial microsomia (CFM). This study assessed associations between objectively measured facial morphology and clinically observed craniofacial malformations in patients with CFM in order to identify clinically significant patient clusters based on these characteristics for preferential screening purposes. In this multicenter cross-sectional cohort study, facial morphology was assessed from three-dimensional (3D) photographs using asymmetry index (ASI) and facial signature (FS)

Evidence for a new locus for X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (RP23).

PURPOSE: X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP) is a degenerative disease of the retina characterized in the early stages of disease by night blindness as a result of rod photoreceptor loss, progressing to severe disease with loss of central vision by the third decade in affected males. XLRP displays exceptional genetic heterogeneity, with five reported loci on the human X-chromosome. To investigate the level of heterogeneity for XLRP in the patient pool in the current study, extensive haplotype analysis, linkage analysis, and mutation screening were performed. METHODS: Haplotype analysis of a

Deep Learning Detection of Sea Fan Neovascularization From Ultra-Widefield Color Fundus Photographs of Patients With Sickle Cell Hemoglobinopathy.

IMPORTANCE: Adherence to screening for vision-threatening proliferative sickle cell retinopathy is limited among patients with sickle cell hemoglobinopathy despite guidelines recommending dilated fundus examinations beginning in childhood. An automated algorithm for detecting sea fan neovascularization from ultra-widefield color fundus photographs could expand access to rapid retinal evaluations to identify patients at risk of vision loss from proliferative sickle cell retinopathy. OBJECTIVE: To develop a deep learning system for detecting sea fan neovascularization from ultra-widefield color

[Glaucoma screening--justified or not justified?].

In explaining the damages of primary open-angle glaucoma, the elevated eye pressure was assumed to be the central causative factor. But epidemiological research found high proportions of the following clinical entities: only elevated pressure without further damages (called ocular hypertension), and only glaucomatous damages without high pressure (called normal- or low-pressure glaucoma). These facts made the pressure-theory doubtful, and therefore it had to be modified. Some authors, though, doubt the general validity of the pressure-theory, and postulate other models for the etiology of glau

Beyond the clinic: a community-embedded, multidomain framework for early detection of glaucoma.

Glaucoma remains one of the leading causes of acquired irreversible blindness worldwide, with normal-tension glaucoma representing the dominant subtype in Japan and several East Asian populations. The insidious, asymptomatic progression of this condition, combined with the demonstrated inadequacy of intraocular pressure alone as a screening criterion, creates a critical gap between disease burden and case detection. Population-based epidemiological studies consistently reveal that the majority of individuals with glaucoma are undiagnosed. Two responses have been suggested: incorporation of ret
