An EMA analysis of the effect of increasing word length on consonant production in apraxia of speech: a case study.

The effect of increasing word length on the articulatory dynamics (i.e. duration, distance, maximum acceleration, maximum deceleration, and maximum velocity) of consonant production in acquired apraxia of speech was investigated using electromagnetic articulography (EMA). Tongue-tip and tongue-back movement of one apraxic patient was recorded using the AG-200 EMA system during word-initial consonant productions in one, two, and three syllable words. Significantly deviant articulatory parameters were recorded for each of the target consonants during one, two, and three syllables words. Word len

Membrane fatty acids, reading and spelling in dyslexic and non-dyslexic adults.

Increasing evidence implicates functional deficiencies or imbalances of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in dyslexia. The associations between literacy skills and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid status were examined. 32 dyslexics and 20 controls completed standardised tests of reading and spelling and gave venous blood samples for analysis of the polar lipid fatty acid composition of red blood cell (RBC) membranes. Relationships between literacy skills and omega-3 and omega-6 concentrations were examined using rank-order correlations. Better word reading was associated with higher total omega-3

Breast imaging and reporting data system (BIRADS) magnetic resonance imaging illustrated cases.

Illustrated cases are presented here, for training the reader to BIRADS MRI. This article offers guidance in integrating findings from the different MR sequences, morphology and kinetics of an abnormal enhancement: report organization, use of lexicon for describing the detected lesion, final assessment with BI-RADS assessment categories.

A computerized treatment of dyslexia: benefits from treating lexico-phonological processing problems.

Two hundred sixty-seven 10- to 14-year-old Dutch children with dyslexia were randomly assigned to one of two samples that received a treatment for reading and spelling difficulties. The treatment was computer-based and focused on learning to recognise and use the phonological and morphological structure of Dutch words. The inferential algorithmic basis of the program ensured that the instruction was highly structured. The present study examined the reliability of the effects of the treatment, and provided an evaluation of the attained levels of reading and spelling by relating them to normal l

Quality of phonological representations, verbal learning, and phoneme awareness in dyslexic and normal readers.

This study of dyslexia was concerned with the quality of phonological representations of lexical items. It extended the studies of verbal learning in dyslexia from learning new vocabulary items (pseudo-names) to the learning of more well-specified variants of known words. The participants were 19 dyslexic adolescents in grades 4 to 6 and 19 younger normal readers in grade 2 matched on single word decoding. The dyslexics were significantly outperformed by the reading-age controls in non-word reading and in phoneme awareness. The dyslexics also took longer time to learn to associate a set of pse…

[Grammatical complexity and cohesion mechanisms in the communicative pragmatics of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to compare the grammatical structures and cohesion used in the narrative sequencing of real events by children with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 27 children, between the ages of seven and eight, took part in the study; 15 of them had the combined subtype of ADHD and 12 participated as a control group. To obtain the narration the children were asked to talk about two real events they had experienced: 'What happened the last time you went to the doctor's?' and 'Have you ever been bitten by an insect?'

The relationship between executive function and verbal memory in Parkinson's disease.

A growing body of evidence suggests that the various cognitive symptoms found in Parkinson's disease (PD) are secondary to executive dysfunction. Studies addressing this possibility for memory impairment specifically have not included measures of working memory nor have they ruled-out potential mediating variables such as overall level of cognitive impairment or depression. The purpose of this study was to include measures of these variables in determining the relationship between multiple aspects of executive function and delayed verbal recall in 32 idiopathic PD patients. Results were consis

Observational learning and the formation of classes of reading skills by individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

We investigated whether individuals with developmental disabilities will demonstrate stimulus classes after observing another individual demonstrate the prerequisite conditional discriminations. In Experiment 1, participants learned conditional discriminations among dictated words, pictures, and printed words. They also observed a model without disabilities demonstrate conditional discriminations among a different set of dictated words, pictures, and printed words. The classes assigned to each participant belonged to a larger superordinate category, as did the classes assigned to each model. T

Anterior-posterior beta asymmetries in dyslexia during lexical decisions.

High-density EEG was recorded in 12 compensated dyslexics, 6 classified as dysphonetic and 6 as dyseidetic, and in 12 matched controls while they carried out a lexical-decision task. Relative to normal controls, dysphonetics showed higher beta power in anterior relative to posterior regions, while dyseidetics showed higher beta power in posterior relative to anterior regions. Further, controls (but not dyslexics) showed a positive correlation between performance on the task and the ratios of both left-to-right and anterior-to-posterior beta asymmetry. According to the dual-route theory of read

Lip EMG activity during vowel production in apraxia of speech: phrase context and word length effects.

This investigation examined the timing relationships of EMG activity underlying vowel production in 2 normal individuals and in 2 individuals with marked-to-severe apraxia of speech of approximately two-and-one-half years duration. The timing of lip muscle activity was investigated in monosyllabic words embedded in phrases and in syllable word stems as a function of changes in word length. Specifically, the onset and offset of EMG activity of lip muscles used for production of /u/ in the monosyllables and word stems were examined. The results revealed that the relative amounts of time devoted

Controlled and automatic information processing in senile dementia: a review.

The evidence on cognitive decline in senile dementia is reviewed with respect to the distinction between controlled and automatic processing. It is argued that controlled processing, which requires the attentional resources of the individual, declines in early senile dementia. However, automatic processing, which does not require attentional resources, is well maintained until late in the disorder. Implications of this view are drawn for the development of effective screening instruments which can be used for the early detection of dementia in the general population.

Positive Peer Groups Support Preschoolers' Word Learning.

Children learn language from their social partners, and differences in the behavior of these social partners can influence language learning outcomes. The literature largely focuses on adult caregivers; however, there is less clarity regarding the extent to which the social behavior of peers might also impact children's language learning. Children spend a large proportion of their time with peers once they enter preschool; peers are thus an important source of input for learning. Moreover, preschoolers are not just interacting with individual peers but also with groups of peers. To explore the

Training word learning in toddlers: Translation equivalents are more challenging to learn than native language words and facilitate working memory growth.

The present study aimed to determine whether teaching translation equivalents to monolingual toddlers would lead to a greater increase in executive functioning than if taught words in their native language. Children completed a 12-week training program during which nine novel words were taught weekly in children's native language (control group) or in a second language (experimental group). The participants' executive functioning was compared both pre- and post-intervention using the Early Executive Functions Questionnaire. Results suggest that learning translation equivalents is more difficul

Interactive Book Reading to Accelerate Word Learning by Kindergarten Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Incorporating Retrieval-Based Practice Into Training.

PURPOSE: Laboratory-based word learning research demonstrates that retrieval-based practice supports learning and retention more than passive training strategies. The goal of the current study was to determine whether incorporating retrieval-based practice into an interactive book reading intervention contributed to better learning and retention for children with developmental language disorder (DLD) than a more passive version. METHOD: Kindergarten children with DLD (N = 37) completed the intervention administered twice a week for a total of 15 sessions. The between-participants conditions v
