Both Cryptococcus gattii and Coccidioides can cause debilitating diseases if not identified early. Standard surgical therapy for most patients with upper tract transitional-cell carcinoma (TCC) is total nephroureterectomy with excision of an ipsilateral cuff of bladder; this procedure is performed through two separate or one long abdominal incision. In a case-control study of thyroid cancer in women in western Washington, the card-back system was used to contact patients. Demographic characteristics and reproductive history of 124 cases who returned a card and 35 who did not were compared, and were found to differ with respect to various reproductive and demographic factors. From 1965 to 1975, 452 total laryngectomies were performed at the Washington University Medical Center, St. Louis, Mo. During this period, 33 stomal recurrences were diagnosed. These are clinicopathologically analyzed with regard to tumor size, site, histopathology and original surgical procedure. Homeless veterans are likely to experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Homelessness itself is traumatic, and PTSD may exacerbate homelessness risk for veterans. Often, PTSD goes untreated in this subpopulation of veterans. The prevalence of HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection among justice-involved persons is high. The validity of self-reported HCV status in this population has important public health implications, yet has not been studied. Of 37 female adolescent prostitutes and 63 other females held in the King County, Washington, juvenile detention facility, 81 (81%) complained of vaginal discharge, and only eight (8%) had no genitourinary symptoms. The prevalence of genital infections among prostitutes and nonprostitutes was similar.
