Potential role of viruses in white plague coral disease.

White plague (WP)-like diseases of tropical corals are implicated in reef decline worldwide, although their etiological cause is generally unknown. Studies thus far have focused on bacterial or eukaryotic pathogens as the source of these diseases; no studies have examined the role of viruses. Using a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and 454 pyrosequencing, we compared 24 viral metagenomes generated from Montastraea annularis corals showing signs of WP-like disease and/or bleaching, control conspecific corals, and adjacent seawater. TEM was used for visual inspection of dis…

White matter hyperintensities predict amyloid increase in Alzheimer's disease.

Impaired amyloid clearance probably contributes to increased amyloid deposition in sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Diminished perivascular drainage due to cerebral small-vessel disease (CSVD) has been proposed as a cause of reduced amyloid clearance. White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are considered to reflect CSVD and can be measured using fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Amyloid deposition can be determined in vivo using Pittsburgh compound B ([11C]PiB) positron emission tomography (PET). We aimed to elucidate the association between WMH and …

Bright white light emission from ultrasmall cadmium selenide nanocrystals.

A simple treatment method using formic acid has been found to increase the fluorescence quantum yield of ultrasmall white light-emitting CdSe nanocrystals from 8% to 45%. Brighter white-light emission occurs with other carboxylic acids as well, and the magnitude of the quantum yield enhancement is shown to be dependent on the alkyl chain length. Additionally, the nanocrystal luminescence remains enhanced relative to the untreated nanocrystals over several days. This brightened emission opens the possibility for even further quantum yield improvement and potential for use of these white-light n…

White shiny structures: dermoscopic features revealed under polarized light.

BACKGROUND: White shiny structures, including white shiny lines, white shiny areas and rosettes, are features only observed under polarized dermoscopy (PD). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of the varied morphologies of white shiny structures in melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), actinic keratosis (AK) and lichen planus-like keratosis (LPLK). METHODS: Retrospective study using dermoscopic images of biopsy-proven melanoma, BCC, SCC, AK and LPLK. RESULTS: A total of 538 lesions were assessed under PD. One or more types of white shiny structures were obse…

Anaerobic function of CNS white matter declines with age.

The mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is generally believed to be completely dependent on the presence of oxygen (O(2)) to maintain energy levels necessary for excitability. However, previous studies on CNS white matter (WM) have shown that a large subset of CNS-myelinated axons of mice aged 4 to 6 weeks remains excitable in the absence of O(2). We investigated whether this surprising WM tolerance to anoxia varied with age. Acutely isolated mouse optic nerve (MON), a purely myelinated WM tract, was studied electrophysiologically. Excitability in the MONs from 1-month-, 4-month-, and 8-mon…

White cells count in smokers affected by rheumatic diseases.

Evidence shows that tobacco smoking interacts with development of rheumatic diseases. Increase in white cells count (leukocytosis) is frequently present, and in smokers, it is considered a biomarker of cardiovascular risk. Aim of the study is to evaluate this biomarker in smokers with rheumatic diagnosis. We carried out an observational study on 115 rheumatic outpatients (26 men and 89 women) divided into two groups according to their smoking habit: one composed of 56 smokers, the other of 59 not smokers. Diagnosis and common routinary clinical parameters were collected. In the total sample, s…

Factors involved in inflammation-induced developmental white matter damage.

Developmental white matter damage is a brain pathology associated with several long-term neurological disorders. An inflammatory insult has been suggested as the major instigating event. This study investigated the relative influence of inflammation, blood-brain barrier permeability and glial ontogeny in white matter damage. Systemic inflammation was induced in Monodelphis domestica (opossum) by serial intraperitoneal injections of lipopolysaccharide at different stages of brain development. Volume of white matter was estimated for the external capsule. Blood-brain barrier permeability was ass…

Black-White differences in hysterectomy prevalence: the CARDIA study.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the cross-sectional association between race and hysterectomy prevalence in a population-based cohort of US women and investigated participant characteristics associated with racial differences. METHODS: The cohort consisted of 1863 Black and White women in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study from 2000 to 2002 (years 15 and 16 after baseline). We used logistic regression to examine unadjusted and multivariable adjusted odds ratios. RESULTS: Black women demonstrated greater odds of hysterectomy compared with White women (odds ratio [OR]…

Inflammation and white matter damage in vascular cognitive impairment.

Vascular cognitive impairment is a term used to describe a heterogeneous group of diseases, including large vessel disease with strategic single and multiple strokes and small vessel disease with progressive damage to the deep white matter. Identification of patients with the progressive form of vascular cognitive impairment, referred to by some investigators as Binswanger disease, is important for treatment trials. Pathologically, Binswanger disease is associated with small vessel disease, extensive regions of demyelination, inflammatory cells around damaged blood vessels, and lacunar infarct…

Inferior frontal white matter volume and suicidality in schizophrenia.

The neurobiology of suicidality in schizophrenia is largely unknown. We therefore assessed gray and white matter volumes associated with past suicidality and current self-aggression in schizophrenia. Fifty-five outpatients with schizophrenia (n=55) and healthy controls (n=55), matched for age, gender and handedness, were recruited. Ten patients had a life-time history of one or more suicide attempts. Current self-aggression was assessed using the Modified Overt Aggression Scale. High resolution structural magnetic resonance images were analyzed by voxel-based morphometry. We found significantl…

Phacoemulsification in total white cataract with Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Cataract surgery with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (S-J) is associated with a high incidence of complications and can worsen the primary disease. We report a case of phacoemulsification of a total, white cataract barely visible through the vascularized, keratinized cornea in the only seeing eye of a patient with S-J syndrome. We describe the intra-operative difficulties encountered during phacoemulsification and the surgical tools and techniques employed to overcome the surgical difficulties. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient regained useful, navigational vision.

White matter NMDA receptors: an unexpected new therapeutic target?

Axons, their ensheathing myelin and supporting glia that make up the white matter in the mammalian brain and spinal cord are fundamentally important for the normal operation of the central nervous system. Prevalent human disorders such as stroke, vascular dementia, multiple sclerosis, brain and spinal cord trauma, HIV-associated dementia, periventricular leukomalacia of premature infants, and seemingly traditional 'gray matter disorders' such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, exhibit white matter pathology that contributes to morbidity and mortality. N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) recepto…

Preexisting posterior capsule defect progressing to white mature cataract.

We present two children discovered to have a total cataract in one eye with a posterior subcapsular cataract in the other eye. Sequential photography documented rapid progression of the posterior subcapsular cataract to a preexisting posterior capsule defect and subsequently to a white, mature cataract. We propose that early intervention be considered in cases with any posterior subcapsular changes (no matter how subtle) and history of total cataract in the fellow eye, especially in any situation where loss of follow-up is likely to occur. In the event surgery is not advised, parents should be…

Surviving anoxia: a tale of two white matter tracts.

Successful axon function is vital to the overall performance of the central nervous system (CNS). White matter (WM) axons are dependent on constant supply of oxygen and glucose to transmit signals with high fidelity. The optic nerve is a pure WM tract composed of completely myelinated axons while corpus callosum (CC) slices contain both gray and WM portions of the brain with a mixture of myelinated and unmyelinated axons. Axon function in both WM tracts is resistant to anoxia with a subset of axons able to survive exclusively on energy generated by glycolysis. In mouse optic nerves (MONs), rem…
