This study investigated whether visual attention affects the reliability (i.e., repeatability) of transiently evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) magnitudes or of medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) estimates. TEOAEs were measured during three visual attentional conditions: control (subject were seated with eyes closed); passive (subjects looked at a pattern of squares on a computer screen); and active (subjects silently counted an occasionally inverted pattern). To estimate reliability, the whole recording session was repeated the next day. The results showed that visual attention does not sig

Processing auditory sequences involves multiple brain networks and is crucial to complex perception associated with music appreciation and speech comprehension. We used time-resolved cortical imaging in a pitch change detection task to detail the underlying nature of human brain network activity, at the rapid time scales of neurophysiology. In response to tone sequence presentation to the participants, we observed slow inter-regional signaling at the pace of tone presentations (2-4 Hz) that was directed from auditory cortex toward both inferior frontal and motor cortices. Symmetrically, motor

Tinnitus is a highly prevalent, largely untreatable auditory disorder, characterized by the perception of phantom sound often in the form of incessant ringing or hissing. Despite longstanding research with animal models, its underlying pathophysiological causes remain poorly understood. Given recent data characterizing tinnitus as a disorder with a strong neurocognitive component, progress in the field might be hastened by testing a wider spectrum of animal models, including nonhuman primates, and by developing alternative measurement techniques of tinnitus, especially in animals. The installation of marine renewable energy devices (MREDs, wind turbines and converters of wave, tidal and ocean thermal energy) has increased quickly in the last decade. There is a lack of knowledge concerning the effects of MREDs on benthic invertebrates that live in contact with the seabed. The European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fisheries. A project to build an offshore wind farm in the French bay of Saint-Brieuc, near the English Channel, raised concern ab

Background. The auditory steady state response (ASSR) is generated in bilateral auditory cortex and is the most used electroencephalographic (EEG) or magnetoencephalographic measure of gamma band abnormalities in schizophrenia. While the finding of reduced 40-Hz ASSR power and phase consistency in schizophrenia have been replicated many times, the 40-Hz ASSR phase locking angle (PLA), which assesses oscillation latency or phase delay, has rarely been examined. Furthermore, whether 40-Hz ASSR phase delay in schizophrenia is lateralized or common to left and right auditory cortical generators is

According to the sensory-neural Temporal Sampling theory of developmental dyslexia, neural sampling of auditory information at slow rates (<10 Hz, related to speech rhythm) is atypical in dyslexic individuals, particularly in the delta band (0.5-4 Hz). Here we examine the underlying neural mechanisms related to atypical sampling using a simple repetitive speech paradigm. Fifty-one children (21 control children [15M, 6F] and 30 children with dyslexia [16M, 14F]) aged 9 years with or without developmental dyslexia watched and listened as a 'talking head' repeated the syllable "ba" every 500 ms,

Technologies, such as mobile devices or sets of connected sensors, provide new and engaging opportunities to devise music-based interventions. Among the different technological options, serious games offer a valuable alternative. Serious games can engage multisensory processes, creating a rich, rewarding, and motivating rehabilitation setting. Moreover, they can be targeted to specific musical features, such as pitch production or synchronization to a beat. Because serious games are typically low cost and enjoy wide access, they are inclusive tools perfectly suited for remote at-home intervent

Visual-auditory sensory substitution has demonstrated great potential to help visually impaired and blind groups to recognize objects and to perform basic navigational tasks. However, the high latency between visual information acquisition and auditory transduction may contribute to the lack of the successful adoption of such aid technologies in the blind community; thus far, substitution methods have remained only laboratory-scale research or pilot demonstrations. This high latency for data conversion leads to challenges in perceiving fast-moving objects or rapid environmental changes. To red

Interaural place-of-stimulation mismatch for bilateral cochlear-implant (BI-CI) listeners is often evaluated using pitch-comparison tasks that can be susceptible to procedural biases. Bias effects were compared for three sequential interaural pitch-comparison tasks in six BI-CI listeners using single-electrode direct stimulation. The reference (right ear) was a single basal, middle, or apical electrode. The comparison electrode (left ear) was chosen from one of three ranges: basal half, full array, or apical half. In Experiment 1 (discrimination), interaural pairs were chosen randomly (method

OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of an external physical sound source, for some people it can severely reduce the quality of life. Acoustic residual inhibition (ARI) is a suppression of tinnitus following the cessation of a sound. The present study investigated the effect of ARI on brain activity measured using EEG.
DESIGN: Thirty adult participants (mean age of 58 years) experiencing chronic tinnitus (minimum 2 years) participated. Participants were presented broad band noise at 10 dB above minimum masking level (1 min followed by 4 min of silence, 4 times) coun

OBJECTIVE: This study uses the multi-feature paradigm to compare the MMN responses of individuals with normal hearing thresholds, including the high frequencies with and without tinnitus.
METHODS: Sixteen subjects with chronic subjective idiopathic tinnitus and twenty matched healthy controls were included in the study. Participants with hearing thresholds (0.125-16 kHz) less than 20 dB HL and MoCA test scores above 21 were included in the study. MMN responses and topographical maps of the responses resulting from the multi-feature MMN paradigm were recorded from 22 surface scalp electrodes.

Different studies have suggested that language and developmental disorders such as dyslexia are associated with a disturbance of auditory entrainment and of the functional hemispheric asymmetries during speech processing. These disorders typically result from an issue in the phonological component of language that causes problems to represent and manipulate the phonological structure of words at the syllable and/or phoneme level. We used Auditory Steady-State Responses (ASSRs) in EEG recordings to investigate the brain activation and hemisphere asymmetry of theta, alpha, beta and low-gamma ran

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), also known as presbycusis, is a widespread and debilitating condition impacting many older adults. Conventionally, researchers utilize mammalian model systems or human cadaveric tissue to study ARHL pathology. Recently, the zebrafish has become an effective and tractable model system for a wide variety of genetic and environmental auditory insults, but little is known about the incidence or extent of ARHL in zebrafish and other non-mammalian models. Here, we evaluated whether zebrafish exhibit age-related loss in auditory sensitivity. The auditory sensitivity o

OBJECTIVES: Experimental investigation of the contribution of the middle ear to bone conduction (BC) hearing sensation.
METHODS: Experiments were conducted on 6 fresh cadaver whole head specimens. The electromagnetic actuators from a commercial bone conduction hearing aid (BCHA), Baha® 5 SuperPower and BoneBridge (BB), were used to provide stepped sine stimulus in the range of 0.1-10 kHz. The middle ear transfer function (METF) of each cadaver head was checked against the ASTM F2504-05 standard. In a first step, the stapes stimulus into the cochlea, under BC, was estimated based on the differ

Sounds we hear in our daily life contain changes in the acoustic features (e.g., frequency, intensity, and duration or "what" information) and/or changes in location ("where" information). The purpose of this study was to examine the cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) to the change within a stimulus, the acoustic change complex (ACC), in frequency (F) and location (L) of the sound in normal hearing listeners. Fifteen right-handed young normal hearing listeners participated in the electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. The acoustic stimuli were pure tones (base frequency at 250 Hz)

BACKGROUND: Mismatch negativity (MMN) or its magnetic counterpart (MMNm) is a neurophysiological signal to reflect the automatic change-detection ability. However, MMN studies in patients with panic disorder (PD) showed contrasting results using electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. The present study attempted to overcome the limitations of EEG methodology by means of a whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) combined with the depth-weighted minimum norm estimate method to conduct an in-depth investigation on the MMNm at the cortical level in patients with PD.
METHODS: We recruited 22 hea

The signal processing used to increase intelligibility within the hearing-impaired listener introduces distortions in the modulation patterns of a signal. Trade-offs have to be made between improved audibility and the loss of fidelity. Acoustic hearing impairment can cause reduced access to temporal fine structure (TFS), while cochlear implant processing, used to treat profound hearing impairment, has reduced ability to convey TFS, hence forcing greater reliance on modulation cues. Target speech mixed with a competing talker was split into 8-22 frequency channels. From each channel, separate l

It is established that individuals with dyslexia are less consistent at auditory phoneme categorization than typical readers. One hypothesis attributes these differences in phoneme labeling to differences in auditory cue integration over time, suggesting that the performance of individuals with dyslexia would improve with longer exposure to informative phonetic cues. Here, the relationship between phoneme labeling and reading ability was investigated while manipulating the duration of steady-state auditory information available in a consonant-vowel syllable. Children with dyslexia obtained no
