Response to measles, mumps, and rubella revaccination among HIV-positive and HIV-negative children and adolescents with hemophilia. Hemophilia Growth and Development Study.

The effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on response to measles, mumps, and rubella revaccination in children and adolescents with hemophilia was evaluated. Antibody levels of measles, mumps, and rubella were assayed at baseline and two annual examinations in 207 HIV-positive and 126 HIV-negative hemophiliacs participating in the Hemophilia Growth and Development Study (HGDS). Response to revaccination was analyzed for participants whose antibody levels were below the cut-off at the start of a year-long observation period. Among HIV-positive participants, antibody levels were

Community-engaged development and testing of virtual peer groups to increase technology use among Latinx adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers.

Latinx adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have lower diabetes technology use and less optimal health outcomes compared to non-marginalized populations. In keeping with the tenants of social cognitive theory, adolescents with T1D who participate in virtual peer groups (VPGs) experience improved outcomes and technology use, but VPGs have not been developed or tested specifically in a Latinx cohort. Our previous focus groups with Latinx adolescents and caregivers revealed an urgent need for community-building, support, and culturally relevant information on multiple T1D topics, including diab

Integration of Preclinical and Clinical Vaccine Safety and Immunogenicity Testing for Development of a Pediatric HIV Vaccine to Achieve Protective HIV Immunity Prior to Adolescence.

An optimal HIV vaccine should provide protective immunity before sexual debut to prevent infection in adolescents and young adults, including acute infections in women of childbearing age. Such a vaccine will likely require multiple sequential immunization doses and would therefore be ideally initiated in childhood. Many of the world's most successful vaccines are initiated in childhood for the induction of lifelong immunity and/or immunity that can be boosted later in life as part of the WHO Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). Thus, the EPI vaccine framework provides an infrastructure tha

The African youth in mind (Y-MIND) brief psychological intervention for depression among school-going adolescents in Ghana: a development case series.

BACKGROUND: Depression is common among adolescents, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, such as Ghana. Yet, access to mental health care in these settings remains limited. There is a need for research to focus on innovative strategies to improve access to care. The African Youth in Mind consortium, together with a group of young people with depression and relevant stakeholders have developed a novel six-session lay professional intervention (Y-MIND) to treat depression. METHOD: As part of the early phase of intervention development, we conducted a case series aimed at testing th

Impact of the Empower-DSD training program on the health-related quality of life in children, adolescents and young adults with differences of sex development and their parents.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of individuals with a difference of sex development (DSD) must respect ethical principles, human rights, and national laws. Informed consent is central and should be supported by age-appropriate information from early on. In Germany, genital surgery in DSD is prohibited until autonomous consent is possible, requiring sufficient maturity and proper information. DSD may negatively affect individuals and their families' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and may be associated with stigmatization, inadequate information and lack of peer counseling. We examined if HRQoL of

Internet Use Scale for Emotional Distress Avoidance in Adolescents (IU-EDA): Development, Psychometric Validation, and Predictive Validity of Problematic Internet Use.

This study introduces and validates the Internet Use Scale for Emotional Distress Avoidance in Adolescents (IU-EDA), designed to assess the tendency to use the Internet as a coping strategy for negative emotional states. A total of 764 adolescents (51.8% boys; aged 11-17, mean age: 13.32 years) from ten Spanish municipalities participated across two samples. The IU-EDA was developed following theoretical models of Problematic Internet Use (PIU) and use to avoid emotional distress in adolescents. Items were developed from literature and validated via the Delphi technique. Analyses included desc

Association of 24-Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure During Pregnancy in Adolescents and Young Adults With Measures of Fetal Autonomic Nervous System Development.

The autonomic nervous system regulates physiological processes, including cardiovascular functions. Changes in maternal systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP; DBP), as well as fetal heart rate and heart rate variability, can serve as indicators of possible risk for adverse perinatal and developmental outcomes. This study examined the association between maternal blood pressure during pregnancy and fetal autonomic nervous system heart rate indices. This was a secondary analysis of a pregnant adolescent and young adult cohort with data collected between 2009 and 2012. Ambulatory SBP and DBP

Decision-making experiences in gonadectomy and gonadal tissue cryopreservation for adolescents/young adults and parents of individuals with differences of sex development: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Our institution offers experimental gonadal tissue cryopreservation (GTC) at the time of prophylactic gonadectomy for malignancy risk for individuals with differences of sex development (DSD). Decisions about GTC are challenging for numerous reasons: the experimental nature of the procedure and uncertainty of future reproductive success, costs, possibility of heritability of the condition, and possible discordance between gender identity and germ cells. OBJECTIVE: In this qualitative study, we sought to examine gonadectomy and GTC decision-making experiences of parents and patient

Development of a pharmacodynamic biomarker of opioid antagonism in adolescents with eating disorders: Study protocol for the naltrexone neuroimaging randomized controlled trial (NN-RCT).

Eating disorders (ED) affect 5 % of youth, are associated with reward system alterations, and lead to substantial morbidity. Naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, is used to treat ED behaviors such as binge eating and purging. However, not all patients respond, and the optimal dose is unknown. Neuroimaging may serve as a tool to detect drug response in the brain, acting as a pharmacodynamic biomarker to support therapeutic optimization. Currently, no pharmacodynamic biomarkers for psychopharmacology exist. Building on pilot work, we present the protocol for a randomized controlled trial to validat

Development and evaluation of a new semi-quantitative and morphometric scoring system for magnetic resonance imaging in adolescents with Osgood Schlatter Disease (The OSIS Score).

BACKGROUND: Osgood Schlatter Disease (OSD) is a common injury in adolescents. A recent systematic review identified multiple tissue characteristics evaluated in imaging studies, but the studies used different imaging modalities, used varying MRI protocols and were of poor study quality, which led to conflicting findings and hamper the clinical utility of MRI scans. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the reliability of a semi-quantitative MRI scoring system for use in adolescents with OSD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on a systematic review, we used an expert-led process to develop a sco

A Bayesian incorporated linear non-Gaussian acyclic model for multiple directed graph estimation to study brain emotion circuit development in adolescence.

Emotion perception is essential to affective and cognitive development which involves distributed brain circuits. Emotion identification skills emerge in infancy and continue to develop throughout childhood and adolescence. Understanding the development of the brain's emotion circuitry may help us explain the emotional changes during adolescence. In this work, we aim to deepen our understanding of emotion-related functional connectivity (FC) from association to causation. We proposed a Bayesian incorporated linear non-Gaussian acyclic model (BiLiNGAM), which incorporated association model into

Evaluating the sensitivity to threat and affiliative reward (STAR) model in relation to the development of conduct problems and callous-unemotional traits across early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: The Sensitivity to Threat and Affiliative Reward (STAR) model proposes low threat sensitivity and low affiliation as risk factors for callous-unemotional (CU) traits. Preliminary evidence for the STAR model comes from work in early childhood. However, studies are needed that explore the STAR dimensions in late childhood and adolescence when severe conduct problems (CP) emerge. Moreover, it is unclear how variability across the full spectrum of threat sensitivity and affiliation gives rise to different forms of psychopathology beyond CU traits. METHODS: The current study addressed

Evaluation of the safety profile of the quadrivalent vaccine against human papillomavirus in the risk of developing autoimmune, neurological, and hematological diseases in adolescent women in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer eradication is one of the main goals for 2030 by the World Health Organization, which can only be achieved with high vaccination rates against Human Papilloma Virus. In Colombia, more and better scientific evidence is required to increase confidence in vaccination. The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety profile of the quadrivalent vaccine against HPV in the risk of developing autoimmune, neurological, and hematological diseases in adolescent women in Colombia. METHODS: We designed a cohort study based on national HPV vaccination records and incident

Case report: Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor of the lateral ventricle in a male adolescent (case-based review and diagnostic challenges in developing countries).

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) is a rare and highly malignant central nervous system (CNS) embryonal neoplasm: it accounts for <2% of all pediatric CNS tumors and occurs mainly in infants and young children. The primary site of this tumor is usually the posterior cranial fossa. Supratentorial and, in detail, latero-ventricular location is extremely uncommon, especially in adolescents. This tumor is characterized by rapid growth and spread in cerebrospinal fluid and, therefore, it is characterized by a poor prognosis. Neurological signs and symptoms are related the location of the tum
