Plasma ouabain-like immunoreactivity, which has been supposed to be associated with hypertension, was significantly higher in five patients with primary aldosteronism than in age-matched normotensive subjects. High plasma levels of ouabain-like immunoreactivity decreased to normal after removal of adenoma. Extracts of adenoma tissue did not contain any apparent ouabain-like immunoreactivity. Hypercalcemia and hypercalcemic crisis are common and often life threatening complications of neoplastic disease. Even moderately increased mobilization of skeletal calcium can result in significant osteoporosis. This in turn can give rise to pathologic fractures, often followed by pulmonary fat embolism and death. Bone pain is at times the first sign of neoplastic disease and the reason for seeking medical help.

Information about epidemiology, natural history and prognostic factors of adrenocortical carcinoma in Italy is extremely scarce. We report here 35 patients of adult age who were referred to our institution in the last two decades. Nine patients had non functioning, and 26 had functioning tumors. In non-functional tumors initial symptoms were abdominal pain in 90% of cases, fever, weakness, malaise, weight loss in 30%. Only one patient was asymptomatic. A 60-year-old man visited our clinic with the complaint of a tumor of the tongue base. Clinical and histological examination revealed that the tumor was metastasis from left adrenal carcinoma. Metastatic lesions were present in the tongue base, cervical lymph node and lung. There were no endocrinological abnormalities in the laboratory examination. The patient died about three months after admission. The autopsy disclosed nonfunctioning carcinoma of the adrenal cortex. Ninety-two cases of nonfunctioning adrenocortical carcinoma in Japan including the present patient are briefly reviewed.

Adrenal cysts are rare clinical and pathologic entities. The vast majority are minute in size, unilateral, and found in females at autopsy. They come to the physician's attention when they produce symptoms or are identified on x-ray studies. A 15-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with gastrointestinal signs, polyuria, polydipsia, and weakness. Abdominal bruit ("whooshing" sound from turbulent blood flow) and hypertension (systolic blood pressure: 200 mmHg) were present. A left adrenal gland mass was detected with abdominal ultrasonography; a subsequent CT examination identified a mass and a thrombus in the ipsilateral renal vein.
