Peripheral configuration and central projections of the lateral line system in Astronotus ocellatus (Cichlidae): a nonelectroreceptive teleost.

The lateral line system of Astronotus ocellatus comprises one trunk canal, one tail canal, and three head canals. The sensory receptors on the head are innervated by rami of the dorsal anterior, ventral anterior, and posterior lateral line nerves, and those along the trunk and tail by rami of the posterior lateral line nerve. The peripheral configuration of lateral line canals and nerves was examined in whole mount preparations, the central connections of restricted groups of endorgans studied using HRP and degeneration methods, and the neuronal morphology and cytoarchitecture of the lateralis

Cortical and thalamic afferent connections of the insular and adjacent cortex of the cat.

The thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical afferents of the cat's insular cortex were investigated with the retrograde horseradish peroxidase technique. The most prominent loci of thalamic labeling were the suprageniculate nucleus and parts of the posterolateral nucleus. Injections into the anterior part of the insular cortex also resulted in labeled cells in the ventromedial posterior nucleus and in the intralaminar nuclei, while injections into posterior parts revealed projections from the medial and dorsal parts of the medial geniculate nucleus. Only the anterior and most ventral parts of th

Dynamic properties of vestibular reflexes in the decerebrate cat.

Vestibulocollic (VCR) and vestibulo-ocular (VOR) reflexes were studied during angular rotation in the horizontal plane in precollicular decerebrate cats. Angular position was modulated by sinusoids or sums of sinusoids with frequencies ranging from 0.05 to 5 Hz. Reflex motor output was measured by recording electromyographic (EMG) activity of the lateral rectus and dorsal neck muscles and discharge of abducens motoneurons. Measured with respect to input angular acceleration VCR motor output displayed a second order lag at low frequencies, bringing mean EMG phase (-136 degrees) and gain slope (

Widespread cortical projections of the ventral tegmental area and of other brain stem structures in the cat.

Thirty-three cat brains with injections of horseradish peroxidase in various regions of the cerebral cortex were screened for afferent projections from the ventral tegmental area, the locus ceruleus, and the parabrachial nuclei. All three structures were found to project to rather divergent parts of the cortex, including regions in the posterior half of the hemisphere. These results, especially for the ventral tegmental area and, to a lesser degree, for the parabrachial neurons, disagree with most of the target loci of established cortical afferents in the rat. Though our results might be attr

Relative latency of responses of chemoreceptor afferents from aortic and carotid bodies.

Discharges from aortic and carotid body chemoreceptor afferents were simultaneously recorded in 18 anesthetized cats to test the hypothesis that aortic chemoreceptors, because of their proximity to the heart, respond to changes in arterial blood gases before carotid chemoreceptors. We found that carotid chemoreceptor responses to the onset of hypoxia and hypercapnia, and to the intravenously administered excitatory drugs (cyanide, nicotine, and doxapram), preceded those of aortic chemoreceptors. Postulating that this unexpected result was due to differences in microcirculation and mass transpo

Dopamine depolarisation of mammalian primary afferent neurones.

Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in the mammalian nervous system. As such, it is implicated in the aetiology and therapy of various disease conditions--for example, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, Huntington's disease and tardive dyskinesia. However, only limited electrophysiological information is presently available concerning dopamine receptors in the mammalian nervous system, and there are only three reports in which intracellular techniques have successfully recorded the action of DA on individual central neurones. In all cases, DA depolarised the respe

Quantitative electron-microscopy analysis of cranial nerves III, IV, and VI and of the extrinsic eye muscles in fog.

A comparative study of the quantitative data of the frog extraocular muscles and the cranial nerves that innervate them was performed. Oculorotatory muscles contain muscle fibres of at least 4 types which are arranged in heterogeneous layers. The zonal arrangement of the muscles does not occur on the cross-sections in the vicinity of muscle insertions. In these regions only two muscle fibre types are present and the total number of fibres is smaller by 70% than in the central region of the muscle. Most numerous are muscle fibres in the rectus inferior muscle, while the smallest number of fibre

Role of vagal afferents in vasodepressor effects of PGE2 in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

In anesthetized, spontaneously hypertensive rats (Okamoto-Aoki), injections of 0.75, 1.5, and 3.0 microgram/kg PGE2 into the jugular vein caused transient decreases (mean +/- SE) in arterial pressure of 21 +/- 2, 37 +/- 3, and 78 +/- 6 mmHg, respectively, before cervical vagotomy and of 1 +/- 1, 15 +/- 4, and 15 +/- 6 mmHg after cervical vagotomy. The vasodepressor effect of jugular vein injections of 3.0 microgram/kg PGE2, but not of lower doses, was depressed by vagotomy in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto and Sprague-Dawley rats. Vagotomy did not reduce the hypotensive response to intra-aortic inj

Reflex pathways in the abdominal prevertebral ganglia: evidence for a colo-colonic inhibitory reflex.

1. In vitro experiments were performed on preparations consisting of prevertebral ganglia attached to the entire colon of guinea-pigs. The colon was divided into an orad and a caudad segment and intraluminal pressure was recorded from the terminal end of each segment. Intracellular recordings were simultaneously obtained from neurones in the coeliac plexus. 2. The source of mechanosensory input from the colon paralleled the responses to mesenteric nerve stimulation. That is, section of the mesenteric nerve that contributed the strongest synaptic input to a neurone eliminated most of the mechan

Correlation of changes in the GABA-ergic system with the development of spasticity in paraplegic cats.

Following spinal cord transection there occurred decreases in Km and Vmax of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) both above and below the lesion, and an initial decrease in the concentration of GABA. Concomitantly, there was a gradual decrease in presynaptic inhibition. Eight to 12 weeks after spinal cord transection, Km and Vmax for GAD returned to control values, but the GABA content of the spinal cord below the lesion increased significantly and presynaptic inhibition became maximally depressed. These results suggested that during the chronic phase of spinal cord injury there is a decrease in rel

Vagal neurocircuitry and its influence on gastric motility.

A large body of research has been dedicated to the effects of gastrointestinal peptides on vagal afferent fibres, yet multiple lines of evidence indicate that gastrointestinal peptides also modulate brainstem vagal neurocircuitry, and that this modulation has a fundamental role in the physiology and pathophysiology of the upper gastrointestinal tract. In fact, brainstem vagovagal neurocircuits comprise highly plastic neurons and synapses connecting afferent vagal fibres, second order neurons of the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), and efferent fibres originating in the dorsal motor nucleus of

Towards a primate model of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: anatomo-behavioural correlation of disorders induced by striatal dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterized by abnormal movements (tics) often associated with behavioural disorders. Neuropathological data from GTS patients have suggested that aberrant activation of distinct striatal functional territories could produce a large spectrum of GTS symptoms. In a monkey model, injections of GABA-antagonist into the striatum enabled us to produce tic-like movements, hyperactivity and stereotyped behaviours. These effects had similarities with simple motor tics, hyperactivity and compulsive behaviours observed in GTS patients. In this study

Afferentation of the lateral nidopallium: A tracing study of a brain area involved in sexual imprinting in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

The lateral forebrain of zebra finches that comprises parts of the lateral nidopallium and parts of the lateral mesopallium is supposed to be involved in the storage and processing of visual information acquired by an early learning process called sexual imprinting. This information is later used to select an appropriate sexual partner for courtship behavior. Being involved in such a complicated behavioral task, the lateral nidopallium should be an integrative area receiving input from many other regions of the brain. Our experiments indeed show that the lateral nidopallium receives input from

Peripheral olfactory deafferentation of the primary olfactory system in rats using ZnSO4 nasal spray with special reference to maternal behavior.

A modified method of applying ZnSO4 to the olfactory mucosa is described. Treated rats experienced severe nasal congestion that cleared within 24 h; more persistent morbidity did not occur. Nonpregnant females observed with male intruders 24 h following ZnSO4 showed no alterations in behavior other than a reduction in anogenital sniffing, indicating that they were not hypoactive or irritable. In other experiments, lactating females were observed in a hole-board apparatus; 2 days posttreatment anosmia was confirmed in 80% of bilaterally ZnSO4-treated females by the absence of preference for pup

Spontaneous activity in afferent and efferent fibers after chronic axotomy: response to potassium channel blockade.

Distally propagating spontaneous impulses in acutely and chronically cut rat saphenous nerve were examined to determine (1) the origin(s) of the activity, (2) the fiber types involved, and (3) whether the activity was affected by potassium channel blockade. Under deep pentobarbital anesthesia, six male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent L3 cauda equina section, then unilateral saphenous axotomy. The nerve was then dissected into 30-50 microfilaments and surveyed for spontaneous activity using a modification of the microfilament recording method. Afterward, the nerve was cut back, and a potassium ch

Norepinephrine reduces ω-conotoxin-sensitive Ca2+ currents in renal afferent neurons in rats.

Sympathetic efferent and peptidergic afferent renal nerves likely influence hypertensive and inflammatory kidney disease. Our recent investigation with confocal microscopy revealed that in the kidney sympathetic nerve endings are colocalized with afferent nerve fibers (Ditting T, Tiegs G, Rodionova K, Reeh PW, Neuhuber W, Freisinger W, Veelken R. Gastrointestinal sensory abnormalities in functional dyspepsia.

Symptoms of functional dyspepsia, such as epigastric pain, bloating or early satiety and nausea, are non-specific and are likely to arise from different mechanisms. Current evidence suggests the presence of at least two subgroups: patients who respond to a prolonged course of acid suppression and patients who show a significant overlap of symptoms with other functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. An enhanced sensitivity of visceral afferent pathways with or without associated autonomic dysregulation appears to play an important role in the aetiology of symptoms…

The cerebellum in dystonia: key player or background support?

Since the 1960s, the pathophysiology of dystonia has been primarily attributed to dysfunction of the basal ganglia and their associated pathways. However, growing evidence from both basic and clinical research has highlighted the additional importance of the cerebellum, suggesting that dystonia arises from a motor-network dysfunction involving not only the basal ganglia, but also the cerebellum. Neuroimaging studies reinforce this concept, revealing structural and functional abnormalities in the cerebellum and its afferent pathways in patients with dystonia. Moreover, the dual involvement of t…
