Comparison of the microagglutination test with bactericidal response to Legionella pneumophila (Legionnaires disease bacterium).

This investigation found that individuals with microagglutination antibody titers of 1:32 or greater to Legionella pneumophila produced bactericidal activity against the bacterium. Those individuals with microagglutination antibody titers of 1:16 or less demonstrated no bactericidal activity.

Occurrence of serological reactions for Leptospira spp. in donkeys and mules from Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Research concerning leptospirosis in donkeys and mules has been neglected around the world. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological situation of the prevalence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in donkeys and mules from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Blood serum samples were collected from 180 animals (109 donkeys and 71 mules) in two rural properties from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and then submitted to a microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Urea and creatinine values were also quantified. Epidemiological variables such as age, breeding system, co

A multipronged approach for the detection of leptospirosis in captive sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) in Agra and Bannerghatta sloth bear rescue centers in India.

Leptospirosis is an exacerbating factor responsible for the drastic decline of sloth bear population in India. In this study, a multipronged approach based on antigen detection using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) employing G1/G2 and LigBF/LigBR primers, antibody detection using Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and recombinant LigBCon1-5 antigen based Latex Agglutination Test (rLigBCon1-5 LAT), serum biochemistry using hepatic (serum glutamate oxalo acetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamate pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and renal biomarkers (blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine) an

Negative serosurvey of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in Golden-headed Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) from Niterói/RJ, Brazil.

New World Nonhuman Primates are highly susceptible to clinical toxoplasmosis. Serum samples from 126 recently captured Leontopithecus chrysomelas, from an exotic and invasive population, were tested for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies by the modified agglutination test (MAT, cut-off 1:25); all were seronegative. The MAT is highly specific and is not species-specific. This is the first report of T. gondii survey in this tamarin in the wild. This result is consistent with prior reports that showed the high susceptibility of the species to infection by T. gondii usually with high mortality rates.

[Investigation of Brucella canis Seroprevalence in Brucellosis Suspected Cases].

Brucella canis which is the main etiologic agent of brucellosis in dogs, can be transmitted to man. It causes mild or asymptomatic infection in human compared with other Brucella species. B.canis can be transmitted to man either by laboratory accidents or contact with infected dogs. Since B.canis infections in humans are not routinely investigated in hospitals in Turkey, the data are limited to reveal the current status of B.canis infections in people in our country. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of B.canis infection in brucellosis-suspected cases. The study was

An evaluation of the SAT in the diagnosis of typhoid.

Salmonella typhi O and H antibody titres were determined by the Standard Agglutination Test (SAT) in 85 patients with bacteriologically proven typhoid, 102 patients with non-typhoidal febrile illnesses (control group 1), and 170 healthy subjects (control group 2). An O antibody titre of 1/120 occurred in 93% of patients with typhoid fever (7% false negatives), and in 17% and 12% control groups 1 and 2 respectively. An H antibody titre of 1/120 was found only in 64% of patients with typhoid (false negatives in 36%). At titres other than 1/120, the proportion of false negatives or false positive

[Serotypes of Salmonella enterica in sewage effluent from Zaragoza. Comparison with clinical isolates. 1982-1989].

Between 1982 and 1989, 560 Salmonella enterica strains belonging to 63 serovars, were isolated from Zaragoza urban sewage. During the same period of time there were 45 different serovars isolated from faeces of patients from a hospital (in the same city). Only a reduced number of serovars comprised the majority of the human and environmental isolates. An approximately rectilinear relationship is shown between the isolated strains number and the number of different serovars, in non human Salmonella strains. In clinical isolates, we have not found this relation. We have compared the local result

Leishmania donovani donovani and Leishmania donovani chagasi as antigens in a direct agglutination assay for the diagnosis of kala-azar.

The need for a reliable method for the immunological diagnosis of kala-azar is imperative. Leishmania donovani donovani and L. donovani chagasi culture promastigotes were compared as antigens in a direct agglutination test (DAT) for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. Both antigens were successfully employed for the DAT, showing 100% sensitivity and greater than 98% specificity when used to test sera from Brazilian and African kala-azar, Chagas' disease, malaria, filaria and syphilis patients, and on sera from Brazilian controls. Cross-reactions were sometimes observed when cuta

Mixed agglutination with guinea pig tissue sediments for detection of heterophile antibodies.

Mixed agglutination (MA) test with sediments of guinea pig kidney (GPK) homogenates and indicator red blood cells of bovine (BRBC) or sheep (SRBC) origin was established for detection of human heterophile antibodies. By means of MA test with BRBC indicator cells, heterophile antibodies of Hanganutziu-Deicher (H-D) specificity were demonstrated in sera of patients with syphilis (20%), lepromatous leprosy (57%), infectious mononucleosis (45%), Chediak-Higashi syndrome (73%), Kawasaki disease (58%), multiple sclerosis (58%), and leukemias (13%), as well as in sera of subjects who received injecti

A rapid microagglutination test for the diagnosis of Legionella pneumophila (serogroup 1) infection.

A rapid microagglutination test has been developed which can be performed in 30 minutes. Ninety-seven percent of 96 patients diagnosed as having Legionella pneumophila (serogroup 1) infection by indirect immunofluorescence were also detected by the rapid microagglutination test.
