BACKGROUND: The Fear Questionnaire is an internationally popular measure in anxiety disorder research, but its validity with social phobia patients has not been clearly demonstrated.
METHOD: A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using the Fear Questionnaire responses of 122 social phobia patients.
RESULTS: The results indicated that the proposed three-factor model of the scale (agoraphobia, social phobia, and blood/injury dimensions) provided a good fit to the data.

Respiratory abnormalities have been proposed as a central feature of panic disorder, but the literature is not unanimous. Symptoms of anxiety were quantitatively recorded with the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A) in 72 psychiatric out-patients in two anxiety disorders clinics in Israel; 44 patients had panic disorder with or without agoraphobia and 28 patients had other anxiety disorders. Panic patients had more cardiovascular symptoms, but not more respiratory symptoms, than other patients. The relative importance of respiratory symptoms in panic disorder is not yet settled.

Sixty agoraphobics were treated by behavioural therapy (self-exposure in vivo) either with their partner involved in all aspects of treatment or without their partner. The two treatment formats were about equally effective. Clomipramine (25-150 mg/day) was given in a 2-month open clinical trial to patients with DSM-III defined panic disorder (N = 8) or agoraphobia with panic attacks (N = 12); 6 of these patients were found to have MVP. Substantial improvement was seen in all of the patients with MVP and 11 of 14 without MVP. Response was not affected by age, sex, or agoraphobic vs panic disorder diagnosis. Thus, clomipramine appears effective in the treatment of spontaneous panic attacks with or without mitral valve prolapse.
