P300 and alcohol consumption in normals and individuals at risk for alcoholism. A preliminary report.

Pairs of college student subjects (36 male, 36 female) were matched on age, sex, and personal drinking history. One pair member had a parent who met the DSM III criteria of alcoholism, while the other pair member had no close alcoholic relative. The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) was obtained from each subject with auditory stimuli in an "oddball" paradigm. Target stimuli occurred randomly on 20% of the trials in a frequency discrimination task, a relatively easy intensity discrimination task, and a more difficult intensity discrimination task. Subjects indicated when the target item

Blood alcohol concentration: a critical factor for producing fetal alcohol effects.

A dose of 6.6 g/kg of alcohol, delivered in 12 equally-spaced fractions each 24 hours via an artificial rearing procedure during postnatal days 4-10, produced mean blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) that were low (46.6 mg/dl), but stable with time. This relatively constant alcohol exposure did not limit brain growth in neonatal rats when measured on postnatal day 10. The same daily dose concentrated into 6 fractions over 12 hours (with 6 alcohol-free fractions the remaining 12 hours) resulted in cyclic BACs having high peaks (270.2 mg/dl). The cyclic regimen produced a significant reduction i

Serum alcohol levels, toxicology screens, and use of the breath alcohol analyzer.

The emergency physician sees a large number of patients with problems related to the ingestion of alcohol, drugs, and toxins, and must be prepared to deal with them in an efficient and cost-effective manner. This article discusses a rationale for ordering serum alcohol levels and toxicology screens, as well as use of the breath alcohol analyzer. A serum alcohol level should be reserved for patients in whom the alcohol level is necessary to confirm a diagnosis or to guide treatment. An alcohol level is indicated when alcohol use is combined with a significant alteration in mental status, multip

Alcoholic brain damage and neurological symptoms of alcohol withdrawal--manifestations of overhydration.

Central nervous system damage is a major complication of alcohol abuse. Vitamin deficiency, particularly thiamine deficiency, has a role in producing pathological and psychological changes of alcoholic brain damage, but it is likely that alcohol has a direct toxic effect on the brain. It is proposed that neuropathological abnormalities seen in alcoholics, and also neurological symptoms during alcohol withdrawal, may reflect cerebral edema caused by alcohol. The neurological symptoms of alcohol withdrawal show a similarity to those seen in hyponatremia or water intoxication. It is suggested tha…

Nutritional status of alcoholic patients: it's possible relationship to alcoholic liver damage.

This study was performed to look for a possible relationship between the nutritional status and the presence of liver damage in alcoholic patients. One hundred chronic alcoholics admitted for treatment to the Alcoholism Ward, without clinical signs of liver failure, were studied. In 84, anthropometric nutritional indexes, liver function tests, and a liver biopsy were performed; in 69 patients a dietary survey was obtained. A dietary imbalance was observed in the total group; 65% of ingested calories were derived from ethanol. The intake of proteins, vitamins, and minerals was below the RDA, NA…

Epilepsy and alcohol: the influence of social alcohol intake on seizures and treatment in epilepsy.

People suffering from epileptic seizures are often confronted with restrictions resulting from their attacks, such as exclusion from several professions and from some sports, not being allowed to drive a car, and prohibition of alcohol. Consultation of manuals to trace the literature studies on which this last prohibition was based was unsuccessful since there was no mention of the original research from which it appeared that alcohol was provocative of seizures. To be able to give a well-founded judgment on the influence of social alcohol intake on epilepsy, research was undertaken with epile

Stereospecificity and other properties of a novel secondary-alcohol-specific alcohol dehydrogenase.

Consequences of prenatal maternal alcohol exposure including the fetal alcohol syndrome.

1. Some recent findings on fetal alcohol effects are presented under the headings of introduction, classification--clinical signs and symptoms, epidemiology, etiology--possible pathogenesis, diagnosis, prognosis, management, discussion and conclusions. 2. The present level of knowledge suggests that the toxic effects of alcohol on the fetus may be a health hazard of significant proportion and that further clinical investigation and basic science research studies are indicated.

Alcohol dehydrogenase activities of wine yeasts in relation to higher alcohol formation.

Alcohol dehydrogenase activities were examined in cell-free extracts of 10 representative wine yeast strains having various productivities of higher alcohols (fusel oil). The amount of fusel alcohols (n-propanol, isobutanol, active pentanol, and isopentanol) produced by the different yeasts and the specific alcohol dehydrogenase activities with the corresponding alcohols as substrates were found to be significantly related. No such relationship was found for ethanol. The amounts of higher alcohols formed during vinification could be predicted from the specific activities of the alcohol dehydro

Is why we drink alcohol important when considering the potential public health benefit of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks? A cross-sectional study investigating associations between alcohol drinking motives and alcohol-free and low-alcohol drink consumption among adults in Great Britain.

INTRODUCTION: The UK has promoted increased availability of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks (no/lo, ≤1.2% alcohol by volume) as a public health strategy. To be effective, no/lo beverages must replace, and not supplement, standard alcoholic drinks. Emerging evidence suggests that the reasons people drink alcohol may be an important determinant of the potential public health impact of these drinks. This study aimed to determine whether alcohol drinking motives were associated with no/lo consumption after accounting for sociodemographic characteristics and alcohol consumption. METHODS: A cro

DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes and association with polymorphisms in the promoter region of the CYP2E1 gene in alcoholics from Central Brazil.

DNA damage caused by the accumulation of bio-products generated in the biotransformation of ethanol to acetaldehyde mediated by the CYP2E1 enzyme has been studied. To evaluate DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes and the possible association with polymorphisms in the promoter region of the CYP2E1 gene, we performed a case-control study including 75 alcoholics and 59 individuals who consume alcohol socially. Alcoholics were previously diagnosed by the Psychosocial Care Center - Alcohol and Drugs (CAPS A/D) in the city of Goiania, Goias state, Central Brazil. DNA damage was evaluated by co…

Associations between alcohol-related parenting factors and youth alcohol expectancies: considering the role of perceived friends' disapproval of alcohol use.

We investigated variations in associations of alcohol-related parenting factors with alcohol expectancies by perceived friends' disapproval of alcohol use in middle-school-aged youth (n = 7657). Perceived friend disapproval moderated the association of deciding on rules about drinking with positive expectancies. Parenting factors and friend disapproval were independently associated with negative expectancies.

Alcohol-induced extracellular ASC specks perpetuate liver inflammation and damage in alcohol-associated hepatitis even after alcohol cessation.

BACKGROUND AIMS: Prolonged systemic inflammation contributes to poor clinical outcomes in severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) even after the cessation of alcohol use. However, mechanisms leading to this persistent inflammation remain to be understood. APPROACH RESULTS: We show that while chronic alcohol induces nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family, pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation in the liver, alcohol binge results not only in NLRP3 inflammasome activation but also in increased circulating extracellular apoptosis-associated speck-like p
