Viscosity of subretinal fluid and its clinical correlations.

The viscosity of subretinal fluid is an important factor in transmitting force created by subretinal fluid motion to the retina. The variation of viscosity of subretinal fluid can explain variations in the effect of subretinal fluid motion on the retina. Pseudoplastic variation of subretinal fluid viscosity was confirmed using a cone-plate microviscometer. To explain the variability in viscosity between subretinal fluid specimens, 14 clinical variables associated with each of 46 specimens were examined. The strongest statistical relationship was between aphakia and lower viscosity.

[Spontaneous regression of senile cataract (author's transl)].

Spontaneous regression of senile cataract, an extremely rare occurrence, is illustrated with reference to findings in a woman patient born in 1892. The lens capsule was intact; an irritation which had gone unnoticed by the patient had led to posterior synechia of the iris and to the formation of a precapsular membrane in the lower pupillary region. At the time of examination intraocular pressure was in the upper normal range (20 mmHg). Following treatment of the " "aphakia" with appropriate cataract lenses the patient attained a remarkable 0.6% vision and Jaeger 3.

The use of contact B mode ultrasound in pediatric ophthalmology.

It has been shown that an ultrasound system such as the Bronson-Turner Contact B Mode can be added, fruitfully, to the armamentarium of the individual pediatric ophthalmologist. It can be used quickly and precisely with an ophthalmological training and without patient discomfort or anesthesia no matter what the age. Valuable anterior segment information can be readily gained without a waterbath. Examples are shown of children with opaque media who were found to have congenital cataracts and congenital aphakia, microphthalmos, PHPV, retinal anomalies and ectatic coloboma.

Vergence Formula for Estimating the Refractive Status of Aphakic Eyes in Pediatric Patients.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A vergence formula may provide a simple and reliable calculation of the refractive status of aphakic eyes. BACKGROUND: Measuring the refractive error of pediatric eyes with aphakia is difficult. This study investigated the accuracy and applicability of a vergence formula for estimating the refractive status of such eyes. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records, created between January 2016 and December 2018, of pediatric patients with aphakia was conducted. A vergence formula, based on axial length, was used to calculate the refractive status of the aphakic…

Results of congenital cataract surgery with and without intraocular lens implantation in infants and children.

BACKGROUND: Operations for congenital cataract in children in the past had resulted in aphakia. Improvement in surgical tools and techniques as well as in intraocular lens (IOL) implantation has led to correction of the aphakia by IOL implantation. We report the outcome of cataract surgery with and without IOL on these children in our institution between 1991-2008. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the medical records of all children who underwent surgery for congenital cataract were reviewed. The final study group included 144 children (218 eyes). Postoperative visual acuity (VA) …

Lens aplasia: a new mutation producing lens abnormality in the mouse.

One female with bilaterally closed eyelids was observed in a breeding colony of BALB/c mice in our laboratories. This eye abnormality was considered to be heritable because offspring with the same abnormality were produced from the mating of this female with a normal male littermate. From the results of various crosses made to determine the mode of inheritance, this abnormality is considered to be attributable to a mutation on a single autosomal recessive gene. Histologic observations of 30-day-old and adult mutant mice revealed various eye abnormalities such as microphthalmia, aphakia, absenc…

The transcription factor Pitx3 is expressed selectively in midbrain dopaminergic neurons susceptible to neurodegenerative stress.

The homeodomain transcription factor Pitx3 is critical for the survival of midbrain dopaminergic (mDA) neurons. Pitx3-deficient mice exhibit severe but selective developmental loss of mDA neurons, with accompanying locomotor deficits resembling those seen in Parkinson's disease (PD) models. Here, we identify specific mDA cell subpopulations that are consistently spared in adult Pitx3-hypomorphic (aphakia) mice, demonstrating that Pitx3 is not indiscriminately required by all mDA neurons for their survival. In aphakia mice, virtually all surviving mDA neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) and th…
