Serological cross-reactions against Yersinia enterocolitica in patients infected with other arthritis-associated microbes.

In order to investigate arthritis-triggering, serologically cross-reactive antigens, sera from patients infected with arthritis-associated microbes, Salmonellae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Sindbis-like alphavirus, were reacted against SDS-PAGE separated and immunoblotted Yersinia enterocolitica 0:3 antigens. These sera reacted with Yersinia to the same extent as did the control sera taken from patients with streptococcal, staphylococcal and Bordetella pertussis infections or from healthy blood donors. Moreover, the various sera produced different reactivity patterns, directed against several d

[PATHOGENESIS OF UNDIFFERENTIATED SPONDYLOARTHRITIS].

Spondyloarthritis or spondyloarthropathy (SpA) is a multifactorial disease in which a disturbed interplay occurs between the immune system and environmental factors on a predisposing genetic background, which leads to inflammation and structural damage of target tissue. Many recent researches on development of SpA showed important role of innate and adaptive immunity as well as of prominent bone tissue remodeling which leads to osteoproliferation and ankylosis. It is believed that possible sites of inflammation in SpA are entheses, sinovium and gut. Current knowledge on inflammation and tissue

Bacterial infections: the arthritis of leprosy.

Arthritis is a common feature of leprosy and contributes to disability. Direct invasion of joints and bones by mycobacteria may lead to a destructive arthritis in lepromatous disease. The infective process may involve few or many joints. Reactional states may occur spontaneously but usually after the initiation of anti-mycobacterial treatment. In both the type 1 reaction of borderline case and the type 2 reaction of the lepromatous disease, intense inflammation may occur at sites of infection. The immunology of the reactions is different but they share clinical features including a polyarthrit

[Epidemic parotitis and Reiter's syndrome].

A case of epidemic parotiditis in an adult male affected by Reiter's syndrome, is presented. The symptoms of Reiter's syndrome lasting 3 months after the recovery from epidemic parotiditis. Although descriptions of Reiter's syndrome of viral origin (adenovirus or hepatitis virus) exist, we have not found references of a relation to epidemic parotiditis. The diagnosis criteria of this syndrome is discussed, as well as the study of the epidemic parotiditis. We review the existing theories in order to justify the multiple etiology of this interesting syndrome.

Circinate vulvitis in Reiter's syndrome.

Two cases of Reiter's syndrome in women are described. The diagnosis was based on the presence of increased vaginal and cervical discharge containing excess leucocytes, arthritis, conjunctivitis, and HLA B27 tissue-typing antigen. In addition circinate lesions developed on the vulva similar to those seen on the glans penis. No previous description of these lesions has been traced and the name 'circinate vulvitis' is suggested for these lesions.
