Melanoma incidence in Australian commercial pilots, 2011-2016.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational exposure to cosmic and ultraviolet radiation may increase airline pilots' risk of cutaneous melanoma. Meta-analyses … 2016 by manually reviewing de-identified data in the medical records system of the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority. We estimated age-specific incidence rates and compared these with corresponding population rates using standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) as measures of relative risk. Expected numbers were calculated by multiplying age- and cale …

A 10-year retrospective review of airline transport pilots aged 60 to 63 in Japan.

BACKGROUND: On May 14, 1991, the Japanese Ministry of Transport issued an official notice allowing medically certified airline transport pilots aged 60 to 63 yr old (aged pilot) to work on non-scheduled flights. Since September 24, 1996, the official notice was revised to allow them to work on scheduled flights. The regulation requires pilots to pass both routine and additional aviation medical examinations. METHOD: Ten years have passed since the first regulation, so the medical records and the present status of aged pilots were reviewed and summarized. RESULTS: By the end of October 2000, …

Human identification through the analysis of smile photographs.

The comparison between antemortem and portmortem data comprehends the basis of the dental identification process. High-tech devices allow for optimal manipulation of postmortem data. However, in especial situations, the victims do not have records of dental treatments, making necessary the search for antemortem data from personal belongings. Smile photographs are one of the most common sources of dental information detected from personal belongings. In this context, the present study reports a forensic case in which a charred body was positively identified through the application of 3 techniqu

Aerial distribution of ONRAB baits as a tactic to control rabies in raccoons and striped skunks in Ontario, Canada.

During August 2006 and 2007, baits containing oral rabies vaccine, live adenovirus vector, known as ONRAB , were aerially distributed in SW Ontario, Canada. Bait acceptance during 2006 was 62 and 74% in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in areas baited at 150 baits/km(2) and 75 and 77% in plots baited at 300 baits/km(2). During 2007, bait acceptance for raccoons ranged between 59% and 80%, and 83% and 87%, in areas baited at 75 and 400 baits/km(2), respectively. Bait acceptance by skunks varied among plots (5-24%). Rabies virus-specific seroconversion during 2006 averaged 66 and 81% in raccoons in area

The Pope Air Force Base aircraft crash and burn disaster.

This report describes the initial hospital and burn center management of a mass casualty incident resulting from an aircraft crash and fire. One hundred thirty soldiers were injured, including 10 immediate fatalities. Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, managed the casualties and began receiving patients 15 minutes after the crash. As a result of repetitive training that included at least two mass casualty drills each year, the triage area and emergency department were cleared of all patients within 2 hours. Fifty patients were transferred to burn centers, including 43 pa

Health among commercial airline pilots.

BACKGROUND: The airline pilot works within a complex exposure environment that may present physiological challenges to long-term health. METHODS: This study investigated self-reported disease outcomes among a large group of active and retired commercial airline pilots in the United States and Canada. A survey methodology was used, including the collection of historical information. RESULTS: Of 10,678 surveys mailed, 6609 were returned (6533 men, 63 women). Given the limitations of survey methodology, increased disease rates among pilots were suggested for melanoma, motor neuron disease, and

[Clinico-radiometric studies of the eye in radioactive contamination].

The aim of the study was assessment of local and remote effects of radioactive substances on ocular media and development of measures to remove radionuclides from the eye. Radioactive substances getting into the eye in the form of aerosols, dust, or gaseous mixtures are unevenly distributed in it. The highest radioactivity was found on the skin of the eyelids and orbit, particularly so on the eyelashes and eyebrows, the least one on the cornea and in the conjunctival cavity. A follow-up of 8 to 17 years showed that timely removal of radionuclides from ocular surface prevented the development o

Initial management of open fractures sustained in the M1 aircraft disaster. Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Belfast (NLDB) Study Group.

There were 83 survivors of the M1 aircrash admitted to hospital; of these, 28 patients sustained a total of 40 open fractures. These open fractures were classified as 19 grade 3, 16 grade 2 and five grade 1. There were six upper limb fractures and 34 lower limb fractures. A high proportion of grade 3 open fractures were identified in this series (47 per cent) and one-half of these occurred at or below the ankle. This reflected the high energy and direction of the forces involved in the aircrash. The early results in terms of the incidence of wound infection (15 per cent), delayed wound healing

Management of Thoracolumbar Spinal Fracture Caused by an Aircraft Accident.

INTRODUCTION: Aircraft crashes are infrequent but often associated with high mortality, morbidity, and only a limited number of survivors. These events are classified as high-energy traumas as aircraft typically maintain significant vertical and horizontal speeds at impact. The forces generated can produce a wide range of injuries, from soft tissue damage to fractures, with particular concern for neurological injury. Due to the low number of survivors, few studies in the literature specifically address spinal injury patterns. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated thoracolumbar spinal injuries

Contemporary Outcomes and Patterns of Injury Associated With Parachuting Accidents.

BACKGROUND: Skydiving is an increasingly popular recreational activity in the United States and worldwide. While it is considered a high-risk sport, the United States Parachute Association reported a fatality of .28 per 100 000 jumps in 2022. Although mortality rates are low, the true rate of survivable injuries is unknown. Injuries requiring hospitalization are not uncommon and may be underreported in the literature. Anticipating these injuries and analyzing short-term outcomes following parachuting accidents would be useful for the development of mitigation strategies and to increase the saf

Audiometric profile of civilian pilots according to noise exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the audiometric profile of civilian pilots according to the noise exposure level. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study evaluated 3,130 male civilian pilots aged between 17 and 59 years. These pilots were subjected to audiometric examinations for obtaining or revalidating the functional capacity certificate in 2011. The degree of hearing loss was classified as normal, suspected noise-induced hearing loss, and no suspected hearing loss with other associated complications. Pure-tone air-conduction audiometry was performed using supra-aural headphones and acous

Slope of change throughout exposure treatment for flight phobia: the role of autonomic flexibility.

This study tested the hypothesis that flight-phobic patients experience change at different rates even when they are receiving identical treatment. Faster within-session rates of change (WSRC) were expected for patients who required fewer exposure sessions. The study also tested the theoretical role of autonomic flexibility on WSRC. High flexibility should be associated with faster rates of change. Thirty-seven flight-phobic patients were successfully treated with a computer-assisted fear of flying treatment. A significant negative correlation was found between total number of sessions and WSR

Procedural errors in air traffic control: effects of traffic density, expertise, and automation.

INTRODUCTION: Air traffic management requires operators to frequently shift between multiple tasks and/or goals with different levels of accomplishment. Procedural errors can occur when a controller accomplishes one of the tasks before the entire operation has been completed. The present study had two goals: first, to verify the occurrence of post-completion errors in air traffic control (ATC) tasks; and second, to assess effects on performance of medium term conflict detection (MTCD) tools. METHODS: There were 18 military controllers who performed a simulated ATC task with and without automa

Altitude-related hypoxia: risk assessment and management for passengers on commerical aircraft.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with pulmonary and cardiac disorders are particularly at risk of developing hypoxemia at altitude. Our objective is to describe the normal and maladaptive physiological responses to altitude-related hypoxia, to review existing methods and guidelines for preflight assessment of air travelers, and to provide recommendations for treatment of hypoxia at altitude. DATA SYNTHESIS: Falling partial pressure of oxygen with altitude results in a number of physiologic adaptations including hyperventilation, pulmonary vasoconstriction, altered ventilation/perfusion matching, and i

Covariation bias in flight phobics.

Covariation estimates (CEs) between fear-relevant (FR) stimuli (slides of airplane crash sites) or fear-irrelevant (FI) stimuli (slides of airplanes in flight or mushrooms) and an aversive outcome (electrical shock) were examined in 15 flight phobics (high-fear participants) and 15 non-flight-phobic individuals (low-fear participants) by means of an illusory correlation experiment. In spite of a random relationship between all slide categories and outcome (illusory correlation), flight phobics exhibited a covariation bias and showed higher CEs for the contingency between FR slides and shocks t

High mortality in the Thule cohort: an unhealthy worker effect.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to study mortality in the Thule cohort in order to clarify whether it is a selected population and to ascertain the possibility of misinterpretation when national mortality rates are used as reference in the analysis of occupational mortality. METHODS: The cohort consists of 4322 Danish men who were employed between 1963 and 1971 at the Thule air base in Greenland. One part of the cohort were employed during the clean-up period after the crash, in 1968, of a US bomber carrying nuclear weapons, the other part had been employed only outside the clean-up period. Crashes of commuter aircraft and air taxis. What determines pilot survival?

Pilots have been recognized as an occupational group having very high work-related death rates. Commuter aircraft and air taxis are far more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than are larger airplanes. To examine the factors related to pilot survival in commuter aircraft and air taxi crashes, we analyzed National Transportation Safety Board data for the years 1983 to 1988. Case fatality rates were calculated for the pilots-in-command and odds ratios were estimated from a multivariate logistic regression model for variables related to pilots, aircraft, and circumstances. During the 6-year

[Traumatic tricuspid insufficiency. 5 cases].

Five men (mean age 39 years) were followed up for 6 to 60 months for tricuspid valve regurgitation caused by a front-to-back injury (in a car in four cases, in an aircraft in one case). The time elapsed between the accident and the signal symptoms varied from 28 days to 20 years. The condition was diagnosed on clinical data (stage 2) and on the results of echocardiography and cardiac catheterization. Four patients were operated upon and provided with a bioprosthetic valve. The post-operative period was marked by resolutive atrioventricular block in one case and inferior myocardial infarction i
