Biosocial disparities in substance use among sexual-minority veterans with depression: national evidence on the role of depression-related clinical contact and medication use.

Sexual-identity disparities in substance use among U.S. veterans, and whether mental-health treatment mitigates risk for those with depression, remain under-examined. Using data on veterans from the 2021-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH; N = 7,212), disparities were estimated in past-30-day nicotine, marijuana, binge drinking, and polysubstance use, as well as severe psychological distress (K6≥13) and past-year suicidal ideation. Guided by a biosocial/minority-stress framework, multiple imputation was applied (m = 20) and survey-weighted logistic regression adjusting for age,…

How heterogeneous are MSM from Brazilian cities? An analysis of sexual behavior and perceived risk and a description of trends in awareness and willingness to use pre-exposure prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Brazil has the largest population of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Latin America, with a disproportional prevalence of inf … ssociated with high HIV perceived risk. Younger age, being gay/homosexual, having a steady partner, binge drinking, report of sexually transmitted infection (STI) and ever testing for HIV were associated with increased odds of high-risk behavior. Awareness and willingness to use PrEP increased from 2016 to 2018 in most cities. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, MSM socio-de …

Motivation to quit smoking among HIV-positive smokers in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation is emerging as an important component in current HIV care to reduce smoking-related adverse health outcomes. T … with motivation to quit were income, pain, currently taking Methadone, and the interaction between binge drinking and lifetime drug use. Individuals with the highest income level (OR = 2.2, 95% CI = 1.3-3.6), moderate income level (OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.1-3.1), and currently feeling pain (OR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.0-2.5) were more likely to be motivated to quit. Alcohol intoxication results in rapid loss in free magnesium in brain and disturbances in brain bioenergetics: relation to cerebrovasospasm, alcohol-induced strokes, and barbiturate anesthesia-induced deaths.

In vivo 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR) spectroscopy and ion-selective electrode measurements were undertaken to determine if administration of acute doses of alcohol (ALC, 0.2-6.6 g/kg), and lethal doses of barbiturate anesthesia, exert any influence on: (1) brain cellular bioenergetics, intracellular free Mg ([Mg2+]i) and intracellular pH (pHi), and (2) serum levels of ionized Mg (IMg2+), ionized calcium (ICa2+) and K+. Approximately 20-30 min after intraperitoneal administration of ALC to anesthetized rats, brain phosphocreatine (PCr)/ATP and PCr/inorganic phosphate (P(i)) ratios d

Ethanol-Related Behaviors in Mouse Lines Selectively Bred for Drinking to Intoxication.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a devastating psychiatric disorder that has significant wide-reaching effects on individuals and society. Selectively bred mouse lines are an effective means of exploring the genetic and neuronal mechanisms underlying AUD and such studies are translationally important for identifying treatment options. Here, we report on behavioral characterization of two replicate lines of mice that drink to intoxication, the High Drinking in the Dark (HDID)-1 and -2 mice, which have been selectively bred (20+ generations) for the primary phenotype of reaching high blood alcohol

Repeated adolescent restraint stress alters ethanol intake, body weight gain, and glucocorticoid excretion in male and female BALB/cJ and C57BL/6J mice.

Alcohol use occurs in both men and women, yet preclinical alcohol research has historically focused on male rodents. Adolescent stress is a known risk factor for later alcohol misuse, but how stress history interacts with sex to influence intake remains unclear. To address this, we examined whether repeated adolescent restraint stress alters voluntary ethanol consumption in male and female BALB/cJ and C57BL/6J mice. Mice underwent 14 days of 2-h daily restraint beginning on postnatal day (PND) 37, followed by 4 weeks of binge-like ethanol drinking using the Drinking-in-the-Dark protocol starti

The effects of ethanol on angiogenesis after myocardial infarction, and preservation of angiogenesis with rosuvastatin after heavy drinking.

The cardioprotective effects of moderate alcohol consumption and statins have been known for years. However, heavy or binge drinking confers a high risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different levels of alcohol consumption on acute myocardial infarction that was induced experimentally in rats, with a focus on the potential mechanism of angiogenesis and the effects of statins on heavy drinking. The experimental rats were fed low-dose ethanol (0.5 g/kg/day), high-dose ethanol (5 g/kg/day), and high-dose ethanol with rosuvastatin (10 mg/kg/day) during t…

The impact of alcohol priming on craving and motivation to drink: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: An initial dose of alcohol can motivate-or prime-further drinking and may precipitate (re)lapse and bingeing. Lab-based studies have investigated the alcohol priming effect; however, heterogeneity in designs has resulted in some inconsistent findings. The aims of this meta-analysis were to (i) determine the pooled effect size for motivation to drink following priming, measured by alcohol consumption and craving, and (ii) examine whether design characteristics influenced any priming effect. METHODS: Literature searches of PsycINFO, PubMed and Scopus in October 2020 (update

Collision victim travels for "seven kilometres" on top of the car that hit him.

A 26-year-old man, after a drinking binge, drove into a tram building site and collided with a track-grinding machine which left a fist-size hole in his windscreen. He then hit a construction worker who was catapulted onto the car roof. The worker held on to the antenna and the windscreen hole, while the car drove on for 7 km, reaching speeds of 90 km h(-1). The victim suffered several fractures and survived with relatively little consequential damage. The investigation showed the driver to have been under the influence of alcohol and cannabis. In trial, he claimed loss of memory and stated th

Alcohol habits and alcohol-related health conditions of self-defined lifetime abstainers and never binge drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that using lifetime abstainers as the reference group to examine the association between alcohol use and health-related consequences has several disadvantages. The aim of the present study was to examine the consistency of self-reported lifetime abstention and never-binge drinking, respectively, using national, longitudinal data collected in 2019 and 2020. Additionally, the prevalence of alcohol-related morbidity among lifetime abstainers was examined by linking survey data to alcohol-related morbidity data in a national patient register. METHODS: Data com…

Prenatal Ethanol Exposure Leads to Attention Deficits in Both Male and Female Rats.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal ethanol exposure (PE) causes multiple behavioral and cognitive deficits, collectively referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Studies show that 49-94% of FASD children exhibit attention deficits, even when they have normal IQs or lack severe facial deformities, suggesting that attention deficits could be caused by even moderate prenatal exposure to alcohol, of which the underlying neural mechanisms are still unclear. A valid rodent model could help elucidate this phenomenon. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A second-trimester equivalent binge drinking PE model was u…

Early life temperamental anxiety is associated with excessive alcohol intake in adolescence: A rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) model.

Teenage alcohol abuse is a major health concern, particularly because the majority of alcohol consumed by teenagers is via binge drinking, a known risk factor for increasing the likelihood for the development of future alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Identifying individuals at risk for excessive alcohol intake in adolescence is a step toward developing effective preventative measures and intervention programs. As adults with AUDs tend to self-medicate their anxiety with alcohol, this longitudinal study assesses the role of infant anxiety-like temperament in the development of adolescent alcohol …

Mental health matters? An examination of how anxiety and depression influence the alcohol-e-cigarette use relationship.

BACKGROUND: E-cigarette use has grown in popularity and is independently associated with alcohol use and mental health (anxiety/depression), but the interactions between alcohol and anxiety/depression with e-cigarette use have not been examined. We examined whether anxiety/depression would influence the association of both alcohol use frequency and heavy episodic drinking (HED) with e-cigarette use frequency, hypothesizing that alcohol use would be more strongly related to e-cigarette use among those with current anxiety/depression. METHODS: N = 11,006 adults (55 % female; 71 % non-Hispanic W
