Male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms. 2: Treatment.

The first part of this article (Dorey, 2000) described the subjective and objective assessment of men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). This article will examine treatment protocols for stress incontinence, urge incontinence, post-prostatectomy incontinence, post-micturition dribble, overflow incontinence, reflex incontinence and functional incontinence. Pelvic floor muscle exercises, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, urge suppression techniques, and fluid intake are discussed. It is concluded that men with LUTS can benefit from conservative treatment.

Gut focused behavioural treatment (biofeedback) for constipation and faecal incontinence in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether gut focused behavioural treatment (biofeedback) is a useful therapy in multiple sclerosis patients referred for constipation, incontinence, or a combination of these symptoms. Most patients with multiple sclerosis complain of constipation, faecal incontinence, or a combination of the two. Patients rate these bowel symptoms as having a major impact on their life. Until now the management of these problems has been empirical, with a lack of evaluated therapeutic regimes. METHODS: Thirteen patients (eight women, median age 38 years, median duration of multiple sc

The effect of home training with direct blood pressure biofeedback of hypertensives: a placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Home training in self-lowering of blood pressure using continuous blood pressure feedback has not previously been reported. Enhancement of laboratory-learned skills was hypothesized on the basis of outcomes from other intellectual, emotional and physical endeavours. OBJECTIVE: To examine the supplementary effect of home blood pressure biofeedback training. DESIGN: Thirty unmedicated, mild hypertensives participated in a randomized, double-blinded, modified contingency placebo-controlled study. METHOD: After suitable screening and baseline blood pressure measurements subjects und

Evaluating the response of mild hypertensives to biofeedback-assisted relaxation using a mental stress test.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the long term effect of a program of biofeedback-assisted relaxation on hypertensive patients by mental stress test reactivity. Twenty mild hypertensive patients were subjected to a mental arithmetic stress test before and six months after completing biofeedback-assisted relaxation therapy. The therapy consisted of 10 sessions of biofeedback-assisted relaxation instruction and continuous home practise. The study group was compared to a control group. The biofeedback-assisted relaxation treatment produced a mild improvement in blood pressure control a

Biofeedback for the treatment of fecal incontinence. Long-term clinical results.

UNLABELLED: Biofeedback therapy has been proposed as a treatment for fecal incontinence with good, short-term results. PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess long-term clinical results of biofeedback therapy compared with medical therapy alone and to assess manometric results in patients treated with biofeedback. METHODS: Two groups of incontinent patients were studied. Group 1 consisted of 16 patients (3 males and 13 females; mean age, 59.9 years). Etiologies treated by biofeedback included descending perineum syndrome (7), postfistula or hemorroidectomy (4), and miscellaneous (5). Grou

Nonsurgical treatment of detrusor overactivity in postmenopausal women.

Detrusor overactivity with subsequent urge incontinence becomes increasingly more prevalent as women age. Because of that, most women treated for detrusor instability and hyperreflexia are postmenopausal and are not always good candidates for the same treatments given to their younger counterparts. Nonsurgical treatments of detrusor overactivity are available to postmenopausal women.

The use of videonasopharyngoscopy for biofeedback therapy in adults after pharyngeal flap surgery.

Nasopharyngoscopy with videorecording was used as a visual feedback therapy tool to establish and promote consistent closure of the velopharyngeal ports during connected speech after pharyngeal flap surgery. Of the three adults in this report, two achieved consistent closure during connected discourse and have been discharged from therapy; the third demonstrated improved velopharyngeal closure but elected not to continue therapy. These outcomes demonstrate that nasopharyngoscopy biofeedback therapy is useful in helping the motivated adult to achieve better velopharyngeal closure during connect

Spasmodic torticollis: a behavioral perspective.

The literature on spasmodic torticollis is critically reviewed. The currently most popular etiological hypothesis characterizes torticollis as an extrapyramidal disorder, the symptoms of which are aggravated by stress, but there is no unequivocal evidence available to support this view. Psychological mechanisms have been suggested but not elaborated or tested in any detail. A wide range of treatments has been advocated but controlled studies have not been reported, and the problems of assessing outcome have never been tackled adequately. Behavioral treatments have been evaluated more rigorousl

Terminated Clinical Trial of TruVox: A Web-Based Intervention to Train Vocal Pitch and Resonance in Transfeminine People.

Transgender people often want to modify their voice to better match their gender identity and expression. Gender-affirming voice training can significantly improve their voice satisfaction, mental health, and quality of life, but is often inaccessible. In an NIDCD-funded grant, we therefore developed a novel website (TruVox) that is currently intended for transfeminine people and combines visual-acoustic biofeedback about vocal pitch and resonance with structured exercises. A clinical trial of TruVox was initiated but terminated by NIDCD before completion, and the current paper describes the m

Alpha-Band EEG Modulation as a Potential Aged-Related Biomarker for Biofeedback-Driven Motor-Cognitive Adaptability.

Background: Age-related changes in motor-cognitive function are associated with altered neural adaptability, particularly during tasks requiring integration of cognitive and motor processes. Dual-task paradigms are commonly used to assess such interactions; however, gait-based tasks may be unsuitable for older adults with balance impairments. Objective: This study used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine neural modulation during a controlled seated foot-tapping paradigm under dual-task and feedback conditions. Methods: Thirty-six cognitively healthy participants (18 younger adults aged 18-

Step Width Haptic Feedback for Gait Stability in Spinocerebellar Ataxia: Preliminary Results.

BACKGROUND: Wider step width and lower step-to-step variability are linked to improved gait stability and reduced fall risk. It is unclear if patients with spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) can learn to adjust these aspects of gait to reduce fall risk. OBJECTIVES: The aims were to examine the possibility of using wearable step width haptic biofeedback to enhance gait stability and reduce fall risk in individuals with SCA. METHODS: Thirteen people with SCA type 3 performed step width training (single session) using real-time feedback. RESULTS: Step width increased post-training (19.3 cm, interqua

Effect of sensor location for modifying center of pressure during gait using haptic feedback in people with chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: Gait retraining using haptic biofeedback medially shifts the center of pressure (COP) while walking in orthopedic populations. However, the ideal sensor location needed to effectively shift COP medially has not been identified in people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Can a heel sensor location feasibly be employed in people with CAI without negatively altering kinematics? Does a heel sensor placement relative to the 5th metatarsal head (5MH) impact COP location while walking in people with CAI? METHODS: In this exploratory crossover study, 10 participan

Feasibility of virtual reality and comparison of its effectiveness to biofeedback in children with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The utilization of virtual reality (VR) and biofeedback training, while effective in diverse populations, remains limited in the treatment of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (D/BMD). This study aimed to determine the feasibility of VR in children with D/BMD and compare the effectiveness of VR and biofeedback in children with D/BMD. METHODS: The study included 25 children with D/BMD. Eight children in the control group participated in a routine follow-up rehabilitation program, while the remaining children were randomly assigned to the VR (n = 9) and biofeedback (n
