Polyphenols and IUGR pregnancies: Maternal hydroxytyrosol supplementation improves prenatal and early-postnatal growth and metabolism of the offspring.

Hydroxytyrosol is a polyphenol with antioxidant, metabolism-regulatory, anti-inflammatory and immuno-modulatory properties. The present study aimed to determine whether supplementing the maternal diet with hydroxytyrosol during pregnancy can improve pre- and early post-natal developmental patterns and metabolic traits of the offspring. Experiment was performed in Iberian sows fed a restricted diet in order to increase the risk of IUGR. Ten sows were treated daily with 1.5 mg of hydroxytyrosol per kg of feed between Day 35 of pregnancy (30% of total gestational period) until delivery whilst 10

Early growth and development impairments in patients with ganglioside GM3 synthase deficiency.

Ganglioside GM3 synthase is a key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of gangliosides. GM3 synthase deficiency (GSD) causes a complete absence of GM3 and all downstream biosynthetic derivatives. The individuals affected by this disorder manifest severe irritability, intractable seizures and profound intellectual disability. However, we have found that most newborns seem symptom-free for a period of time after birth. In order to further understand the onset of the disease, we investigated the early growth and development of patients with this condition through this study. We compared 37 affecte

Low birth weight, very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight in African children aged between 0 and 5 years old: a systematic review.

Low birth weight (LBW<2500), very low birth weight (VLBW<1500), extremely low birth weight (ELBW<1500) infants are at high risk for growth failure that result in delayed development. Africa is a continent that presents high rates of children born with LBW, VLBW and ELBW particularly sub-Saharan Africa. To review the existing literature that explores the repercussions of LBW, VLBW and ELBW on growth, neurodevelopmental outcome and mortality in African children aged 0-5 years old. A systematic review of peer-reviewed articles using Academic Search Complete in the following databases: PubMed, Sco

Extensive mongolian spots with autosomal dominant inheritance.

BACKGROUND: Mongolian spots are benign skin markings at birth which fade and disappear as the child grows. Often persistent extensive Mongolian spots are associated with inborn error of metabolism. We report thirteen people of the single family manifested with extensive Mongolian spots showing autosomal dominant inheritance. CASE PRESENTATION: A one day old female child, product of second degree consanguineous marriage, born by normal vaginal delivery with history of meconium stained amniotic fluid and birth asphyxia. On examination the child showed extensive bluish discoloration of the body

Randomized double blind trial of Ambroxol for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome.

In order to test the ability of Ambroxol to improve the clinical course of respiratory distress syndrome and to reduce the incidence of complications a multicentre, randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind trial was conducted. Entry was limited to infants with a birth weight below 1500 g. A total of 179 neonates were enrolled, but 31 were later excluded because they had other diseases. Of the remaining 148 babies, 74 received Ambroxol (birth weight 1190 +/- 216 g; gestational age 29.1 +/- 1.9 weeks) and 74 placebo (birth weight 1168 +/- 216 g; gestational age 28.9 +/- 1.9 weeks). Intracranial hemorrhage in low-birth-weight twins during neonatal period.

Since twins have a higher incidence of premature birth, fetal distress, asphyxia and other pre- and intrapartum high-risk factors, it is reasonable to expect that they may be vulnerable to intracranial hemorrhage. Forty-seven pairs of low-birth-weight twins were studied during the newborn period by serial cranial ultrasound. The comparisons of groups, based on birth order, relative size of the neonates, and the mode of delivery, showed no significant differences in the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage between first and second twins, smaller and larger twins, or vaginal and cesarean deliver…

Assisted reproductive technology surveillance--United States, 2006.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) includes fertility treatments in which both eggs and sperm are handled in the laboratory (i.e., in vitro fertilization and related procedures).Patients who undergo ART procedures are more likely to deliver multiple-birth infants than women who conceive naturally. Multiple births are associated with increased risk for mothers and infants (e.g., pregnancy complications, premature delivery, low-birthweight infants, and long-term disability among infants). This report presents the most recent national data and state-specific results. REPOR

[Madelung's deformity: a case report and review of the literature].

Madelung's disease is a wrist deformity due to atrophy of the medial portion of the distal radial growth plate. It results in carpal anteromedial subluxation, limiting the range of motion. This skeletal dysplasia is rare and represents 1.7% of birth defects. The authors report a bilateral case in a 21 year old girl. This observational study allowed us to study the frequency, the signs and the means of diagnosis as well as adequate therapeutic measurements, in order to meet the expectations of patients.

[Very premature births: Dilemmas and management. Second part: Ethical aspects and recommendations].

In the first part of this work, the outcome following very premature birth was assessed. This enabled a gray zone to be defined, with inherent major prognostic uncertainty. In France today, the gray zone corresponds to deliveries occurring at 24 and 25 weeks of postmenstrual age. The management of births occurring below and above the gray zone was described. Withholding intensive care at birth for babies born below or within the gray zone does not mean withholding care but rather providing palliative care to prevent pain and suffering during the time period preceding death. Given the high leve

Factors associated with premature birth: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the socioeconomic, demographic, environmental, reproductive, behavioral, and health-care factors associated with preterm birth. METHODS: Case-control study, with case group composed of preterm infants and the control group by full term live births. Each case was paired with two controls according to sex and date of birth. Interviews were carried out with the mothers, as well as analysis of medical records. A logistic regression model was used for data analysis following the hierarchical order of entry of the blocks. RESULTS: 221 live births were allocated in the case gr

Outcomes of higher-order multiple pregnancies in an Australian setting.

BACKGROUND: Higher-order multiple (HOM) pregnancies are associated with significant maternal and neonatal morbidity, especially consequent to preterm birth. Multi-fetal pregnancy reduction (MFPR) may be provided, though its benefits in prolonging gestation and improving neonatal outcomes must be weighed against its risks. AIMS: The aim was to compare outcomes of HOM pregnancies where expectant management was chosen (EM) with those where MFPR was provided. METHODS: The method involved a retrospective study of HOM pregnancies referred to a single quaternary hospital between 2007 and 2016. The

Recent trends in the incidence of multiple births and associated mortality in England and Wales.

AIM: To review trends in multiple births and associated mortality in England and Wales since 1975, in the light of trends for earlier years; to assess, within the limitations of the available data, the extent of any association between multiple birth rates and assisted conception and drugs used for subfertility. METHODS: Data collected routinely in England and Wales, between 1975 and 1994, were retrospectively reviewed. These comprised Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) data collected at the registration of live and stillbirths and deaths occurring under the age of 1 year in Eng

Fetal oxygen and glucose utilization of uncomplicated monochorionic twins: Adapting to the intrauterine environment.

INTRODUCTION: Monochorionic twins (MC) develop under unique intrauterine conditions and show a high risk of compromise during fetal life. Here we describe umbilical vein blood flow (UVBF) and fetal oxygen and glucose utilization in uncomplicated MC twins and investigate possible differences within twin-pairs according to birth-order. METHODS: Prospective single-center study on 48 uncomplicated MC twins enrolled at the time of elective cesarean delivery. Ultrasound measurements of UVBF for Twin 1 and Twin 2 labelled according to birth-order were performed before spinal anesthesia. Umbilical ar

Uridine treatment protects against neonatal brain damage and long-term cognitive deficits caused by hyperoxia.

Exposure to excessive oxygen in survivors of preterm birth is one of the factors that underlie the adverse neurological outcome in later life. Various pathological changes including enhanced apoptotic activity, oxidative stress and inflammation as well as decreased neuronal survival has been demonstrated in animal models of neonatal hyperoxia. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of administering uridine, an anti-apoptotic agent, on cellular, molecular and behavioral consequences of hyperoxia-induced brain damage in a neonatal rat model. For five days from birth, rat pups
