Emergence of extensively drug-resistant and multidrug-resistant Shigella flexneri serotype 2a associated with sexual transmission among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, in England: a descriptive epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Shigellosis, also known as bacillary dysentery, is caused by Shigella spp that spread through fecal-oral contact and was traditionally associated with international travel in England. However, sexual transmission of Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) is now common. In September, 2021, emergence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) S sonnei harbouring plasmid-encoded blaCTX-M-27 raised concerns over further spread of this extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing gene. Using national surveillance in England, we identifie

A Web-Based Study of HIV Prevention in the Era of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Vulnerable HIV-Negative Gay and Bisexual Men, Transmen, and Transwomen Who Have Sex With Men: Protocol for an Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men continue to bear a large burden of the HIV epidemic in the United States and are among the only populations with increasing incidence in recent years. OBJECTIVE: The Together 5000 (T5K) Study aimed to enroll a US-based, racially diverse sample of HIV-negative men, transmen, and transwomen who are not on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) into an observational cohort to inform the design, implementation, scale-up, and evaluation of HIV prevention programs. METHODS: We used internet-based strategies to enroll a large, racially diverse

Club drug users had higher odds of reporting a bacterial STI compared with non-club drug users: results from a cross-sectional analysis of gay and bisexual men on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis.

OBJECTIVES: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can reduce HIV transmission risk for many gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men. However, bacterial STI (BSTI) associated with decreasing condom use among HIV PrEP users is a growing concern. Determining the characteristics of current PrEP users at highest BSTI risk fills a critical gap in the literature. METHODS: Gay and bisexual men (GBM) in New York City on HIV PrEP for 6 or more months (n=65) were asked about chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis diagnoses in the past 6 months. By design, half (51%) of the sample were club drug users. W

The Relationship Between Indicators of Depression and Anxiety and Sexual Orientation in Canadian Women.

Previous studies examining the associations between women's sexual orientation and mental health have obtained inconsistent results. Whereas … ety compared to greater same-sex or opposite-sex attraction. These findings suggest that, in women, bisexuality may be associated with higher risk of depression and anxiety than monosexuality. Future research may benefit from exploring risk factors potentially unique to the mental health of bisexual women.

Sexual orientation of men with pathological gambling: prevalence and psychiatric comorbidity in a treatment-seeking sample.

Although gay men represent a high-risk group for psychiatric illness and impairment, they are largely an understudied population. The purpose of the present study was to examine the sexual orientation and clinical correlates of men with pathological gambling (PG). Sexual orientation was assessed in 105 men presenting with PG. Gay and bisexual men with PG were compared with heterosexual men in terms of gambling symptoms, impairment, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Of 22 men (21.0%) with PG, 15 were gay (14.3%) and 7 were bisexual (6.7%). Gay and bisexual men vs heterosexual men were mor

The Relationship Between Childhood Gender Nonconformity and Experiencing Diverse Types of Homophobic Violence.

Experiences of homophobic violence seem to differ for various sexual-minority subgroups. Previous research has outlined that experiences differ for men and women, and for gender conforming and nonconforming lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and women (LGBs). In this article, these relationships are studied by making a distinction between four types of homophobic violence: verbal, physical, material, and sexual. In 2013, an online survey was designed to ask Flemish LGBs about their experiences of homophobic violence. The final sample consists of 1,402 Flemish sexual-minority individuals. The resul

Disclosing HIV status and sexual orientation to employers.

Seropositive gay and bisexual men who reveal their sexual orientation or HIV/AIDS status to their employer risk discriminatory reprisals. However, non-disclosure may limit potential social, emotional, and tangible support. Among our sample of 389 seropositive gay and bisexual men employed in the US, 52% were 'out' to their employer and 35% had disclosed their serostatus to him or her. Among gay men, employer awareness of their sexual orientation was related to their being European American (vs Latino or African American), being HIV-seropositive for more than 4 years, and having a gay or bisexu

The demographics of anal cancers are changing. Identification of a high-risk population.

One hundred fifty-six consecutive cases of carcinoma of the anal canal and margin diagnosed between 1959 and 1986 were reviewed. There were 27 cases between 1959 and 1967, 41 between 1968 and 1976, and 88 between 1977 and 1986. Although the female-to-male ratio remained constant at 1.5:1, a high-risk group emerged, consisting of male patients with admitted homosexuality, bisexuality, or a history of anal condylomata acuminata. During the earliest period, 8 percent of male patients were in this group; this subset rose to 72 percent during the latest period (P less than .05). While the number of…

Sexual Behaviors and Partner Characteristics by Sexual Identity Among Adolescent Girls.

PURPOSE: Data suggest that lesbian and bisexual adolescents engage in risky sexual behaviors at higher rates than heterosexual girls. Whether these findings also apply to girls of other sexual identities is less well understood. Potential differences in risky sexual behaviors reported by lesbian versus bisexual adolescents are also underreported in the literature. METHODS: Data were collected online in 2010-2011 among 2,823 girls, aged 13-18 years, in the United States. Multinomial logistic regression was used to quantify comparisons of sexual behaviors between (1) lesbian; (2) bisexual; and

Cigarette smoking behaviors and nicotine dependence at the intersection of sexual identity and sex in the United States: Findings from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking is disproportionately high among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults. Yet, collapsing these identities into a monolith can disguise important within group disparities (e.g., lesbian/gay versus bisexual female). The purpose of this study is to report recent national prevalence estimates and trends of cigarette smoking behaviors and nicotine dependence by sexual identity and sex. METHODS: Data were from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n = 210,392; adults 18+), a nationally representative, repeated cross-sectional study of substance use a

"They recognize me as a doctor": A peer mobilisation training programme to promote oral HIV self-testing and referral for acute HIV infection screening among gay and bisexual men and transgender women in coastal Kenya, an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Targeted peer mobilisation can improve access to HIV testing and care and may impact onward HIV transmission. We describe a qualitative exploration of the experience with a peer mobilisation training programme for oral HIV self-testing (OST) and referral for acute HIV infection (AHI) testing among gay and bisexual men (GBMSM) and transgender women (TGW) in coastal Kenya. METHODS: The training programme covered five modules: 1) safe sex, 2) OST, 3) AHI, 4) HIV partner notification services, and 5) mobilisation skills. Mobilisers attended two training sessions and weekly meetings be

Evaluating Web-Based Care for Mental Health and Substance Use Issues for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, and 2-Spirit Youths in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Community-Based Participatory Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health (MH) and substance use (SU) care supports are often difficult to access for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and 2-spirit (LGBTQ2S+) population. There is little known on how the shift to web-based care has affected and changed the experiences of LGBTQ2S+ youths within the MH care system. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine how web-based care modalities have affected access to care and quality of care for LGBTQ2S+ youths seeking MH and SU services. METHODS: Researchers used a web-based co-design method to explore this population's rela

Moderating Effect of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Use on the Association Between Sexual Risk Behavior and Perceived Risk of HIV Among Brazilian Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) with a higher perceived risk of HIV are more aware of and willing to use pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is an effective HIV prevention strategy, but there is a lack of data on how PrEP use might moderate the relationship between sexual risk behavior and perceived risk of HIV. Moreover, most studies measure perceived risk of HIV via a single question. OBJECTIVE: We estimated the moderating effect of PrEP use on the association between sexual risk behavior and perceived risk of HIV, measured with the 8-item Perceived Ri

Community-engaged mHealth intervention to increase uptake of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in China: study protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The large number of key populations in China who would benefit from HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the context of limited health system capacity and public awareness will pose challenges for timely PrEP scale-up, suggesting an urgent need for innovative and accessible interventions. This study aims to develop and pilot test a theory-informed, tailored mobile phone intervention that was codeveloped by young gay men, HIV clinicians and public health researchers to increase engagement in PrEP education and initiation among Chinese gay, bisexual and other men who have sex wit

Real-world trends in incidence of bacterial sexually transmissible infections among gay and bisexual men using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Australia following nationwide PrEP implementation: an analysis of sentinel surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Although data from large implementation trials suggest that sexually transmissible infection (STI) risk increases among gay and bisexual men who initiate HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), there are few data on the trends in population-level STI incidence in the years following widespread PrEP implementation. We aimed to describe trends in bacterial STI incidence among gay and bisexual men using PrEP across Australia in the context of broad PrEP availability through Australia's subsidised medicines scheme. METHODS: We analysed linked clinical data from HIV-negative gay and bisex

Prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, and related preventive and risk behaviours, among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver: results from the Engage Study.

OBJECTIVES: The last Canadian biobehavioural surveillance study of HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI) among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) was conducted in 2010. We designed a study to measure STBBI prevalence among GBM in metropolitan Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver and to document related preventive and risk behaviours. METHODS: The Engage Cohort Study used respondent-driven sampling (RDS) to recruit GBM who reported sex with another man in the past 6 months. At baseline, we examined recruitment characteristics of the samples, and

The Development and Testing of a Relationship Skills Intervention to Improve HIV Prevention Uptake Among Young Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men and Their Primary Partners (We Prevent): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) continue to be the group most heavily impacted by HIV in the United States. Substantial evidence indicates that up to two-thirds of new HIV infections occur in the context of a main partnership. Couples HIV testing and counseling (CHTC) has been shown to be a promising and effective strategy for increasing HIV prevention uptake among male couples; however, YMSM who are new to relationships may not have yet developed the efficacy, negotiation, and communication skills to navigate HIV testing in their relationship and co
