The effects of physical vibration on heart rate variability as a measure of drowsiness.

UNLABELLED: We investigated the effects of low frequency whole body vibration on heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic nervous system activation that differentiates between stress and drowsiness. Fifteen participants underwent two simulated driving tasks for 60 min each: one involved whole-body 4-7 Hz vibration delivered through the car seat, and one involved no vibration. The Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), a subjective measure of drowsiness, demonstrated a significant increase in drowsiness during the task. Within 15-30 min of exposure to vibration, autonomic (sympathetic)

Pre-contrast computed tomography reveals distinct characteristics and anatomical distribution of presumably lymphomatous lymph nodes in canine multicentric lymphoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Canine multicentric lymphoma (CML) is one of the most common hematopoietic neoplasms in dogs and is characterized by generalized lymphadenopathy involving peripheral and visceral lymph nodes. Accurate identification of lymphomatous lymph nodes (LLNs) is essential for diagnosis, staging, and monitoring treatment response. Conventional diagnostic methods such as palpation, radiography, and ultrasound may be limited by anatomical superimposition, restricted visualization of deep structures, and operator dependency. Computed tomography (CT) provides high-resolution, whole-body

BMI Changes Associated with DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: As patients undergoing deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction frequently anticipate improved abdominal contour, they may also expect a degree of meaningful weight loss. This study aims to clarify whether patients undergoing mastectomy with DIEP flap breast reconstruction experience a significant and durable change in body mass index (BMI). METHODS: A single-institution, retrospective cohort study was performed on patients who underwent DIEP flap breast reconstruction between 2020 and 2021. Patients were included if they had BMI data available from ≤

MRI-based lumbar cross-sectional indentation value is associated with spinopelvic sagittal balance in patients with degenerative kyphosis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether MRI-based paraspinal muscle morphology, assessed using the lumbar cross-sectional indentation value (LCIV), is associated with spinopelvic sagittal balance in patients with degenerative kyphosis (DK). METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 81 patients with DK, defined as degenerative thoracolumbar kyphosis and/or loss of lumbar lordosis, and 60 surgical controls with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis but without degenerative spinal deformity. LCIV was measured from T12-L1 to L4-L5 on axial T2-weighted MRI, and the mean LCIV (mLCIV) was calcu

Objective Standards and Subjective Preferences in Breast Aesthetics: A Scoping Review of the Ideal Breast.

Breast aesthetic ideals are shaped by anthropometric proportions, cultural norms, observer characteristics, and patient-specific expectations, yet the literature remains heterogeneous, with studies using variable measurements, image stimuli, and rating methods. This scoping review aimed to map the current evidence on objective morphometric standards and subjective aesthetic preferences in breast aesthetics and identify recurrent determinants of perceived breast attractiveness. A review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidance. MEDLINE and Embase were searched from inception to 28 O

Non-embolic complications of gluteal fat transfer: A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Gluteal fat grafting is a key component of aesthetic body contour surgery and ranks among the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures worldwide. While thromboembolic complications, such as fat embolism, dominate the literature due to their severe and often fatal outcomes, non-embolic complications have received less attention and standardization. These include infections, fat cysts, sciatic nerve injuries, and fat necrosis, which, despite being less severe, can significantly impact patient outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of non-embolic complications in glut

Current practices and challenges in inverse planning for gynecologic brachytherapy: insights from a multi-institutional study.

This study investigated the feasibility and reproducibility of inverse planning (IP) in gynecologic high-dose-rate brachytherapy (BT) across ten institutions (five IP and five manual). Two pre-defined cases (high-risk clinical target volume, CTVHR: 62.8 and 27.4 cm3) included the organs at risk (OARs), a tandem, ovoids, and 8 and 3 interstitial needles, respectively. Each institution generated BT plans according to its policy, assuming 30 Gy/15 fractions of whole-pelvis irradiation and 20 Gy/10 fractions of central shielding. Plans were evaluated using dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters. D

Volumetric Modulated Arc Radiotherapy Efficacy after Double Recurrences of Cardiac Sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) has recently become a pivotal treatment of oncological diseases due to the high-precise delineation of target volume contours with sparing organs at risk. This procedure requires a high level of experience and precision and is achievable only with advanced diagnostic support. Magnetic Resonance (MRI) and multimodality imaging, such as 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT), are fundamental in implementing radiotherapy guidance. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old patient underwent surgery twice to rem

Finite Element Assessment of a Novel Patient-Specific Mandibular Implant for Severely Atrophic Ridge.

Purpose: Dental reconstruction for patients diagnosed with severe mandibular bone atrophy using common dental implants is a challenging process. In such cases, surgeons may encounter challenges such as insufficient available bone, soft tissue, damage to the inferior alveolar nerve, and even the risk of bone fracture. In this study, a new design concept of mandibular patient-specific implants for severely atrophic ridges followed by finite element evaluation was presented to investigate the mechanical functionality of the concept. Method: The implant is comprised of two modular parts including

Flexible array coil for cervical and extraspinal (FACE) MRI at 3.0 Tesla.

Objective.High-resolution MRI of the cervical spine (c-spine) and extraspinal neck region requires close-fitting receiver coils to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Conventional, rigid C-spine receiver coils do not adequately contour to the neck to accommodate varying body shapes, resulting in suboptimal SNR. Recent innovations in flexible surface coil array designs may provide three-dimensional (3D) bendability and conformability to optimize SNR, while improving capabilities for higher acceleration factors.Approach.This work describes the design, implementation, and preliminaryin vivo

RapidBrachyDL: Rapid Radiation Dose Calculations in Brachytherapy Via Deep Learning.

PURPOSE: Detailed and accurate absorbed dose calculations from radiation interactions with the human body can be obtained with the Monte Carlo (MC) method. However, the MC method can be slow for use in the time-sensitive clinical workflow. The aim of this study was to provide a solution to the accuracy-time trade-off for 192Ir-based high-dose-rate brachytherapy by using deep learning. METHODS AND MATERIALS: RapidBrachyDL, a 3-dimensional deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model, is proposed to predict dose distributions calculated with the MC method given a patient's computed tomography

Triangular Fossa Graft for Philtral Reconstruction After Facial Burns: A 34-Year Experience.

BACKGROUND: Upper lip burns and skin grafts used for the resulting deformities all contract, leading to distortion of regional tissues and producing a flattened upper lip devoid of normal anatomic landmarks. Absence of the philtral contour draws attention to the upper lip and can accentuate other reconstructive inadequacies. Philtral restoration requires a 3-dimensional reconstruction capable of resisting contractile forces to restore and maintain normal relationships between the upper and lower lips. METHODS: This was a 34-year retrospective review of a single surgeon's experience using a co

Extracting the Jugular Venous Pulse from Anterior Neck Contact Photoplethysmography.

The jugular venous pulse (JVP) is the reference physiological signal used to detect right atrial and central venous pressure (CVP) abnormalities in cardio-vascular diseases (CVDs) diagnosis. Invasive central venous line catheterization has always been the gold standard method to extract it reliably. However, due to all the risks it entails, novel non-invasive approaches, exploiting distance cameras and lasers, have recently arisen to measure the JVP at the external and internal jugular veins. These remote options however, constraint patients to very specific body positions in front of the imag

Biophysical and photobiological basics of water-filtered infrared-A hyperthermia of superficial tumors.

Thermography-controlled, water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA) is a novel, effective and approved heating technique listed in the ESHO quality assurance guidelines for superficial hyperthermia clinical trials (2017). In order to assess the special features and the potential of wIRA-hyperthermia (wIRA-HT), detailed and updated information about its physical and photobiological background is presented. wIRA allows for (a) application of high irradiances without skin pain and acute grade 2-4 skin toxicities, (b) prolonged, therapeutically relevant exposure times using high irradiances (150-200 mW/cm2)

Hirano's cover-body model and its unique laryngeal postures revisited.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: In 1974, Minoru Hirano proposed his theory of voice production that is now known as the cover-body theory. He described the thyroarytenoid (TA) and cricothyroid (CT) muscles as the major determinants of vocal fold shape and stiffness, and theorized four typical laryngeal configurations resulting from unique TA/CT activations, with implications for the resulting voice quality. In this study, we directly observed the vocal fold medial surface shape under Hirano's unique TA/CT activation conditions to obtain a three-dimensional (3D) understanding of these laryngeal configur
