The authors report a case of antenatal diagnosis which is original in that a maternal illness was discovered that had not been thought of until then. Steinert's myotonic dystrophy can show up in two types after birth, a congenital type and a lethal type. The antenatal diagnosis at present consists in a combination of hydramnios and lack of fetal movements on ultrasound. Pregnancy in adolescence constitutes a high-risk obstetric situation and there is an obvious need for improvement in obstetric care for this age group. The unstable hip can be diagnosed in newborns with acceptable accuracy. The following factors are associated with the newborn unstable hip: female preponderance, breech presentations, cesarean section deliveries, first borns, left hip involvement, the Caucasian race, and increased birth weight. These findings suggest that the newborn unstable hip is determined prior to delivery, possibly within the last 4 weeks of intrauterine life. Diagnosed at birth, treatment in the average case is relatively short-term, effective, and without complication.

METHODS: This retrospective cohort study comprised 354 twin deliveries at a tertiary Norwegian hospital.
