Management of cat and dog bites.

An estimated 1 to 2 million Americans are bitten by cats and dogs each year. Most victims are children who are bitten by dogs. Dog and cat bite wounds may appear trivial, but if they are not managed appropriately, they can become infected and may result in functional impairment. Cat bite wounds on the hand have the greatest risk of infection. Pasteurella multocida, isolated in over half of all cat bite wounds and in 20 to 30 percent of dog bite wounds, can cause serious infection with severe complications. Amoxicillin-clavulanate is recommended for the outpatient treatment of dog and cat bite …

Ocular cat scratch disease.

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is infectious and can cause a multitude of systemic diseases in addition to ocular CSD. Rochalimaea henselae has been identified as the causative agent for ophthalmic manifestations of cat scratch disease. A noninvasive method of making a positive diagnosis of ocular CSD was recently developed.

Cat-scratch disease encephalopathy.

We report five cases of cat-scratch disease encephalopathy (CSDE), with a brief review of the literature in English, in which only 96 patients of CSDE have been described up to the present. The Gram-negative bacilli demonstrated by Warthin-Starry or Dieterle silver stains are regarded as the causative agent of CSDE. Administration of antibiotics is recommended. The onset of CSDE is usually acute and the prognosis favorable.

[Blood group typing in the cat].

Blood group serological diagnosis in cats is clinically relevant for the prophylaxis of blood group incompatibility reactions. In permanent blood donors, cats used for breeding and recipients with a history of prior blood transfusions, testing should consist of blood typing and antibody detection. As test sera and test cells are not commercially available and since parallel tests for various antibody qualities are necessary, they are usually performed in specialized laboratories. Incompatibility testing has a practical clinical relevance in finding a serological diagnosis before each blood tra…

[Cutaneous calcinosis of the footpads in a cat].

A case of cutaneous calcinosis of the footpads in a cat is described. The animal had developed lameness of one hindleg which was presumably due to infection by an abscess-like lesion of one pad. Histologically the lesion proved to be based on a cutaneous calcinosis. Shortly afterwards the animal died of uremia. Post mortem examination revealed fine granular shrinkage of the kidneys and signs of demineralisation of the skeleton accompanied by calcifications in the pads of all four paws, major arteries, hear, kidneys, lung and gastric mucosa. The clinical and morphological findings suggest a cut

Cholecalciferol rodenticide intoxication in a cat.

A 4-month-old 2.5-kg sexually intact female domestic shorthair cat was referred to the teaching hospital because of suspected cholecalciferol intoxication after ingestion of a cholecalciferol-containing rodenticide. At referral, the cat was hypercalcemic, hyperkalemic, and acidotic. Despite management of hypercalcemia and preservation of renal function with physiologic saline solution, furosemide, dopamine, and calcitonin, the cat died, apparently as a result of extensive pulmonary mineralization.

Retinal degeneration in the dog and cat.

Retinal degenerations in the dog and cat are an important cause of blindness in these species. Particularly in the dog, many retinal degenerations, collectively called progressive retinal atrophy, seen in clinical practice are inherited. The clinical signs, electrophysiological findings, pathology, and underlying biochemical defects in the retina vary from breed to breed. Specific categories of inherited retinal degeneration are now recognized, and classified into early onset photoreceptor dysplasias, late-onset retinal degenerations, or retinal degenerations secondary to primary RPE dystrophy

Cat-scratch disease bacteria.

Cat-scratch disease is a benign inoculative lymphoreticulosis, related to the presence of a polymorph bacillus, Warthin-Stary silver stained, Gram negative as assessed by Brown-Hopp staining. It is found in the capillary walls and in macrophages bordering the lymph node sinusoids at the site of inoculation, in regional subacute adenopathy before softening, in internal organs and blood cultures of systemic infections, occurring more often in immuno-compromised patients. These bacteria have been demonstrated in subcutaneous vascular nodules, near to histiocytoid hemangioma in AIDS patients; thes

Neuroretinitis in cat scratch disease.

We report a patient with neuroretinitis, whose associated lymphadenopathy, exposure to cats, and strongly positive cat scratch antigen skin tests suggested the diagnosis of cat scratch disease. Cat scratch disease should be added to the list of infectious agents believed to produce the clinical picture of neuroretinitis.

Neurovisceral sphingomyelinosis in a Siamese cat.

This report presents the clinical, morphological and biochemical findings on an 11-month-old female Siamese cat with neurovisceral sphingomyelinosis. Gross pathological features and histochemical findings are compared with the human disease counterpart and the previously described animal models. Hepatomegaly was observed while splenomegaly was not. Although sphingomyelin in liver and spleen was biochemically elevated, histochemical results in this case were slightly different from those previously recorded in human and feline Niemann-Pick disease. These results suggest that this feline case mi

Priapism after castration in a cat.

Priapism developed in a cat 2 days after castration and strangury. The priapism was unresponsive to massage and antimicrobial treatment. Because of penile engorgement and necrosis, a perineal urethrostomy was performed. Clinical signs of priapism resolved after urethrostomy. Histologic examination of tissues revealed vascular stasis within the corpus cavernosum penis and funiculitis of the right spermatic cord.

[Usefulness of CAT in retroperitoneal fibrosis].

We report on six patients with with retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) who were evaluated preoperatively by CT. Patient scans disclosed a retroperitoneal fibrous layer localized between L4-S2, S3 in four of the six cases (65%). Similarly, varying degrees of uni-or bilateral utero-hydronephrosis were observed in five patients, and venous involvement with collateral abdominal circulation was observed in two. The surgical findings coincided with those of the CT scans, and disclosed that in the two patients with no evidence of a fibrous layer on the scan, this was due to the its being localized to an
