Three primitive arteries - the trigeminal, otic and hypoglossal take the names according to their close relation with the V, VIII and XII cranial nerves, while at the cervical level, the first segmental artery is named the primitive proatlantal intersegmental artery. When the human embryo is 4 mm long, these arteries serve as transitory anastomoses between primitive internal carotid arteries and bilateral longitudinal neural arterial plexus, which is the precursor of future basilar artery. Normal and/or abnormal morphofunctional aspects of the prenatal and postnatal forms of the otic artery ar

Mid-trimester soft sonographic markers have been linked with aneuploidies. This article describes the individual sonographic markers used in the genetic sonograms, and reviews the current relevant Literature. The significant soft markers are: nuchal thickness, echogenic bowel, shortened limbs and absence of nasal bone. The soft markers which are not significant as an isolated finding in young patients but are significant in combination with the biochemical markers, or in older age are: intracardiac echogenic focus, choroid pLexus cyst, pyelectasis and single umbilical artery. There are several

The clinical utility and limitations of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) studies are reviewed. Somatosensory evoked potentials may help to identify a lesion in the sensory pathways, but do not indicate its nature. In multiple sclerosis subjects, the SEP findings may help to establish that there is a multiplicity of lesions, but multimodality evoked potential abnormalities may occur in other disorders. Somatosensory evoked potential abnormalities do not reflect either the severity or the prognosis of cervical spondylosis and do not reliably permit early recognition of the totality of trauma

Three cases of complex pelvic fractures associated with lumbo sacral roots lesions are reported. The authors stress this possible association should be suspected through clinical and conventional radiological findings. The contrast sacco-radiculography brings up confirmation. However the so called pseudo-meningocele is by far of less topographical value than the same myelographic findings at cervical level (for brachial plexus avulsion injuries). Direct and concise evaluation is performed by surgical approach of roots during a homolateral hemi-laminectomy. This procedure allows to appreciate t

Unstimulated pairs of rat submandibular glands were compared with regard to their wet weight, total protein content and kallikrein antigenic activity. Paired glands from the same animal were found to be comparable, whereas differences from one animal to another were considerable. One of two paired glands was extirpated and used as control, and the other was subsequently subjected to stimulation. Salivary secretion was induced parasympathomimetically (intraperitoneal injections of pilocarpine; perfusion with acetylcholine and electrical stimulation of the ductal nerve plexus near the gland hilu

BACKGROUND: Hyoscine butyl bromide (HBB) is a muscarinic receptor antagonist, which inhibits the parasympathetic (cholinergic) activity of the utero-cervical plexus. It has been used to augment the progress of labor. Although, it cannot initiate uterine contractions, in combination with prostaglandins, it may shorten the duration of induction of labor due to its antimuscarinic action on the cervix, if it is administered according to the recently published scientific evidence.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of hyoscine butyl bromide used concomitantly with prostaglandins on the time taken …

Scapulothoracic dissociation is the traumatic separation of the scapula from the thoracic wall. It is the outcome of rare, high-energy trauma to the shoulder girdle and may include vascular and neurologic damage of the upper extremity. Of the few cases presented in the literature, the majority refer to polytrauma patients. We present a rare variant of scapulothoracic dissociation combined with comminuted fractures of both the scapula and the clavicle associated with brachial plexus palsy. There were also vertebral fractures of the spinous processes of C6, T4, T5, and T6, of the transverse proc

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The great auricular nerve (GAN) arises from C2-C3 and provides innervation over the skin in the pre-auricular region, jaw angle, posteroinferior pinna, and mastoid. Although damage to the GAN has been reported following trauma or procedures nearby this nerve course, neuralgia of this nerve is uncommon with knowledge based on a handful of case reports in literature. The objective of this study is to describe the presentation, treatment, and outcome of 13 cases of GAN neuralgia.
METHODS: Case series. Retrospecive review of charts from 1994 to 2018 with diagnoses: "auricula

Contralateral C7 (cC7) root transfer to reconstruct brachial plexus injury (BPI) has been widely used. A revised technique that cC7 root was transferred to lower trunk via the prespinal route with direct neurorrhaphy has been reported clinically. The aim of this experimental study was to develop an animal model of the modified surgical approach in order to obtain quantification index of postoperative nerve regeneration and muscle morphology. Sixty adult Sprague-Dawley rats randomized into experimental and control groups of 30 each. In the experimental group, after total brachial plexus injury

OBJECTIVES: To describe all the CT findings after in situ contrast injection just before steroid injection and to recognize the abnormal aspects associated with intravascular contamination.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 248 cervical transforaminal steroid injections done at the university hospital in Dijon, France, in 2008-2012, to treat cervicobrachial neuralgia inadequately improved by optimal medical treatment for at least 3 weeks. Features describing the opacification patterns were recorded.
RESULTS: Five main nonvascular opacification patterns were identified: clump

The thoracic outlet compression syndrome has a great number of clinical variations. Arterial and venous perfusion impairment is an associated symptom, nerve irritation can occur with or without vascular problems. The degree of nerve damage ranges from transient irritation to permanent motoric and sensory defects. The lack of space in the supracostoclavicular compartment is the cause for nerve compression. The degree of neural damage depends on the degree and duration of the compression. Anatomic variations between the clavicle and first rib are frequent causes for the TOS: accessory ribs and m

INTRODUCTION: In anterior cervical stabilization, collapses of the grafted bone with resulting localized kyphosis and graft dislocation has been reported. It was the aim of this clinical trial to evaluate the benefit of additional plating while taking specific implant-related complications into account.
METHODS: The results of single level anterior cervical spinal fusion were evaluated. In 44 patients suffering from chronic cervical radicular pain with degenerative changes, arthrodesis with iliac-crest bone and plate fixation was performed. Apart from clinical parameters, the pre- and postope

The effect of electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve on choroidal blood flow in the cat was investigated. Flow at various sites in 30 pentobarbital-anesthetized cats was continuously measured trans-sclerally using a laser Doppler flowmeter. Changes in either direction, increases and decreases, occurred in response to electrical stimulation of the peripheral cut end of the cervical sympathetic nerve. These changes in flow appeared to depend on the site of choroidal blood flow measurement, as decreases were seen at sites with a high baseline blood flow and increases at sites wi

A 42-year-old woman developed lower extremity weakness and sensory loss 1 year after external and intracavitary radiotherapy for Stage IB carcinoma of cervix. She has been followed for 5 years posttreatment, and the neurologic abnormalities have persisted, but no evidence of recurrent carcinoma has been found. We believe this to be a rare case of sacral plexus radiculopathy developing as a late complication after radiotherapy. Suggestions are made for improving the radiotherapy technique to prevent this complication in future cases.
