In this series of nine patients with diastrophic dwarfism, multiple problems with the spine were noted. Scoliosis was present in all patients and usually became rapidly progressive in the preadolescent years. The scoliosis had a strong tendency to become severe and rigid, with a large rotatory component. Early brace treatment appeared to have merit. Cervical kyphosis was noted in four patients; it resolved in three patients, but progressed in one to a 130-degree deformity, quadriplegia, and death. All patients in this series had spina bifida occulta in the cervical spine. Six of the nine patie

Aegicetus gehennae is a new African protocetid whale based on a partial skull with much of an associated postcranial skeleton. The type specimen, Egyptian Geological Museum, Cairo [CGM] 60584, was found near the base of the early-Priabonian-age (earliest late Eocene) Gehannam Formation of the Wadi Al Hitan World Heritage Site in Egypt. The cranium is distinctive in having ventrally-deflected exoccipitals. The vertebral column is complete from cervical C1 through caudal Ca9, with a vertebral formula of 7:15:4:4:9+, representing, respectively, the number of cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, an

Cervical artificial disc replacement (CADR) as a new method for the treatment of cervical spondylosis, is becoming a basic and clinical research. Compared with the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), the biggest difference of CADR lies in the reconstruction of the cervical vertebra height and physiological curvature, retaining the spinal physiological function maximally and reducing the degenerative changes in adjacent segments. A large number of clinical investigation have suggested that ACDR can become an operation method to replace the ACDF. However, the complications and the pr

Axial compressive loading, the principal cause of spinal cord quadriplegia in American football, is produced when a player is forcibly struck on the crown of the helmet. This impact subjects the small cervical vertebrae to a large compressive force that often produces stress that exceeds the failure limit of the spine. Several factors influence the outcome in axial collisions, including the available kinetic energy, the displacement needed to dissipate the energy, and the end conditions of the collision (i.e., the position of the head). Effective intervention of this catastrophic injury requir…

The cervical and the lumbar vertebrae were analyzed by computed tomography in two groups. One group consisted of the patients with developmental stenosis of the cervical spine (the smallest AP diameter of the cervical spinal canal in the lateral view of X-ray was less than 12 mm) and the other was the control group (the smallest diameter was more than 14 mm). The canal to body ratio of the cross-sectional area (CBR), the modified Jones' "canal to body ratio" (JNS) and the flat index of the vertebral canal (FI) were measured at C4,C5, C6, L4 and L5. The shape of the vertebral canal of L4 and L5

We describe a case of a 70 year old man suffering from sudden weakness of the left foot. Preoperative neuroimaging examinations showed an oval mass 2 cm in maximal diameter with intratumoral hemorrhage at the seventh cervical vertebra. The mass was supplied by the right lateral thoracocervical artery and was drained to the anterior spinal vein. The intraoperative findings showed the hard reddish tumor was not attached to the pia and the posterior root of the fifth cervical nerve was totally encased by the tumor. A histopathological examination revealed that hemangioblastoma encasing the poster

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy usually arises in patients in their late 40s or early 50s, most frequently at the C5/6 and C6/7 levels. Recently, excellent results have been attained with microsurgery in cases of cervical spondylosis. On the other hand, treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy in patients with athetoid dystonic cerebral palsy entails several problems. The authors report three cases of such troublesome myelopathy. A 34-year-old male with severe athetoid movement showed cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Myelography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated compression

We present the case of a 50-year-old man who visited our emergency department 12 h after an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident complaining of shoulder pain and neck stiffness. Cervical spine radiographs were obtained and interpreted as normal, and the patient was discharged. Subsequent review by a radiologist raised the question of a second cervical vertebra (C-2) abnormality, and the patient was recalled. Cervical computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an unstable oblique fracture of C-2 and a congenital nonfusion of the arch of C-1. The patient was placed in halo traction, and subsequent

A 20-year-old male incurred a vertex injury of the skull, disruption of the transverse ligament of the atlas, and a Jefferson fracture--lateral displacement of the lateral masses of the atlas in relation to the lateral margins of the second cervical vertebra. The combination of Jefferson fracture with transverse ligament disruption was not appreciated initially (or even late) because of the head injury. The hospital course was complicated by the patient's initial unconsciousness and restlessness caused by associated intracranial injury. Roentgenograms in all views of the cervical spine were es

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: To report a new surgical technique of the primary cervical osteosarcoma in the atlas.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Primary osteosarcoma of the atlas is extremely rare. This is the first report that describes a surgical treatment of the primary osteosarcoma in the atlas. Resection of an osteosarcoma in the atlas is very difficult because of the complex and important anatomic structures that surround it, and secure reconstruction of the atlas is difficult as well.
METHODS: A 48-year-old man was referred to our institute with a 10-month history of a palpabl

BACKGROUND: Many different surgical procedures have been employed in the treatment of fracture dislocation at the middle to lower cervical spine. However, consistent protocols and procedures have not been fully established for the surgical correction of an irreducible old cervical fracture dislocation associated with spinal deformity.
METHODS: We report a case of irreducible cervical fracture dislocation and kyphoscoliosis, in which surgical simulation using a three-dimensional full-scale model was useful for circumferential corrective osteotomy at the C6-C7 level. A 56-year-old man was diagn

The combination of movement, location, and anatomy of the axis predisposes it to multiple and varied fracture/dislocations distinct from other vertebrae. We examine all forms of axis fractures and address the appropriate treatment for each specific fracture type. In a retrospective review of 625 cervical spine fractures during an 8-year period, we found 107 axis fractures. There were 25 hangman's fractures (23%), 59 odontoid fractures (55%), and 23 miscellaneous fractures (22%). Each case was characterized by age, sex, the presence of associated injuries, presenting symptoms and findings, init

A case of a 61-year-old male patient suffered chronic renal failure and dialysed for 23 years with destructive cervical spondylarthropathy is presented. The patient presented with sudden onset of cervical pain radiating into his shoulders without neurological deficits. CT and MRI of the cervical and thoracic spine revealed severe destructive changes and compressive fractures of C6 and C7 vertebrae which caused the narrowing of the nerve root canals at these levels. A 360-degree fixation was performed to treat the unstable fracture and the patient's pain (C6 and C7 corpectomy, autolog bone graf
