The invisible scars: a critical perspective on the social-behavioral impact of emotional abuse in Ugandan students.

INTRODUCTION: School-based emotional abuse remains an under-recognized form of childhood adversity within many educational settings, despite growing evidence of its potential influence on students' psychosocial wellbeing. This qualitative study explored how students and school personnel in six primary and secondary schools in Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso District, Uganda, described and interpreted experiences of emotional abuse and their perceived social and behavioral consequences. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was employed. Forty-six participants were purposively recruited, comp

Contrasting mental health correlates of physical and sexual abuse-related shame.

OBJECTIVE: This study represents an initial attempt to contrast behavioural and mental health correlates of shame as a result of physical abuse (PA) and sexual abuse (SA). Because they are distinctive forms of injury, it is possible that corollary shame from these injuries follows unique trajectories and ultimately results in different health challenges. METHOD: Self-report data from a survey on the health of youth receiving protective services for reasons of PA and SA was used. It included standardised measures, such as the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Trauma Symptoms Checklist for Childr

Expanding the relationship context for couple-based HIV prevention: Elucidating women's perspectives on non-traditional sexual partnerships.

INTRODUCTION: HIV prevention interventions targeting couples are efficacious, cost-effective and a key strategy for preventing HIV transmission. Awareness of the full spectrum of relationship types and underlying complexities, as well as available support mechanisms in a given context, are critical to the design of effective couple-based interventions. OBJECTIVE: This paper is based on a sub-analysis of a qualitative research study investigating HIV disclosure dynamics amongst pregnant women living with HIV in Durban, South Africa. The sub-analysis explored the nature of participants' social

Antipoverty Impact Of Medicaid Growing With State Expansions Over Time.

Out-of-pocket spending on health care pushed over 10.5 million Americans into poverty in 2016. Medicaid helps offset this risk by providing medical coverage to millions of poor and near-poor children and adults and thereby constraining out-of-pocket medical spending. This article examines whether recent state-level expansions to the Medicaid program resulted in reductions in poverty and whether future changes to the program are likely to have similar impacts on poverty. Using a difference-in-differences research design, we found that the recent Medicaid expansion caused a significant reduction

Australian primary school communities' understandings of SunSmart: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Skin cancer represents a major health issue for Australia. Childhood sun exposure is an important risk factor and evidence suggests the use of sun protection measures by Australian school children could be improved. This study examines how the SunSmart Program, a school-based skin cancer prevention resource, can be supported to further increase sun protection behaviours to assist in lowering skin cancer incidence. METHODS: The Health Promoting Schools (HPS) framework was adopted to select key stakeholders from a convenience sample of five school communities. Students, teaching sta

Evaluation of a sun safety education programme for primary school students in Switzerland.

The incidence of skin cancer has increased worldwide, with rates being especially high in Switzerland compared with other European countries. Extensive sun exposure during childhood is considered a key factor for skin carcinogenesis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of a school-based sun safety education programme developed by the Swiss Cancer Leagues on primary school students' sun-related knowledge, protective behaviours and sunburn rates. In summer 2011, 1-h sun safety education sessions were held at 33 primary schools throughout the Canton of Zurich (North-Eastern Switzerlan

Service needs of adolescent parents in child welfare: Is an evidence-based, structured, in-home behavioral parent training protocol effective?

SafeCare is an evidence-based behavioral parent training intervention that has been successfully implemented in multiple state child welfare systems. A statewide implementation in Oklahoma established the effectiveness of SafeCare with a diverse group of parents, which included adolescent parents under 21 years of age, a particularly at-risk group. The current study examined whether SafeCare is also effective for this subsample of 294 adolescent parents with regard to child welfare recidivism, depression and child abuse potential, and attainment of service goals. Post-treatment adolescent pare

Age assurance for online sexual content: applying the health policy triangle to UK early signals and transferable safeguards for sub-Saharan Africa.

Children's exposure to sexually explicit online material has been associated with early sexualisation, distorted gender norms, risky sexual behaviours, and adverse mental health outcomes, with first exposure often occurring before the age of 12 and increasingly through mainstream digital platforms. Age assurance has therefore emerged as a regulatory approach that shifts the responsibility of restricting underage access from parents to digital services. The United Kingdom Online Safety Act 2023 establishes one of the first comprehensive statutory age assurance frameworks, combining risk-based d

"Sleepless nights are a daily reality for us" how women experiencing homelessness in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia describe street life: a photovoice study.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness among women of reproductive age is a global problem. Several unique gender-based issues affect homeless women's well-being, including reproductive health issues, their homelessness experiences, and a high rate of sexual violence. In this study, we aimed to describe women's experiences of street homelessness in their own terms and their suggestions to address their unmet needs. METHODS: This photovoice study draws on photos, focus group discussions, and semi-structured interviews. We conducted the study in collaboration with women in their reproductive years experien

Child maltreatment and adult socioeconomic well-being.

OBJECTIVE: Little empirical research has examined the impact that child maltreatment may have on victims' long-term socioeconomic well-being. The current study sought to address this gap by exploring the relationship between childhood experiences of abuse and neglect and several indicators of socioeconomic well-being in adulthood. METHOD: Data from the nationally representative National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) (n=5004) were analyzed using logistic regression models to examine whether maltreatment in childhood (any maltreatment, physical abuse, sexual abuse, severe neglect, and multiple types

Ethical and definitional considerations in research on child sexual violence in India.

BACKGROUND: While critically important, child sexual violence (CSV) research poses numerous ethical and safety challenges. Recently, the studies dedicated to understanding and addressing CSV in India have been on the rise, but no published ethical guidelines to direct such research currently exist. To help inform ethical and safety recommendations for the design, conduct, and reporting of future CSV research in India and similar settings, we systematically reviewed the ethics and safety practices reported in recent Indian CSV literature. METHODS: A multi-tiered approach was used to understand

Vaccination Coverage by Age 24 Months Among Children Born in 2021 and 2022 - National Immunization Survey-Child, United States, 2022-2024.

The National Immunization Survey-Child monitors coverage with recommended routine childhood vaccines. For data collected in survey year 2024, which include children born in 2021 and 2022, the household response rate (23.4%) and availability of adequate provider data for children with completed interviews (51.4%) were comparable to those from earlier survey years. For most vaccines, coverage by age 24 months was similar among children born in 2021 and 2022 and those born in 2019 and 2020. Declines in coverage of 1-2 percentage points were observed for the primary series of Haemophilus influenza

What are practitioners' views of how digital health interventions may play a role in online child sexual abuse service delivery?

INTRODUCTION: Online child sexual abuse (OCSA) affects considerable numbers of children globally and is associated with a variety of mental health problems. Existing practitioner studies suggest that young people are infrequently asked about online abuse and practitioners have a fragmented understanding of the problems experienced or how they might approach them. There are very few evidence-based interventions that guide clinical assessment or practice. Digital Health Interventions (DHIs) have the potential to be an effective option where children and young people's services are challenged, in
