Climate change is expected to bring about global warming and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events. This may consequently influence the transmission of food-borne diseases. The short term associations between climatic conditions and Salmonella infections are well documented in temperate climates but not in the tropics. We conducted an ecological time series analysis to estimate the short term associations between non-outbreak, non-travel associated reports of Salmonella infections and observed climatic conditions from 2005 to 2015 for Singapore. We used a negative binomial tim

Climate change and increasing thermal stress represent major challenges for intensive pig production systems, affecting animal performance, welfare, and farm profitability. In this context, integrative models such as ThermiPig are increasingly used to simulate the combined effects of climate, housing, and animal responses on swine production performance. However, the complexity of these models requires a better understanding of how input parameters influence simulation outputs. This study applied a two-step global sensitivity analysis to investigate the influence of nine biological, environmen

Driven by climate change, tropical cyclones (TCs) are predicted to change in intensity and frequency through time. Given these forecasted changes, developing an understanding of how TCs impact insular wildlife is of heightened importance. Previous work has shown that extreme weather events may shape species distributions more strongly than climatic averages; however, given the coarse spatial and temporal scales at which TC data are often reported, the influence of TCs on species distributions has yet to be explored. Using TC data from the National Hurricane Center, we developed spatially and t

Accurate reservoir storage forecasting is critical for water security and risk management, yet most data-driven approaches emphasize short-term predictive skill without accounting for long-term changes in storage capacity caused by sedimentation. This study addresses this gap by examining whether monthly, hydro-climatic machine learning forecasts of effective water storage capacity can be meaningfully evaluated against observed, multi-year capacity changes derived from bathymetric surveys. Forecasting performance is evaluated at the rainfall-driven Mingde Reservoir and the highly regulated Shi

This study examined whether social support tied to relocation efforts and neighborhood social climate may mediate the effects of stressful life events on mental health outcomes following Hurricane Katrina. Participants were 108 adult persons made homeless by Hurricane Katrina and evacuated to Columbia, South Carolina. Civic leaders developed an intervention model that emphasized (a) a one-stop point of entry, (b) living in hotels and apartments rather than shelters, and (c) matching hotels with volunteer "hosts" to assist in relocation efforts. Results revealed that perceived neighborhood fact

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease which is predominantly endemic in tropical and subtropical countries. In Bangladesh, 321,179 dengue cases were reported in 2023, followed by 101,214 cases in 2024, which highlights a severe and ongoing public health challenge. Dengue transmission risks are shaped by climatic variability, rapid urbanization, socio-economic vulnerability, and healthcare strain. But existing dengue surveillance models remain limited in their ability to capture district-level disparities in Bangladesh. This study aimed to develop a district-level dengue early warning system

BACKGROUND: Climate variability may influence tuberculosis (TB) burden, but associations between the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and TB incidence remain poorly characterized across China.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify associations of ENSO and meteorological factors with TB notification incidence and assess regional and age-specific heterogeneity.
METHODS: Monthly TB surveillance data from 31 provincial-level administrative divisions in mainland China during 2005-2020 were analyzed using quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag nonlinear models. Meteorological variables were examined al

Ephedra przewalskii is a key species in arid regions recognized for its remarkable ecological, economic, and medicinal importance. However, climate change and anthropogenic activities have severely threatened their survival, reduced genetic diversity, and increased the risk of extinction. Nonclimatic variables lack systematic integration in current modeling frameworks, and intraspecific genetic variation is similarly poorly explored. This study assessed the vulnerability and adaptive capacity of E. przewalskii populations by applying ensemble species distribution models (ESDMs) and Climate-Nic

The incidence of human and canine leishmaniasis in Europe is increasing and is a key indicator in the Lancet Countdown report on health and climate change 2024. While the potential distribution of the disease on a continental scale has been assessed under climate change scenarios, local analyses of vector species distribution are crucial for effective prevention strategies. Italy is endemic for Leishmania infantum, and expansions in the latitudinal and altitudinal distribution of canine cases and vector species have been recorded. This study evaluated the potential distribution of six phleboto

Urban environments contribute substantially to the rising burden of cardiometabolic diseases worldwide. Cities are complex adaptive systems that continually exchange resources, shaping exposures relevant to human health such as air pollution, noise, and chemical exposures. In addition, urban infrastructure and provisioning systems influence multiple domains of health risk, including behaviors, psychological stress, pollution, and nutrition through various pathways (eg, physical inactivity, air pollution, noise, heat stress, food systems, the availability of green space, and contaminant exposur

Dactylorhiza hatagirea is a terrestrial orchid listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and classified as threatened by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is endemic to the Hindu-Kush Himalayan region, distributed from Pakistan to China. The main threat to its existence is climate change and the associated change in the distribution of its suitable habitats to higher altitudes due to increasing temperature. It is therefore necessary to determine the habitats that are suitable for its survival and

Climate-related changes and disasters may disrupt relationships and ties. Drawing on 10 years of data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) surveys, we examine the effects of climate-related disasters on loneliness, social support, social functioning, and social contacts with friends and family. By matching respondents who experienced a disaster with a control cohort of similar characteristics before the event, we find being exposed to a climate-related disaster is associated with an increase in loneliness and a decrease in social functioning the year of the event

An understanding of the seasonality of infections informs public health strategies and assists clinicians in their management of patients with undifferentiated illness. The seasonality of infections is driven by a variety of environmental and human factors; however, the role of individual climatic factors has garnered much attention. This study utilises Poisson regression models to assess the seasonality of six important infections in tropical Australia and their association with climatic factors and severe weather events over a 21-year period. Melioidosis and leptospirosis showed marked wet s

BACKGROUND: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is prioritized as an emerging tick-borne disease, posing a continuing threat to human populations. Existing evidence has shown that tick-to-human transmission is the primary route of human infection. However, this insight has not been consistently incorporated into studies examining the ecological dependence of vectored disease dynamics.
METHODS: We employ an eco-epidemiological model to assess tick abundance in response to the natural environment and its contribution to SFTS transmission. Our statistical model, which integrates d

This paper describes spatial distribution of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and determines its correlation with climatic factors in an endemic focus in northern and central Tunisia. Data on VL cases in children under five years of age were obtained by consulting medical reports from all Tunisian Pediatric Departments (TPD) during 2006-2016. Three key climatic factors, namely precipitation, continentality index and pluviometric coefficient of Emberger were used as predictor variables to model the VL geographical distribution. Data handling and statistical analysis were performed using R and Arcvie

We utilize the social intuitionist approach to moral judgment and moral disengagement theory to understand why and when employees sabotage customers. We contend that when customers mistreat employees (i.e., customer mistreatment), employees experience intuitive emotional reactions in the form of hostility, which automatically activates devaluation of targets, a specific facet of moral disengagement. In turn, employees become unencumbered by moral self-regulation and sabotage customers who mistreat them (i.e., customer-directed sabotage). We further argue that our serially mediated model is mod

It is valuable to study the spatiotemporal pattern of Japanese encephalitis (JE) and its association with the contextual risk factors in southwest China, which is the most endemic area in China. Using data from 2004 to 2009, we applied GISmapping and spatial autocorrelation analysis to analyze reported incidence data of JE in 438 counties in southwest China, finding that JE cases were not randomly distributed, and a Bayesian hierarchical spatiotemporal model identified the east part of southwest China as a high risk area. Meanwhile, the Bayesian hierarchical spatial model in 2006 demonstrated

Including local populations in energy transition planning can increase its legitimacy, socio-political feasibility, and, in turn, climate mitigation efficacy. Comprehensive stakeholder involvement in participatory modeling facilitates learning; however, the choice of options and scenarios in the model can be opaque to participants. Here, we present a framework in which stakeholders engage with near-optimal modeling results holistically and showcase our methodology in a case study of the remote Arctic settlement of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Participants choose across a continuum of modeling-based

Individuals are often exposed to multiple climate factors simultaneously, but there is limited research on the combined effects of these factors on mental health. This study aims to explore the simultaneous impact of temperature, humidity, and the number of sunny days on mental health, as well as the potential social and behavioral mechanisms underlying these associations. There were 11,954 university students selected through a multistage survey sampling process. The multilevel logistic regression models showed that temperature and sunny days were significantly associated with probable mental
