Sympatric European white oaks species display contrasting epigenetic response to soil water availability.

In the context of climate change plants have to cope with adverse conditions, among which water scarcity is a major threat for their survival. They have developed diverse regulatory processes to face drought that may differ depending on their ecological niche. The two sympatric oaks species (Quercus robur L. and Quercus petraea (Matt.). Liebl) have different levels of drought tolerance. We have investigated their strategies to face drought stress by analysing the transcriptome, small RNAome and methylome dynamics of young plants grown under control and drought stress conditions. Data indicate

Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus as a plant growth-promoting endophyte: mechanistic insights and translational prospects for sustainable agriculture.

With the growing interest in sustainable agriculture, there has been a surge in exploration of multitrophic interactions between plants and microbes that can help plants adapt to changing environments and enhance their resilience to climate changes. One such beneficial microbe is Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, an aerobic, nitrogen-fixing endophyte currently being studied because of its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen within plant tissues under aerobic conditions. This endophyte also promotes plant growth through processes like phytohormone production, nutrient solubilization, and improv

Water deficit induced by polyethylene glycol leads to the depletion of phenolic compounds but did not alter lignification in roots of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris).

Global climate change is accompanied by an increase in the frequency and severity of droughts, which negatively impact plant growth. One of the protective mechanisms that allows plants to withstand the negative drought effects is the lignification of vascular and dermal tissues, which prevents water loss. Despite some progress in research on lignification in model and crop plants, the characteristics of lignin accumulation in conifers need further investigation. In this study, we examined the adaptation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings to water deficit at weak (-0.15 MPa) and strong

Bridging the Political Divide: Meta-Humanization and Moral Emotions Shape Partisan Reconciliation.

In an era of deepening political polarization, understanding how partisans believe they are perceived by ideological opponents is critical for explaining both hostility and conciliation. Across five studies (N = 1,541) conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, we examine how meta-humanization, perceiving that one's political ingroup is seen as fully human by the outgroup, shapes moral emotional responses and downstream intergroup attitudes. Specifically, we test anger, disgust, and empathy as parallel mediators linking meta-humanization to affective polarization, negotiat

Advances in Ceramic-Carbonate Dual-Phase Membrane Reactors for Direct CO2 Separation and Utilization.

Excessive (carbon dioxide) CO2 emissions are a primary factor contributing to climate change. As one of the crucial technologies for alleviating CO2 emissions, carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology has attracted considerable global attention. Technologies for capturing CO2 in extreme circumstances are indispensable for regulating CO2 levels in industrial processes. The unique separation characteristics of the ceramic-carbonate dual-phase (CCDP) membranes are increasingly employed for CO2 separation at high temperatures due to their outstanding chemical, thermal durability, and mechan

Microbial Life History Mediates the Drought-Induced Decrease in Wood Decomposition in Subtropical Forests.

Progressive intensification of drought regimes worldwide threatens wood decomposition - a critical biogeochemical process in forest carbon cycling. However, the interactions between microbial strategies, wood traits and microclimate in regulating wood decomposition remain poorly understood under drought conditions. In a throughfall exclusion experiment (control 35% and 70% rainfall reduction) across 12 tree species, we found that drought-induced reductions in wood CO2 efflux rates were primarily driven by wood traits (density and carbon reduction) and shifts in fungal K/r-strategies. Coarse wo

Seasonal variations in greenhouse gas production in coastal sandy sediments.

Understanding the greenhouse gas (GHG) production rates and ecological effects of sandy coastal sediments is critical for refining global carbon cycle assessments. Despite their extensive distribution and potential role in climate regulation, sandy sediments remain understudied compared to muddy counterparts, particularly regarding seasonal dynamics and redox-controlled biogeochemical processes. This study investigates seasonal GHG dynamics in sandy coastal sediments of the Guangdong Province, China. Results revealed that temperature as the primary seasonal driver, directly regulating microbia

Molecular insights into the elevator-type mechanism of the cyanobacterial bicarbonate transporter BicA.

Cyanobacteria are responsible for up to 80% of aquatic carbon dioxide fixation and have evolved a specialized carbon concentrating mechanism to increase photosynthetic yield. As such, cyanobacteria are attractive targets for synthetic biology and engineering approaches to address the demands of global energy security, food production, and climate change for an increasing world's population. The bicarbonate transporter BicA is a sodium-dependent, low-affinity, high-flux bicarbonate symporter expressed in the plasma membrane of cyanobacteria. Despite extensive biochemical characterization of Bic

Integrated bioprocess for carbon dioxide sequestration and methanol production.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) poses a significant threat, contributing to global warming and climate change. This study focused on isolating efficient CO2-reducing methanogens and methanotrophs for converting methane into methanol. Samples from diverse regions in India were collected and processed, yielding 82 methanogenic and 48 methylotrophic isolates. Methanogenic isolate M11 produced a higher amount of methane, reaching 2.9 mol L-1 on the sixth day of incubation at 35 °C, pH 7.0, and CO2:H2 (80:20) as feeding rates. Under optimized conditions, isolate M11 effectively converted 8.3 mol CO2 to 7.9 mo

No evidence of predicted phenotypic changes after hurricane disturbance in a shade-specialist Caribbean anole.

Extreme climatic events (ECEs) such as hurricanes have been hypothesized to be a major driving force of natural selection. Recent studies argue that, following strong hurricane disturbance, Anolis lizards in the Caribbean undergo selection for traits such as longer forelimbs or smaller body sizes that improve their clinging ability to their substrates increasing their chances of surviving hurricane wind gusts. Some authors challenge the generalization of this hypothesis arguing that other mechanisms may explain these phenotypic changes or that they may not necessarily be generalizable across s

Combined effects of urban pollution and hydrological stress on ecosystem functions of Mediterranean streams.

Urban pollution and hydrological stress are common stressors of stream ecosystems, but their combined effects on ecosystem functioning are still unclear. We measured a set of functional processes and accompanying environmental variables in locations upstream and downstream of urban sewage inputs in 13 streams covering a wide range of water pollution levels and hydrological variability. Sewage inputs seriously impaired stream chemical characteristics and led to complex effects on ecosystem functioning. Biofilm biomass accrual, whole-reach nutrient uptake and metabolism (ecosystem respiration) w

Preparing plants for improved cold tolerance by priming.

Cold is a major stressor, which limits plant growth and development in many parts of the world, especially in the temperate climate zones. A large number of experimental studies has demonstrated that not only acclimation and entrainment but also the experience of single short stress events of various abiotic or biotic kinds (priming stress) can improve the tolerance of plants to chilling temperatures. This process, called priming, depends on a stress "memory". It does not change cold sensitivity per se but beneficially modifies the response to cold and can last for days, months, or even longer

Climatic Influences on Cryptococcus gattii [corrected] Populations, Vancouver Island, Canada, 2002-2004.

Vancouver Island, Canada, reports the world's highest incidence of Cryptococcus gattii infection among humans and animals. To identify key biophysical factors modulating environmental concentrations, we evaluated monthly concentrations of C. gatti in air, soil, and trees over a 3-year period. The 2 study datasets were repeatedly measured plots and newly sampled plots. We used hierarchical generalized linear and mixed effect models to determine associations. Climate systematically influenced C. gattii concentrations in all environmental media tested; in soil and on trees, concentrations decreas

The future of oats in the food and health continuum.

A large body of clinical evidence suggests that the consumption of 3 g or more per d of β-glucan from oats or barley, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of CHD. The unique chemical and physical properties of oats and physiological responses to oat consumption contribute to their demonstrated health benefits; other health attributes are still under evaluation. Many of these benefits, such as those associated with a reduced risk of CVD, are codified in health claims by several regulatory agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration in the USA and th

[Development and current status of atmospheric pollution].

INTRODUCTION: Air quality is a public health issue and this article includes a reminder of the related causes and issues and a description of the monitoring of ambient air quality in France. It also provides a review of major developments in recent years of the pollutants measured. BACKGROUND: Emissions of major air pollutants have declined significantly since the 1970s, and this is reflected in an overall improvement in the quality of ambient air. Nevertheless, various forms of air pollution remain a concern (in the case of photochemical pollution) and health data show that air pollution is

[Vocational aptitude and inclination--aspects of their assessment and evaluation in rehabilitation].

The task of appraising aptitudes and inclinations accompanies a rehabilitee and the rehabilitation workers involved for the entire duration of an occupationally-focussed rehabilitation measure. Explicitly so in vocational guidance measures, it aims at obtaining a sound basis for decision-making in view of vocational reorientation. Responsibility for this decision in the last analysis rests with the rehabilitee himself, an aspect that abolishes any strict separation of aptitude and inclination in predicting outcome in the context of occupational perspectives. Being the decision-making agent, th
