Social, psychological, and cultural dimensions of cardiovascular health among Hispanic/Latino adults: A narrative review of findings from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

OBJECTIVES: The landmark Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) enrolled N = 16,415 Hispanic/Latino adults (2008-2011) who have been followed for 12-16 years, through 2024. HCHS/SOL identified high rates of cardiovascular risk factors in the target population, with significant variability by Hispanic/Latino heritage (Central American, Cuban, Dominican, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and South American). In the current study, we reviewed the evidence from HCHS/SOL concerning the social, psychological, and cultural dimensions of cardiovascular health (CVH). METHOD: Through a concep

Examining associations among positive and negative schizotypy, feedback-related learning, and attentional set switching.

Positive schizotypy is a dimension of traits ranging from odd beliefs and experiences in the general population to the positive psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia (i.e., delusions and hallucinations), with high levels of positive schizotypy found in some personality disorders. Psychosis is related to increased dorsal striatal dopamine, suggesting that positive schizotypy might also reflect alterations in dorsal striatal functioning. The dorsal striatum is involved in reinforcement learning and cognitive flexibility. The current research examined whether positive schizotypy is related to impai

Effectiveness and safety of pharmacologic agents for postoperative delirium: a narrative review.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common and distressing neuropsychiatric complication following major surgery, linked to prolonged hospitalization, increased mortality, and long-term cognitive decline. Despite its widespread clinical use, evidence supporting pharmacologic treatments for established POD remains limited and inconsistent. Recent large-scale studies and clinical guidelines published between 2018 and 2025 reveal that neither traditional antipsychotics like haloperidol nor second-generation atypical antipsychotics like quetiapine, olanzapine, and risperidone significantly improve d

A whole-of-society approach to depression prevention during the global pandemic: Preliminary data from three large-scale trials.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the prevalence of depressive disorders among youth, there is no health system model to address the prevention of these disorders. METHOD: With the goal of creating effective, tolerable, and scalable interventions for the prevention of adolescent depression, we have fielded three randomized clinical trials, centered in health care delivery organizations that use a whole-of-society approach: (a) Path 2 Purpose (N = 664), comparing the Competent Adulthood Transition with Cognitive Behavioral, Humanistic, and Interpersonal Training (CATCH-IT; B. W. Van Voorhees et al., 2015), g

Cognitive disengagement syndrome: A construct at the crossroads.

Initially described in the mid-1980s, cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS; previously termed sluggish cognitive tempo) is a set of symptoms comprising excessive daydreaming, mental confusion, and hypoactivity that is distinct from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other psychopathology dimensions and independently associated with functional outcomes. This article provides a broad overview of the history of the CDS construct, its terminology, and the current state of the science. Although there has been a marked upsurge in research on CDS, including psychometrically rigorous assess

Periodic tapping mechanisms of skill learning in a fast-paced video game.

Timing plays a critical role when building up motor skill. In this study, we investigated and simulated human skill learning in a simplified variant of the Space Fortress video game named Auto Orbit with a strong timing component. Our principal aim was to test whether a computational model designed to simulate keypress actions repeated at rates slower than 500 ms (>500 ms) could also simulate human learning with repeated keypress actions taking place at very fast rates (≤500 ms). The main finding was that increasing speed stress forced human participants to qualitatively switch their behavior

Measurement invariance of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) across race/ethnicity and sex in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study.

There are numerous studies examining differences in the experience of disorders and symptoms of psychopathology in adolescents across racial or ethnic groups and sex. Though there is substantial research exploring potential factors that may influence these differences, few studies have considered the potential contribution of measurement properties to these differences. Therefore, this study examined whether there are differences across racial or ethnic groups and sex in the measurement of psychopathology, assessed in mother-reported behavior of 9-11 year old youth from the Adolescent Brain Co

Top-down and bottom-up contributions to memory performance in OCD: A multilevel meta-analysis with clinical implications.

Despite extensive coverage of a relationship between memory performance and executive function in the obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) literature, the relative contributions of specific aspects of executive control have remained elusive. We, therefore, extend our previous multilevel meta-analysis (Persson et al., 2021), where demand on executive function was the most significant determinant of memory deficits in OCD, and provide a finer-grained analysis of executive control via a segregation into top-down (attentional control, maintenance and updating, planning) and bottom-up (perceptual in

Objective and subjective sleep patterns and biomarkers of stress among women with a history of sexual abuse in childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) and sleep disturbance into adulthood. The latter is thought to emerge from dysregulation in biobehavioral systems, including nighttime hyperarousal; however, studies investigating specific mechanisms to explain these long-term sleep problems are limited. The present study examined presleep arousal, fear of sleep, and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) as putative mediators between PTSS and sleep disturbance in women with a history of CSA. METHOD: N = 64 cis-gendered women with a self-reported h

Preventing and treating delirium in clinical settings for older adults.

Delirium is a serious consequence of many acute or worsening chronic medical conditions, a side effect of medications, and a precipitant of worsening functional and cognitive status in older adults. It is a syndrome characterized by fluctuations in cognition and impaired attention that develops over a short period of time in response to an underlying medical condition, a substance (prescribed, over the counter, or recreational), or substance withdrawal and can be multi-factorial. We present a narrative review of the literature on nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic approaches to prevention and

Testing the nightmare cognitive arousal processing model.

OBJECTIVE: Posttrauma nightmares are recurring nightmares that begin after a traumatic experience. Research has only recently begun to identify variables that predict posttrauma nightmare occurrences. Research has identified presleep arousal-cognitive (PSA-C) and presleep arousal physiological (PSA-PHYS), sleep onset latency (SOL), and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) as potential predictors of posttrauma nightmares. However, previous research includes methodological limitations, such as a lack of physiological measures and a homogeneous sample. To replicate previous findings and increase gene

Momentary assessment of aberrant salience, anomalous self-experiences, and psychotic-like experiences.

To improve understanding of emerging psychosis, researchers have identified potential precursory mechanisms that may momentarily precede psychotic-like experiences, including aberrant salience and anomalous self-experiences. Aberrant salience is the misattribution of significance to neutral stimuli and may be linked to atypical dopamine transmission. Anomalous self-experiences include changes in the experience of the self, which may alter top-down cognitive processes. The present study extends previous research on these phenomena by examining the momentary dynamics of aberrant salience, anomal

Text message safety behavior reduction for social anxiety: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive models of social anxiety disorder propose that maladaptive safety behaviors (SBs; i.e., behaviors intended to avoid, prevent, or manage threat) play an important maintaining role in the disorder. Though targeting these behaviors for elimination is one component of contemporary cognitive-behavioral therapies for social anxiety, it has rarely been examined as a specific treatment strategy, and, to our knowledge, it has not yet been examined in isolation as an intervention for social anxiety. The current study evaluated an SB reduction intervention for social anxiety that con

Acceptability of cognitive anxiety sensitivity treatment among veterans with mTBI.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a transdiagnostic risk factor for persistent physical and psychological symptoms relevant to veterans, such as postconcussive symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The Cognitive Anxiety Sensitivity Treatment (CAST) computerized intervention has been shown to reduce AS but has not been widely used among veterans. The purpose of this study was to assess the acceptability and feasibility of CAST among veterans with elevated AS and mTBI eligible to receive Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care. DESIGN: Twenty-two veterans with mTBI, elev

ANMCO/SIC/SICI-GISE/SICCH Executive Summary of Consensus Document on Risk Stratification in elderly patients with aortic stenosis before surgery or transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Aortic stenosis is one of the most frequent valvular diseases in developed countries, and its impact on public health resources and assistance is increasing. A substantial proportion of elderly people with severe aortic stenosis is not eligible to surgery because of the advanced age, frailty, and multiple co-morbidities. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) enables the treatment of very elderly patients at high or prohibitive surgical risk considered ineligible for surgery and with an acceptable life expectancy. However, a significant percentage of patients die or show no improvement
