Diagnostic and therapy of an early-stage primary leiomyosarcoma of the sigmoid colon: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Primary leiomyosarcoma of the colon is a very rare tumor entity. Because of unspecific findings, diagnostic can be challenging. Most cases are diagnosed in advanced stages with poor overall survival. Unclear histological findings of smooth muscle cell tissue in colon biopsies together with a tumor of the colon wall in computed tomography (CT) imaging should lead to the differential diagnosis of primary colonic leiomyosarcoma and further diagnostic procedures. ABSTRACT: Primary colonic leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare tumor entity arising from smooth muscle cells in th

[A Case of Bladder Preservation by Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy for Sigmoid Colon Cancer with Bladder Invasion].

The patient was a 76-year-old female who presented with pain during urination and turbid urine(containing fecal matter). She was referred to our urology department from a local clinic. Imaging findings indicated sigmoid colon cancer with bladder invasion. Total colonoscopy revealed a circumferential advanced sigmoid colon cancer. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)showed wail thickening of the sigmoid colon wall, with unclear demarcation from the bladder. The preoperative diagnosis was cT4b(bladder), N1b, M0, cStage Ⅲc. After construction of a colostomy, 4 course of capecitabin

Recurrent Colonic Perforation in Geriatric Patients with Sigmoid Colostomy: Two Case Reports.

Recurrent colonic perforation in patients already having colostomy is extremely rare and only a few cases had been reported. Herein, we report 2 cases of recurrent colonic perforation at the proximal part of the colostomy in geriatric patients resulting from different causes, which might be caused by stercoral perforation and recurrent colonic ischemia, respectively. Based on our experience, surgeons should consider correcting chronic constipation even in patients who already have a colostomy. Additionally, transverse colostomy should be considered as a surgical treatment in patients with sigm

A Rare Case of Complete Perforation of Endometrial Tissue Through the Mucosa of the Sigmoid Colon.

Endometriosis is a disease that causes endometrial tissues to proliferate outside of the uterus. The condition is often attributed to estrogen imbalance and can lead to severe inflammation and bleeding, where it is believed that 10% of female patients experience this illness. Endometrial growth can occur in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, stomach, and gastrointestinal tract. Twelve percent of endometriosis cases can be seen in the intestines, with the rectosigmoid colon accounting for 72% of these cases. Patients with intestinal endometriosis may present with moderate symptoms, such as constipat

[A Case of Double Cancer of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Rectum and Adenocarcinoma of the Sigmoid Colon].

A 72-year-old male was transported to our hospital with complaints of heart palpitations and dyspnea since a month earlier and was immobile. Blood examination showed severe anemia, and colonoscopy revealed circumferential tumors in the rectum and the sigmoid colon. Histopathologic examination revealed the tumors as squamous cell carcinoma of the rectum and adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon. Therefore, they were diagnosed as double colorectal cancers. CT and MRI showed that rectal cancer invaded the seminal vesicles and the prostate; therefore, the patient underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiother

Repair of a giant inguinoscrotal hernia with herniation of the ileum and sigmoid colon: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Giant inguinoscrotal hernias are huge inguinal hernias that extend below the midpoint of the inner thigh in the standing posture. Giant inguinoscrotal hernias are rare in developed countries because of their better medical resources and early treatment. However, they can develop in patients who refuse surgery or ignore their condition. Intervention is inevitable because strangulation and organ perforation can occur, leading to peritonitis and sepsis. Common surgical approaches include open abdominal and inguinal approaches or a combination of both. CASE SUMMARY: We present the cas

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Sigmoid Colon in an Infant: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) infrequently involves the sigmoid colon, and has not previously been described in an infant sigmoid colon. An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor arose from the sigmoid colon of an 11-month-old boy, confirmed by anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), smooth muscle actin (SMA) and desmin immunohistochemical staining. The patient recovered well after complete resection of the tumor. Sigmoid IMT can occur in infancy. This eighth case is the youngest so far. The child did well after surgical resection.

A giant hemangioma of the sigmoid colon as a cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in a young man.

Although hemangiomas are among the rarest causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding, they should be considered in young adults with recurrent, painless gastrointestinal bleeding. We present a case report of a 37-year-old man with a 2-month history of intermittent rectal bleeding who had a single large hemangioma in the sigmoid colon, successfully treated with elective laparoscopic sigmoid resection.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder concomitant with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder is rare and aggressive, its diagnosis is based on pathologic and immunohistochemical examination, currently there is no standard treatment for this tumor. Its concomitant occurrence with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon is exceptional. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a rare case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder that occurred concomitantly with sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma was established postoperatively by pathological and immunohistochemical exami

Primary Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma Presenting with Hematochezia due to the Invading Tumor in the Sigmoid Colon.

Primary appendiceal tumors are rare malignancies; some cases have been described to invade other organs, and this represents a very rare clinical condition. We report a case of appendiceal adenocarcinoma invading the sigmoid colon and a review of similar cases. A 69-year-old woman with complaints of hematochezia was admitted to the hospital. Colonoscopy revealed a tumor in the sigmoid colon, which was a well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. A computed tomography scan showed an appendiceal mass that involved the sigmoid colon, suggesting an appendiceal cancer invading the sigmoid colon. I

Laparoscopic repair of an irreducible femoral hernia containing an epiploic appendage of the sigmoid colon.

Here we present the first report of laparoscopic repair of an irreducible femoral hernia containing an epiploic appendage of the sigmoid colon. A 73-year-old woman presented with a 1-week history of a left groin mass below the inguinal ligament with no abdominal symptoms. Abdominal CT demonstrated a 21 × 18-mm oval-shaped, fat-dense structure in the left groin area. The hernia contents were considered potentially associated with the omentum; thus, a left irreducible femoral hernia was diagnosed. Elective laparoscopic surgery revealed an irreducible femoral hernia containing an epiploic appenda

Neonatal Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor of the Sigmoid Colon: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

ABSTACTBackground: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the digestive tract. They are believed to originate from the interstitial cells of Cajal or their precursors. Case Report: A 10-day-old boy presented with intestinal obstruction. He was operated upon and a mass was found at the sigmoid colon, which was resected and divided colostomy was performed. The diagnosis of neonatal GIST was confirmed by histologic and immunohistochemical studies. Conclusion: This is the ninth case of neonatal GIST that arose from the intestine and the first reported t

Transverse colonic volvulus after resection of sigmoid volvulus: Presentation of a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Colonic volvulus is the third leading cause of colonic obstruction in the world following colorectal cancer and complicated sigmoid diverticulitis. Transverse colon is the rarest among other colonic volvulus. Moreover synchronous/metachronous transverse colonic volvulus is extremely rare condition with only few case reported in the literature, we hereby report this case of metachronous transverse colonic volvulus years after sigmoidectomy for sigmoid volvulus CASE PRESENTATION: A case of transverse colon volvulus in elderly male with history of chronic constipation and a previous

Waardenburg syndrome with isolated deficiency of myenteric ganglion cells at the sigmoid colon and rectum.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) has the characteristic clinical features caused by the embryologic abnormality of neural crest cells. WS patients sometimes suffer from functional intestinal obstruction. When it is Hirschsprung disease (HD), the WS is diagnosed as type 4 WS. We report a case of WS which did not have myenteric ganglion cells in the sigmoid colon and rectum. Whether to diagnosis this case as type 1 or 4 WS is controversial. Moreover, this is the third report which has peristalsis failure caused by abnormal myenteric plexus. In all three cases, the eosinophils had aggregated in the myen

A case of multiple synchronous quadruple cancers of the stomach, sigmoid colon, rectum, and pancreas.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple primary neoplasms are relatively rare, but their incidence has increased because of aging and improvements in diagnostic imaging. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 67-year-old man presented with epigastric pain. On upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, an ulcer was seen at the gastric angle, and biopsy showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (AC). Colonoscopy demonstrated a 15-mm lesion in the sigmoid colon and a submucosal lesion in the lower rectum. The biopsy showed well differentiated AC and neuroendocrine tumor (NET). In addition, abdominal CT and MRI showed a 14-mm nodu

Aggressive large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the sigmoid colon in a patient with ulcerative colitis.

Colonic inflammation seen in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) predisposes to the development of colorectal adenocarcinoma. In contrast, colorectal neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) have rarely been reported in the setting of IBD, and no definitive relationship between these tumours and IBD has been established. Dysplasia from chronic inflammation leading to neuroendocrine cell differentiation may be responsible for NEC development, though this finding has not been seen consistently. We present a case of large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the sigmoid colon in a 65-year-old woman with long-st
