Co-designing adult weight management services: a qualitative study exploring barriers, facilitators, and considerations for future commissioning.

BACKGROUND: Weight management services have not always benefitted everyone equally. People who live in more deprived areas, racially minoritised communities, those with complex additional needs (e.g., a physical or mental disability), and men are less likely to take part in weight management services. This can subsequently widen health inequalities. One way to counter this is to co-design services with under-served groups to better meet their needs. Using a case study approach, we explored how co-designed adult weight management services were developed, the barriers and facilitators to co-desi

Including expectant fathers in antenatal education programmes in Istanbul, Turkey.

In this article we present the results of three studies investigating methods for including men in antenatal education in Istanbul, Turkey. Participants were first-time expectant parents living in low and middle-income areas. After a formative study on the roles of various family members in health during the period surrounding a first birth, an antenatal-clinic-based education programme for women and for couples was carried out as a randomised, controlled study. Based on the results, separate community-based antenatal education programmes for expectant mothers and expectant fathers were tested

Strengthening mental health care in Somalia through artificial intelligence: opportunities, challenges, and a roadmap for implementation.

Mental health needs in Somalia are substantial, yet access to timely, high-quality care remains constrained by workforce shortages, limited infrastructure and financing, fragmented services, weak health information systems, and persistent sociocultural barriers. Artificial intelligence (AI) may complement mental health system strengthening in this fragile and resource-constrained setting. This Perspective examines potential applications of AI across Somalia's mental health system and considers the associated implementation, ethical, governance, and equity challenges. Potential applications inc

A multicomponent behavior change intervention to promote walking in adults after traumatic brain injury: A Pilot Randomized Control Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior is highly prevalent following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and compounds existing risks for cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and affective disorders. The cognitive and behavioral sequelae of TBI, including impaired decision-making, blunted reward processing, and cognitive fatigue, create particular barriers to adopting and maintaining an active lifestyle. Effective behavior change interventions targeting physical activity in community-dwelling TBI survivors remain scarce. Here, we evaluated the feasibility, compliance, and preliminary efficacy of a 12-week remo

Patient-based evidence for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis prognostic health communication: "the clock is ticking…how long do I have?".

Objectives: Prognostic health communication is a critical challenge for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) health-care professions, however patient-based evidence for best practice remains limited. We investigated how the experiences of ALS patients and caregivers can inform prognostic communication and whether patient-based evidence supports clinical use of predictive tools. Methods: Data were drawn from ALS Talk, an asynchronous, online focus group study. Patients and family caregivers were recruited from across Canada. Seven groups interacted in a threaded web-forum structure. Sixty-four p

Adapting a Youth Sexual Violence Prevention Logic Model and Evaluation to Asian American and Pacific Islander Youth in Iowa: a Case Study.

Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) youth report a high prevalence rate of youth violence. Logic models that guide violence prevention programming are often not culturally specific and may not address the unique structural/social drivers of youth violence in minoritized communities. Monsoon has received Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) funding from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) since 2007 through a competitive application process. The specific aim of Monsoon's Youth Sexual Violence Prevention Program (YVPP) is to "prevent gender-based violence by educat

Protecting Public Health With Clean Transportation in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is an increasingly predominant source of air pollution in North Carolina (NC). Several executive orders have sought to address TRAP and prevent potential health effects from this source of exposure. In January 2022, NC Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order 246 (EO 246), which directed the North Carolina Department of Transportation to develop the North Carolina Clean Transportation Plan with considerations for environmental justice (EJ) and equity, in addition to establishing new goals for reduction of greenhouse gases in North Carolina and

The Southern Rural Access Program and Alabama's Rural Health Leaders Pipeline: a partnership to develop needed minority health care professionals.

Rural Health Leaders Pipeline programs are intended to increase the number of youth interested in and pursuing health professions in rural communities. This paper presents 2 complementary approaches to Rural Health Leaders Pipeline programs. Two different organizations in Alabama recruit students from 18 specified counties. One organization is a rural, community-based program with college freshmen and upperclassmen from rural communities. Students shadow health professionals for 6 weeks, attend classes, visit medical schools, complete and present health projects, and receive support from onlin

Optometry in the multidisciplinary health care setting.

A variety of health care delivery settings and models have been established in the 1980s. The multidisciplinary setting encourages comanagement and continuity of care, provides convenient consultation and communication, and is cost effective. It stimulates learning, helps to consolidate management strategies, and results in improved quality of care. Therefore, the patient and the provider both benefit from this environment. In 1978, the problem-oriented record keeping system (PORS) was implemented in the eye care service of a Boston neighborhood multidisciplinary health center. It facilitated

Teaching health disparities on the road: An experiential educational intervention for doctor of nursing practice students.

AIM: This analysis was conducted to understand the nuanced and underlying benefits and challenges of an experiential educational intervention for DNP students learning how neighborhoods and health disparities may be related. BACKGROUND: Poor social and environmental conditions in many low-income urban neighborhoods are linked to deleterious health outcomes. Many of the structural and political influences are unknown to health providers, which can inhibit their understanding of the social effects on health. One aspect of a new DNP social determinants of health curriculum is a guided community

The public health impacts of supervised injection sites in Canada: Moving beyond social acceptability and impacts on crime.

Canada has been a pioneer in adopting a harm reduction approach to address risks associated with drug use for people who inject drugs. Today, Canada is home to 39 supervised injection sites spread throughout the country. The scientific literature demonstrates, unequivocally, that these sites have numerous health benefits for people who inject drugs, namely by decreasing risks of blood-borne diseases, overdose, and mortality. Yet, a lack of clear guidelines on optimal locations for the implementation of such sites and NIMBYISM ("Not In My Back Yard") have been stumbling blocks for planned and o

Evaluating the PM ACTIVAS Nurse-Led Preventive Care Model for Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Falls among community-dwelling older adults are a major public health challenge and a leading cause of functional decline. Although multifactorial fall prevention strategies are recommended, evidence on comprehensive nurse-led preventive care models in primary health care remains limited. This study evaluated the clinical effects of the PM ACTIVAS nurse-led preventive care model among community-dwelling older adults in routine primary health care. METHODS: This article reports the quantitative component of a broader mixed-methods research programme. A two-arm randomized

Condom availability programs in Massachusetts high schools: relationships with condom use and sexual behavior.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed relationships between condom availability programs accompanied by community discussion and involvement and adolescent sexual practices. METHODS: Sexual practice and condom use differences were assessed in a representative sample of 4166 adolescents enrolled in high schools with and without condom availability programs. RESULTS: Adolescents in schools where condoms were available were more likely to receive condom use instruction and less likely to report lifetime or recent sexual intercourse. Sexually active adolescents in those schools were twice as likely to
