In search of the missing linkages: continuity of care in U.S. jails.

Persons with symptoms of acute mental illnesses present problems for jail management. Jails have a constitutional duty to provide psychiatric services to all persons in need of such care. However, mental health resources are frequently insufficient to meet the many needs of persons with mental illnesses in jails, and are often inaccessible to those released to the community. This study focuses on the experiences of a cohort of detainees (n = 379) with mental illnesses who have been incarcerated in seven U.S. jails. Data gathered include criminal and demographic characteristics, mental health s

Describing the characteristics, treatment pathways, outcomes, and costs of people with persistent noncancer pain managed by community pain clinics and generating an indicative estimate of cost-effectiveness: feasibility study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) and fibromyalgia (FM), also known as chronic widespread pain (CWP), are highly prevalent chronic painful conditions that have substantial impact on patients, health care systems, and society. Diagnosis is complex and management strategies are associated with various levels of evidence for effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. Multidisciplinary pain services have been shown to be effective in some settings and therefore are recommended by clinical practice guidelines as a rational treatment option to manage these patients. Knowing that these services are resource

Home environmental change for child injury prevention in Nepal: A qualitative study.

In Nepal, unintentional home injury is a leading reason for death and disability among pre-school children. However, there is a lack of evidence to inform culturally appropriate interventions to reduce home injuries. This study explored the potential for home environmental change at a community level to prevent unintentional home injury in children and identified the barriers to, and facilitators of, such changes. Focus groups were conducted in the Nepali language with mothers, fathers, teachers, school students and community health volunteers in rural areas of Makwanpur district in Nepal. The

An Investigation of Early Syphilis Among Men Who have Sex with Men: Alaska, 2018: Findings from a 2018 Rapid Ethnographic Assessment.

The state of Alaska had a sharp increase in cases of primary and secondary syphilis among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in 2018, centered in Anchorage. A rapid ethnographic assessment was conducted in October 2018 to examine contextual factors contributing to local increases in syphilis. The assessment team conducted qualitative interviews with 64 (N=49 interviews) key informants in Anchorage and Matanuska-Susitna Valley identified through the STD/HIV program at the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Public Health (ADPH):  ADPH staff (n =

The Impact of Community Engagement on Health, Social, and Utilization Outcomes in Depressed, Impoverished Populations: Secondary Findings from a Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in depression care exist among the poor. Community Partners in Care (CPIC) compared a community coalition model with technical assistance to improve depression services in under-resourced communities. We examine effects on health, social, and utilization outcomes among the poor and, non-poor depressed, and poor subgroups. METHODS: This study analyzed clients living above (n = 268) and below (n = 750) the federal-poverty level and, among the poor, 3 nonoverlapping subgroups: justice-involved (n = 158), homeless and not justice-involved (n = 298), and other poor (n = 294

The development of a culturally appropriate school based intervention for Australian Aboriginal children living in remote communities: A formative evaluation of the Alert Program® intervention.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Although previous research has demonstrated the benefits of targeting self-regulation in non-Aboriginal children, it is unclear whether such programs would be effective for Aboriginal children attending school in remote communities. Some of these children have been diagnosed with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) impairing their ability to self-regulate. The aim of this article is to describe a three phase formative process to develop and pilot a curriculum version of the Alert Program® , a promising intervention for improving self-regulation that could be used in remote

How research ethics' protections can contribute to public policy: the case of community treatment orders.

Though community treatment orders (CTOs) were first used in 1986 in Australia, debate about their clinical and ethical merits continues even today. For some, the benefits of reduced frequency and duration of involuntary hospitalizations are believed to adequately outweigh the harms of restricted liberties in community living. For others, however, such benefits are believed to be achievable by simply arranging integrated, devoted community resources sans any threat of forced re-hospitalization. In response to this enduring controversy, this article examines the ethical merits of community order…

How to predict return to the community after fractured proximal femur in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: There are numerous studies about morbidity and mortality, technical complications and in-hospital factors after proximal femoral fracture surgery in the elderly. Although experienced clinicians are often able to make an accurate prediction, little information is available about the factors that allow early determination of whether a patient may return to the community. The present study aimed to provide that information and, hence, allow better use of health resources. METHODS: At Westmead Hospital a prospective study was conducted of 304 patients with a proximal femoral fracture

Variation in cultural attitude, knowledge and individual motivational factors impact engagement and tool use in a field experiment in wild chimpanzees.

Cultural traditions shape how animals approach ecological problems. Over the last two decades, Ugandan chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) have engaged with the honey-trap experiment, an apparatus mimicking a beehive, while relying on their cultural knowledge. Here, we compared the behaviour of three Ugandan chimpanzee communities in the experiment, adding a previously untested community, the Mwera South chimpanzees of Bugoma Forest. First, we tested whether communities varied in their engagement with the experiment and investigated whether differences lay in individual or community-b

CellCom2: An Integrated Web Platform for Flexible Prediction and Visualization Analysis of Cell-cell Communication.

Cell-cell communication across diverse cell types and tissues underlies proper organismal function and is primarily mediated by interactions between secreted ligands and cell-surface receptors. Understanding these molecular interactions is essential for elucidating regulatory networks governing physiological and pathological processes and for identifying potential therapeutic targets. Although several computational tools have been developed for inferring intercellular communication, many existing methods require substantial programming expertise, rely on restricted or method-specific biologica

Pediatric Oncology Knowledge Mobilization in Canada: Protocol for an Environmental Scan.

BACKGROUND: Nonprofit organizations that serve the pediatric oncology community play a crucial role in disseminating quality information that can inform and support people living with childhood cancer, those that work in the field, and others who make key decisions or policies. These registered organizations can be challenging to locate, as the internet is flux with information and resources of varying quality, misinformation, and disinformation. There remains limited understanding of the knowledge mobilization landscape of these organizations in Canada. OBJECTIVE: This study will provide an

Facing the threat of influenza pandemic - roles of and implications to general practitioners.

The 2009 pandemic of H1N1 influenza, compounded with seasonal influenza, posed a global challenge. Despite the announcement of post-pandemic period on 10 August 2010 by the WHO, H1N1 (2009) virus would continue to circulate as a seasonal virus for some years and national health authorities should remain vigilant due to unpredictable behaviour of the virus. Majority of the world population is living in countries with inadequate resources to purchase vaccines and stockpile antiviral drugs. Basic hygienic measures such as wearing face masks and the hygienic practice of hand washing could reduce t
