The study of immune response in Q-fever patients and convalescents at different periods from the beginning of the disease demonstrated the diagnostic possibilities of the complement fixation test (CFT), the microagglutination test (MAT), the passive immunofluorescence test (PIFT) and the enzyme immunoassay (EIA). High effectiveness of EIA in comparison with CFT, MAT and PIFT was noted (97, 63, 87 and 91% respectively). The sensitivity of EIA was not less than 100-250 times higher than that of CFT, 15-100 times higher than that of MAT and 30-80 times higher than that of PIFT.

An outbreak of anthropurgic histoplasmosis occurred in rural South Carolina when a canebrake which served as a blackbird roost was cleared with a bulldozer. Seven days later the index patient became ill with histoplasmosis. Nine other patients contracted the disease, but only the index case was fatal. Fifty surgically confirmed cases of hydatid disease in Eastern Libya were investigated. Of these, 30 had cysts of the liver, five had extra-hepatic abdominal cysts and 15 had cysts in the chest, including the lungs. Mild acid hydrolysis of phase I Coxiella burnetii cells gradually cleaved off polysaccharide chains, which contain determinants of antigen 1, thus unmasking determinants of the diagnostically important antigen 2. This artificial phase I to phase II conversion was reflected by changed serological activity in the complement-fixation (CF) test and by changed nonspecific phagocytosis. The product of mild acid hydrolysis can serve as a complex diagnostic preparation, because it reacts in the CF test with antibodies directed to both C. burnetii antigens.

In some cases of peripheral facial palsy due to a clinically suspected varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, the clinical diagnosis is not supported by serological tests. In a retrospective study, we examined the sera from 63 patients with clinical findings compatible with VZV infection: 57 had paired sera and 6 had single sera. In the paired-sera group, 18 cases were serologically negative initially by complement fixation (CF), while 9 of these cases were actually positive for VZV when CF was combined with ELISA. Use of the single-radial-haemolysis (SRH) technique for the diagnosis of flavivirus infections is described.
