Sertraline-induced panic attacks.

Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (in adults and children), and panic disorder. Although numerous studies have found sertraline to be very effective in the treatment of anxiety, there have been few case reports of panic attacks actually being induced by treatment with sertraline. In this article, we present the cases of two patients without any personal or family history of anxiety disorders who developed panic attacks shortly after the initiation

The links between the Adolescent Dissociative Experiences Scale (A-DES), fantasy proneness, and anxiety symptoms.

The purpose of this study was to further examine the psychometric properties of the Adolescent Dissociative Experiences Scale (A-DES). A sample of normal adolescents (N = 331) aged 12 to 18 years completed the A-DES and questionnaires measuring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, other anxiety disorder symptoms, and fantasy proneness. Factor analysis indicated that the A-DES, at least in nonreferred youths, is assessing a single dimension of dissociation. Furthermore, A-DES scores are not only significantly related to PTSD symptoms but also to other anxiety disorder symptoms (i.e.,

An update on obsessive-compulsive disorder.

It is now recognized that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects almost 3% of the world's population and is a major worldwide health problem. Much has been learned in the past 2 decades about the treatment of these disorders. Recent developments in neuroimaging techniques have led to a better understanding of the biology of OCD and the brain circuits that may be involved in the production of symptoms. The most effective treatment approaches, based on controlled data, are behavior therapy consisting of exposure and response prevention and specific medications. Although controversial, more

Responsive deep brain stimulation guided by ventral striatal electrophysiology of obsession durably ameliorates compulsion.

Treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) occurs in approximately one-third of OCD patients. Obsessions may fluctuate over time but often occur or worsen in the presence of internal (emotional state and thoughts) and external (visual and tactile) triggering stimuli. Obsessive thoughts and related compulsive urges fluctuate (are episodic) and so may respond well to a time-locked brain stimulation strategy sensitive and responsive to these symptom fluctuations. Early evidence suggests that neural activity can be captured from ventral striatal regions implicated in OCD to guide such

Work, social, and family disabilities of subjects with anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Functional impairment scales are increasingly used to evaluate subjects with a variety of mental disorders. METHODS: We evaluated the work, social, and family disabilities of 228 subjects with 6 common anxiety and depressive disorders, as assessed by the Sheehan Disability Scale (major depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and mixed anxiety and depression). RESULTS: Subjects in the 6 diagnostic groups had significantly higher work, social, and family disability scores than control subjects, with the exception of th

Two subtypes of compulsive sexual behavior disorder.

Models explaining addictive behaviors such as the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model emphasize the importance of reinforcement mechanisms for developing and maintaining these behaviors, including compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) as well as personal characteristics as vulnerability factors. This study aimed to determine whether there are CSBD subtypes distinguished by reinforcement sensitivity. We hypothesize that one subtype is sensitive to positive reinforcement (C+subtype) and one is sensitive to negative reinforcement (Ȼ-subtype). We calculated a clust

Pharmacological tightrope: risperidone's balancing act in cri du chat syndrome.

BACKGROUND: This case report describes an infrequent instance of risperidone-induced hyperprolactinemia in a 23-year-old nonverbal male with cri du chat syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: Risperidone, initially prescribed to manage aggressive behaviors, resulted in bilateral gynecomastia and hyperprolactinemia. Tapering of risperidone led to resolution of these symptoms but exposed a resurgence of excessive masturbation, a behavior previously suppressed by the medication. Reintroduction of risperidone controlled this behavior, suggesting its potential role in managing compulsive behaviors in this p

[Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder and Sexual Motivations].

INTRODUCTION: Compulsive sexual behaviour or hypersexuality has been the subject of growing interest among academic circles. However, relatively few reliable predictors have been identified. The aim of the present study was to examine whether different types of sexual motivations based on Self-Determination Theory can account for compulsive sexual behaviour. METHOD: The study was conducted on a non-clinical sample of nearly 1000 participants. Sexual motivation was assessed using the Sexual Motivation Scale and compulsive sexual behaviour was assessed using the Hypersexual Behaviour Inventory.

Conceptualising compulsivity through network analysis: A two-sample study.

Compulsivity is a transdiagnostic construct crucial to understanding multiple psychiatric conditions and problematic repetitive behaviours. Despite being identified as a clinical- and research-relevant construct, there are limited insights into the internal conceptual structure of compulsivity. To provide a more nuanced understanding of compulsivity, the current study estimated the structure of compulsivity (indexed using the previously validated Cambridge-Chicago Compulsivity Trait Scale, CHI-T) among two large-scale and geographically distinct samples using the network estimation method. The

Psychopathological symptoms in individuals at risk of Internet addiction in the context of selected demographic factors.

INTRODUCTION: Researchers who study the problems of Internet addiction point out that this dependence is often co-morbid with symptoms of a variety of pathological disorders, including anxiety, depressive, somatization, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The goal of this study was to compare the severity of psychopathological symptoms in individuals at risk of Internet addiction (according to Young's criteria) and those not at risk of developing this addiction with respect to gender and place of residence (urban vs. rural). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included a group of 692 respondents

Cognitive-behavioural approach to understanding obsessional thinking.

BACKGROUND: Obsessional ruminations (obsessions without any accompanying overt compulsive behaviour) were previously considered especially difficult to treat. METHOD: Cognitive-behavioural theory regarding obsessional problems is discussed. Strategies for therapy developed on the basis of this theory are reviewed. RESULTS: The cognitive-behavioural theory of obsessive-compulsive disorder proposes that obsessional problems occur as a consequence of the particular meaning or significance which patients attach to the occurrence and/or content of intrusive thoughts. When intrusions are interpret

Movement Toward Dimensional Symptom Models of Comorbid Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Eating Disorders.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (EDs) are highly comorbid. Despite the high comorbidity, there is little understanding of why these disorders coexist and even less research on how to best treat this co-occurrence. In this article, we review the literature on comorbid OCD-ED and discuss potential underlying shared mechanisms, including anxiety/avoidance, perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty, habit formation, disgust, shame and guilt, rumination, metacognitive beliefs, and shared biological characteristics. We then discuss prior models of OCD-ED comorbidity and shif

Psychopathological profile of patients with different forms of bruxism.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence of psychopathological symptoms in patients who self-reported different forms of bruxism by means of clinical and anamnestic diagnostic criteria. Eighty-five participants were divided into four groups as sleep bruxers (12), awake bruxers (24), sleep-awake bruxers (33), and non-bruxers (16). A self-report symptom inventory questionnaire (Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R)) was filled out by all groups to determine their psychopathological symptoms. As regards mean psychopathological scores, patients with sleep-awake bruxism endorse

"Can I Have More Than This?" The Role of Romantic Relationship Quality, Maximization Style, and Social Media Addiction in Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Symptoms.

Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (ROCD) is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder that manifests in the relationship domain, such as romantic relationships. Within romantic relationship, ROCD symptoms could be focused on flaws perceived on the relationship itself (ROCD relationship-centered) or on the partners' quality (ROCD partner-focused). These symptoms are associated with negative relationship outcomes, such as low relationship satisfaction. However, no studies have yet addressed the role of relationship quality in the context of ROCD. Furthermore, previous studies have shown t

Schizotypy and smooth pursuit eye movements as potential endophenotypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) show dysfunctions of the fronto-striatal circuitry, which imply corresponding oculomotor deficits including smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). However, evidence for a deficit in SPEM is inconclusive, with some studies reporting reduced velocity gain while others did not find any SPEM dysfunctions in OCD patients. Interestingly, psychosis-like traits have repeatedly been linked to both OCD and impaired SPEM. Here, we examined a large sample of n = 168 patients with OCD, n = 93 unaffected first-degree relatives and n = 171 healthy control subje

Appraisal of cognitive intrusions and response style: replication and extension.

In a replication and extension of an earlier study of cognitive intrusions, appraisal and response strategies (Freeston, Ladouceur, Thibodeau & Gagnon, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 29, 585-597, 1991a), cognitive intrusions were studied among 534 outpatients and escorts recruited in waiting rooms of two large urban hospitals. Appraisals of high probability and low disapproval were associated with greater use of continued attention strategies whereas appraisals of low probability and high disapproval were associated with greater use of escape/avoidance strategies. These results support the di

The psychological morbidity in the long term after war related bilateral lower limb amputation.

BACKGROUND: To determine the psychological morbidity in the long term after war related bilateral lower limb amputation. METHODS: Mental health status was determined by the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) and a structured psychiatrist interview using Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders-IV (SCID-IV) in 327 male amputees. The survey was 22.3 (SD = 3.9) years after amputation. A one-sample t-test was conducted to compare our results with a survey carried out in a rural Iranian population. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 42 years (SD = 6.3). Only 22 persons had psychi

Psychological profile of dysfunctional dysphonia.

A high degree of emotional maladjustment can be detected in dysfunctional dysphonia. In these patients, it is not rare to observe an immediate resolution of the phoniatric disorder, but it is equally as common to identify a significant rate of recurrence (> 10%) in the short and long term. This phenomenon may be due to poor adaptive ability in the presence of mood disorders. Aims of this study were: a. selection of a suitable instrument to identify "minor" and "major" symptoms of psychiatric nature in dysphonic subjects; b. evaluation of profile of mood disorders in dysfunctional dysphonic adu
