UNLABELLED: This review presents an unbiased comparison between the two vaccines available against human papillomavirus (HPV). We conducted a PUBMED and Google search for the years 1998 to October 2008 using the terms: cervical cancer vaccine, HPV vaccine, Gardasil, and Cervarix; and also reviewed abstracts from international meetings. Both vaccines are intended to protect against cervical cancer and high-grade CIN caused by HPV 16 and HPV 18. Only the quadrivalent vaccine is designed to prevent condylomata acuminata and low-grade CIN caused by HPV 6 and HPV 11. It has been approved by the FDA…

Contact eczema was suspected in 58 patients (46%), but 25 of these (43.1%) showed no contact sensitization.
CONCLUSION: The majority of patients with symptoms of anal eczema suffer from intertrigo/candidiasis, and relevant, causative conta …

More than one lesion type was diagnosed in 15%. Flat lesions, papular lesions, and condylomata acuminata were seen in 83%, 29%, and 4%, respectively. HPV was detected in 59% of the penile scrapings, containing mainly oncogenic HPV types. When penile lesions were present at peniscopy, 67% of penile scrapings were positive for HPV, whereas 37% were HPV-p …

The various types of sexually trasmitted diseases (STDs) were syphilis (31%) followed by condylomata acuminata (16%), herpes genitalis (15%), gonorrhoea (9%), and mixed infections (12%). Despite their varied sexual behavior, none of the patients were HIV positive; however, it is always advisable to screen all STD patients for HIV antibody.

The L1 genes of two human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) isolates derived from condylomata acuminata were used to express the L1 major capsid protein in insect cells via recombinant baculoviruses. Both L1 major capsid proteins self-assembled into virus-like particles (VLP) with high efficiency and could be purified in preparative amounts on density gradients. The yield of VLP was 3 orders of magnitude higher than what has been obtained previously, using L1 derived from the prototype HPV16. DNA sequence comparison identified a single nonconserved amino acid change to be responsible for the inef…

Archived Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears from women with different cervical pathologies were processed for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA detection and typing with an in situ hybridization (ISH) assay that employed commercial biotinylated HPV DNA probes. Two HPV DNA probes were utilized: one included HPV genotypes 6/11 and the other, 16/18. The method yielded positive results for HPV DNA 6/11 in 5 cases with condylomata acuminata (100%) and in 2 of 47 with flat warty lesions (4.2%), whereas HPV DNA 16/18 was detected in 29/47 of the latter group (61.7%). In cases with cervical intraepithe…

OBJECTIVE: To enhance nurse clinicians' knowledge of genital human papillomavirus infection in women.
DATA SOURCES: Several literature searches using the following terms, dating back to 1986: human papillomavirus (HPV), females, human, cervical neoplasia, risk factors, condylomata acuminata, detection, epidemiology, pathology, psychology, Papanicolaou test, immunosuppression, HIV infection, and AIDS.
STUDY SELECTIONS: Forty-three formal research studies regarding the association of various types of HPV infection with cervical intraepithelial lesions, the putative precursor lesions for cervic…

Condylomas of the genital tract can be found in 70% of patients who have cytologic evidence of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection or mild epithelial dysplasia (CIN I). Most male sexual partners of women with overt or subclinical HPV infections have no visible condylomas. Presently, there is no therapy for subclinically infected male partners. A screening test capable of detecting such HPV infections in males would be of value should effective therapy be discovered. Fifty-four men who were the current sexual partners of women with visible condylomata acuminata or with cytologic evidence of s…

BACKGROUND Condyloma lata is a hallmark of secondary syphilis, presenting as moist, flat, or raised lesions typically located in the genital and perineal regions. However, oropharyngeal condyloma lata (OCL) is a rare and often underrecognized manifestation of secondary syphilis. Its atypical presentation can lead to diagnostic challenges, particularly in the absence of classic systemic features of syphilis. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 43-year-old man with HIV and chronic hepatitis C virus co-infection, diagnosed 2 years prior. The patient had been receiving antiretroviral therapy with

The Buschke-Löwenstein tumor is a rare disease associated with human papillomavirus infection. The condition manifests with an ulcerative, exophytic tumor localized in the perineal area. Generally considered as non-cancerous, the growth may develop malignant transformation. Our manuscript highlights the importance of early diagnosis with histopathological analysis.

BACKGROUND: There are various available therapies for plane warts; however, no specific therapy has been established as entirely effective.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of work was to assess the effectiveness and safety of topically hydrogen peroxide (HP) 40% solution in treating the plane warts.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included 30 patients diagnosed clinically as plane warts. Topical HP 40% was applied with a single-use wood end of a cotton swab soaked with the solution to minimize filtration of effective drug to the surrounding areas. Duration of the treatment was planned to be 4 sessions fo

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is highly prevalent worldwide, and one of its consequences is the external genital wart, or Condyloma Acuminata (CA). The present study used Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to treat CA lesions. PDT treated 23 patients with a clinical diagnosis of multifocal and unifocal CA. Patients were divided into Group 1 (G1, Patients without pathologies associated with immunodeficiency) and Group 2 (G2, patients with pathologies associated with immunodeficiency). In the G1 group (19 patients), PDT resulted in a Complete Response in 68.4% (average 5 PDT cycles), Partial Resp

Condyloma acuminata are a type of verrucous hyperplasia in the genital and perianal areas caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Traditional treatment methods for condyloma acuminata, such as topical medications, carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, cryotherapy, and surgical excision, can be effective at removing warts, however, they do not eliminate subclinical and latent HPV infection, resulting in a high recurrence rate and even leaving trauma and scars. We report a case of condyloma acuminata covering the glans penis, considering our patient had a singular, large lesion, thus, to reduce t

Selecting a topical treatment from among the numerous topical agents for external genital warts remains challenging without clear evidence. Our aim was to evaluate comparatively the efficacy and safety of topical agents for external genital warts using a network meta-analysis. We included all randomized controlled trials that evaluated any topically applied treatment for external genital warts. Using the R package netmeta, network meta-analyses were performed with a frequentist approach. We identified 41 relevant studies comprising 6371 patients. Among conventional agents, podophyllotoxin 0·5%

A 26-year-old man who has sex with men visited the STI clinic because of increasing skin abnormalities since four months. The patient had macular skin lesions on his penis and scrotum, condylomata lata in the anal region, cutaneous lesions on the feet, and a widespread papular rash. A secondary stage of syphilis was diagnosed.

Genital warts, 90% of which are caused by human papillomavirus types 6 and 11, are a significant problem in the UK. The cost of managing genital warts was previously estimated at £52.4 million for 2010. The objective of this study was to estimate the cost of genital warts management up to 2012 in the UK and by jurisdiction. Population statistics and the number of reported genital warts cases in genito-urinary medicine clinics were obtained and extrapolated to 2012. Cases of genital warts treated in primary care were estimated from The Health Improvement Network database. The number of visits a
