[Acute toxic liver lesion through industrial noxious substances and drugs in higher than therapeutic doses].

From the accessible material an attempt was made to estimate the frequency of acute toxic disturbances of liver and its relation to all intoxications together with special regard to the composition of noxious substances on the conditions of this country. From 3700 cases of all acute intoxications or serious attempts of intoxication 54 cases were discovered to have marked hepatic disturbance (about 1.5%). The noxious substance causing hepatic disturbance in the overwhelming majority of cases was tetrachlormethan (and chemically related substances) or new herbicide drugs of the dipyridine compou

Association of Galanin and Its Receptor Gene Polymorphism with Opioid Dependence: Preliminary Findings from India.

BACKGROUND: Genetic factors contribute to the development of opioid dependence syndrome (ODS), with evidence suggesting that the neuropeptide galanin, which plays a role in the stress response, may influence addiction risk through its receptor galanin receptor 1 (GALR1). However, this area is largely unexplored in the Indian context. METHODS: This case-control study included 85 opioid-dependent patients and 85 healthy controls, all males, recruited from a tertiary care hospital in North India. All participants were assessed using a socio-demographic proforma, a case record form for substance

Improving the efficiency of estrus synchronization in cows.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effects of biologically active substances and electrical stimulation of the uterus in cows on the effectiveness of estrus synchronization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety (n = 90) Kazakh white-headed cows were synchronized with two injections of gonadotropin-releasing hormone on days 0 and 9 and prostaglandin F2α on day 7. The cows were divided into six groups and, during the protocol, treated with biologically active substances (Tetramag, Selevetum, antiseptic-stimulator Dorogov 2 fraction, groups 2, 3, and 4). Cows in groups 5 and 6 were treated wi

Substance Use, Hospitalizations, and Co-Occurring Disorders among Patients Transferred from a Needle Exchange Program to Opioid Maintenance Treatment.

Opioid use disorders (OUD) is a relapsing condition with high mortality. Opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) reduces heroin use, and overall morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of psychiatric and substance use disorders, potential baseline predictors for psychiatric hospitalization, and psychiatric diagnoses at follow-up were investigated and may give hints about possible preventative strategies. The medical records for 71 patients were reviewed 36 months following referral to OMT from a needle exchange program (NEP). Their psychiatric diagnoses and hospitalizations were identified. Their b

Relationships Between Alexithymia and Psychopathy in Heroin Dependent Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathy and substance use disorders are highly co-morbid and their co-occurrence is associated with higher severity of addictive behavior and increased risk of violent offending. Both substance use disorders and psychopathy are related to prominent impairments in emotion processing, which are also central features of alexithymia. The nature of the relationship between psychopathy and alexithymia is not well-understood and has been particularly understudied among substance dependent individuals. AIM: Our goal was to evaluate the levels of psychopathy and alexithymia in a relati

Opioid Control Policies Can Also Reduce Domestic Violence.

Opioid abuse is an issue of serious concern in the United States, and it has been the focus of a multitude of state and federal level polici … quired health care providers to consult an electronic database before prescribing and/or dispersing controlled substances. These programs have been shown to be effective at reducing the utilization of prescription opioids. Our analysis suggests that they may have also decreased the instances of intimate partner assaults, driven primarily by a decrease in simple assault …

Therapeutic Applications for Homeopathy in Clinical Practice.

Homeopathy was founded some two hundred years ago by Dr Samuel Christian Hahnemann. Over time, it has grown to be among the most frequently used forms of alternative medicine in Europe and the USA. It is underpinned by the principle of 'like cures like', where highly diluted substances are used for therapeutic purposes, by producing similar symptoms to when the substance is used in healthy people. Many studies have been published on the value of homeopathy in treating diseases such as cancer, depression, psoriasis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, otitis, migraine, neuroses, allergies, joint disease

Nonfatal Overdoses Among Pregnant Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder.

Little is understood about overdose history among pregnant individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). We performed a cross-sectional secondary analysis of data from the OPTI-Mom 2.0 (Optimizing Pregnancy and Treatment Interventions for Moms 2.0) study (NCT03833245), a multi-site randomized controlled trial of patient navigation and usual care. We summarized participant demographics, overdose history, and substances involved in most recent overdose. Of the 102 participants with severe OUD included, 64.7% (95% CI 54.8-73.4%) had a reported a history of an overdose event and 41.2% (95% CI 31-52%

A Case report of a continuous ambulatory drug delivery (CADD) pump to deliver opioid agonist treatment in an acute care setting.

BACKGROUND: People with substance use disorder are at risk of complications of drug use and frequent hospitalization and may continue to use substances during admission to acute care. Acute care harm reduction strategies including oral or injectable prescription opioids may aid in care retention and improve health outcomes in this patient population. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman with refractory opioid use disorder was admitted to hospital for management of dysphagia secondary to esophageal stricture. She received injectable opioid agonist therapy using a continuous ambulatory drug d

Thermoresponsive Polyphosphoester via Polycondensation Reactions: Synthesis, Characterization, and Self-Assembly.

Using a novel strategy, amphiphilic polyphosphoesters based on poly(oxyethylene H-phosphonate)s (POEHP) with different poly(ethylene glycol) segment lengths and aliphatic alcohols with various alkyl chain lengths were synthesized using polycondensation reactions. They were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C {H} NMR 31P NMR, IR, and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The effects of the polymer structure on micelle formation and stability, micelle size, and critical micelle temperature were studied via dynamic light scattering (DLS). The hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of these polymers can be contr

[Present status and future possibilities of adjuvant pharmacotherapy for aphasia].

Aphasia is one of the most frequent and disabling consequences of stroke. Poor spontaneous recovery and the limited success of conventional speech therapy bring up the question of how current treatment approaches can be improved. Besides increasing training frequency-with daily sessions lasting several hours and high repetition rates of language materials ("massed training")-adjuvant drug therapy may help to increase therapy efficacy. In this article, we illuminate the potential of monoaminergic (bromocriptine, levodopa, d-amphetamine) and cholinergic (donepezil) substances for treating aphasi

The California registration system for habitues to schedule II drugs.

In order to help control abuse and prevent over-prescribing, California has developed triplicate prescriptions for Schedule II narcotics as well as a system for physicians to publicly register patients who are habitues to Schedule II Controlled Substances. A preliminary evaluation indicates that there is under-reporting and confusion among physicians about the system, but it has probably helped control Schedule II narcotic abuse in California while not depriving patients of needed treatment. Physicians appear to prescribe Schedule II narcotics for serious medical conditions but may underprescr…

Methamphetamine exposures reported to United States poison control centers, 2000-2019.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate characteristics and trends of methamphetamine exposures reported to United States (US) poison control centers. METHODS: Data from the National Poison Data System were analyzed. RESULTS: From January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2019, US poison control centers managed 54,199 cases involving methamphetamine as the first-ranked substance. Adults 20-39 years old accounted for more than half (56.3%) of cases. There were 1,291 deaths, of which 43.0% involved multiple-substance exposures. Among multiple-substance exposures in which methamphetamine was the first-ranked subs

Reductions in substance use-related parenting behaviors after participation in a digitally delivered parenting intervention.

UNLABELLED: The Family Check-Up Online (FCU-O) fills a unique gap in family prevention by providing digital, accessible content to support substance-involved parents outside of residential treatment settings to reduce the impact of substance use on parenting. We examined whether parents reported reductions in coping motivations for substance use (CM) and substance use-related parenting interference (PI) after completing the FCU-O substance use module. We further explored whether baseline substance use-related risk was associated with differential change in parenting outcomes over time. METHOD

Polysubstance use after remission in first-episode psychosis: Associations with positive symptoms and self-care.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use is common among patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP). While long-term studies link substance use to poorer outcomes, short-term associations, particularly involving polysubstance use, remain understudied. This study examined substance use patterns 3 to 6 months after remission and their associations with symptoms, cognition, and functioning. METHODS: Data were derived from the HAMLETT randomized controlled trial, which compared continuation versus early discontinuation of antipsychotic medication following remission, using assessments at baseline, 3, an

Maternal neural responses to infant cries and faces: relationships with substance use.

Substance abuse in pregnant and recently post-partum women is a major public health concern because of effects on the infant and on the ability of the adult to care for the infant. In addition to the negative health effects of teratogenic substances on fetal development, substance use can contribute to difficulties associated with the social and behavioral aspects of parenting. Neural circuits associated with parenting behavior overlap with circuits involved in addiction (e.g., frontal, striatal, and limbic systems) and thus may be co-opted for the craving/reward cycle associated with substanc

Relation between cyclic GMP generation and cerebrovascular reactivity: modulation by NPY and alpha-trinositol.

It is considered that cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) plays a pivotal role in mediating the relaxation of vascular and nonvascular smooth muscles. cGMP steady state levels are regulated by guanylyl cyclase, cGMP phosphodiesterases and its flux from cells. The present study examines the possible relation between cerebrovascular vasodilator agents and generation of cGMP in guinea pig cerebral vessels. Acetylcholine, substance P, nitroglycerine and sodium nitroprusside significantly increased the generation of cGMP. The application of acetylcholine, substance P, nitroglycerine and sodium ni
