BACKGROUND/AIMS: The studies published so far mention a high rate of complication and conversion in laparoscopic surgical treatment of acute cholecystitis. Considering the relatively high conversion rate in cases of acute cholecystitis, it is necessary to pre-operatively estimate the chance of successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy. One of the aims of this study was to determine the factors that influence the chance of success of this technique. Another aim was to define possible advantages of the method.
METHODOLOGY: From 1991 through to 1995, a total of 295 patients in whom acute cholecyst

AIM: Cystic duct stump remnant causing "postcholecystectomy syndrome" is an uncommon but clinically significant complication. Symptomatic cystic duct stump stones often necessitate redo completion cholecystectomy. Here, we share our experience with the clinical presentation and surgical management of this condition.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 60 patients with residual cystic duct disease who underwent completion cholecystectomy between August 2016 and September 2024. Investigations included abdominal ultrasound and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. The de

OBJECTIVE: The authors review their initial experience with laparoscopic splenectomy in patients with hematologic diseases. Efficacy, morbidity, and mortality of the technique are presented, and other patient recovery parameters are discussed.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Laparoscopic splenectomy is performed infrequently and data regarding its safety and efficacy are scarce. Factors such as a high level of technical difficulty, the potential for sudden, severe hemorrhage, and slow accrual of operative experience due to a relatively limited number of procedures are responsible. The potential pati

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to describe a surgical technique that uses transforaminal full-endoscopic access, which is dif … pair. The gold standard for treatment of the most significant nonpunctate lesions continues to be a conversion to open surgery for lesion closure. Conversion can be problematic because most surgeries are performed under sedation and local anesthesia.
CONCLUSIONS: In this case report and the new endoscopic suture technique described here, we show that primary correction of …

Background: Laparoscopic surgery (LS) is widely recognized as the standard minimally invasive method for colorectal cancer. Although robotic surgery (RS) has seen increased adoption, its clinical and economic advantages over LS remain uncertain. Methods: A systematic search was carried out across PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register up to March 2025. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) directly comparing RS and LS were included. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) and mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random-effects models. Heterogeneity wa

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the successes and challenges of endoscopic orbital floor fracture repairs.
METHODS: We analyzed 53 orbital floor repairs and recorded the indications for surgery, factors that complicated the endoscopic repair or necessitated conversion to an open approach, and outcomes for each.
RESULTS: Forty-five procedures were completed endoscopically. Repairs of smaller injuries confined entirely to the medial floor were readily accomplished, particularly when entrapment was the primary indication for surgery. Endoscopic repair became very difficult and often not possible when a

We report here two patients with volvulus of the small bowel after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). There has been only one case report of a similar condition after LC in the English literature; the patient had malrotation of the midgut. Both patients we are reporting had previous pelvic surgery resulting in intraabdominal adhesions. Volvulus had occurred along an axis between the mesenteric attachment and the adhesion to the parietal peritoneum of the involved loop of small bowel. The creation of pneumoperitoneum could conceivably allow rotation to occur. One patient presented with signs of

AIM: To evaluate the short-term and oncological outcomes of laparoscopy compared to open procedures for colorectal cancer in the emergency setting.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-nine consecutive patients undergoing emergency open (n=38) or laparoscopic (n=11) major resection were analyzed.
RESULTS: There were no significant differences in age, gender, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, body mass index (BMI), history of previous abdominal surgery and tumor location between the open and laparoscopy groups. Pathological T4 tumors were more commonly observed in the open-surgery gro

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic Ladd's procedure (LL) for intestinal malrotation remains controversial, owing to a higher postoperative volvulus rate than that associated with open management. We aimed to identify risk factors for postoperative volvulus after LL in pediatric patients with intestinal malrotation and evaluate the outcomes of redo LL in recurrent cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center, retrospective cohort study included pediatric patients aged <16 years who underwent LL for intestinal malrotation at Vietnam National Children's Hospital from April 2017 to March 2023. Open c

BACKGROUND: Centralization of subspeciality procedures in Australia is difficult due to a vast geographical span and in the appropriate patient group, surgery in regional centres should be considered. Our study reviews the safety of adrenalectomy performed at a low-volume regional centre in regards to length of hospital admission, operative time, complication rate and conversion to open rate.
METHOD: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed of consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic or open adrenalectomy over a nine-year period (2012-2021) at Dubbo Base Hospital, a regional ho

BACKGROUND: Severe adhesions and fibrosis between the posterior wall of the gallbladder and liver bed often render total cholecystectomy after percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) difficult, leading to high open conversion rates. Since the publication of Tokyo Guidelines 2018 (TG18), our policy has shifted from open conversion to subtotal cholecystectomy (SC) when total laparoscopic cholecystectomy for difficult cases of cholecystitis is not feasible. Recently, SC has been frequently applied as bailout surgery for complicated cholecystitis. Nonetheless, the efficacy and valid

Background/Objective: Laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) and robotic gastrectomy (RG) exhibit similar surgical outcomes in patients with gastric cancer (GC), except for the higher cost associated with RG. Comparative surgical outcome studies after open conversion from laparoscopic (OL) and robotic (OR) gastrectomy in GC are limited. This study aimed to evaluate clinical effectiveness while considering differences in procedural cost. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included a comparative analysis of patients with GC who underwent OL or OR. Inclusion criteria were histologically confirmed ad

BACKGROUND: Concern regarding suboptimal cure rates has led to some endocrine surgery units abandoning focused parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism in favor of open bilateral neck exploration or making intraoperative parathyroid hormone estimation mandatory in focused parathyroidectomy. This study explores whether focused parathyroidectomy for radiologically localized primary hyperparathyroidism without intraoperative parathyroid hormone is still a valid approach.
