Twenty-nine cases of complicated diphtheria infection occurring during an epidemic in Khartoum are reviewed. The organism was a Corynebacterium diphtheriae subsp. gravis with an unusual property of fermenting sucrose. Eighteen patients were detected during prospective follow-up, where as 11 presented initially with a complication. Complications were mostly seen among pre-school children (65.5%). A number of 700 guinea pigs were immunized by parenteral route with non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae strains, then inoculated with various doses of homologous and heterologous toxigenic C. diphitheriae strains. BACKGROUND: In June 2015, a 45-year-old man suffering from acute necrotic tonsillitis and throat phlegmon was hospitalized in Nuremberg, Germany. After emergency surgery the patient was initially treated with antibiotics.
RESULTS: A throat swab grew a toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae biovar mitis strain. The patient's vaccination status was not documented and the patient was tested serologically for anti-diphtheria antibodies showing no protective immunity. Extensive control investigations were performed by the local health department showing no likely source of his infection.

Drilling-fluid-utilising microorganisms present in drill mud cuttings collected from the Agbara oilfield were isolated on mineral salts agar plates. Thirty-two isolates were obtained, 26 of which were Gram-positive bacteria and six fungi. The isolates were identified as Bacillus sp. (10), Staphylococcus sp. (12), Micrococcus sp. (2), Corynebacterium sp. (1), Nocardia sp. (1), and Penicillium sp. (6). Screen tests indicated that 27 (84.4%) of the isolates did not grow with any of the drilling fluids One Bacillus and three Staphylococcus spp. were strong primary utilisers of the drilling fluids.
