Dental manifestations associated with Seckel syndrome type II: a case report.

Seckel syndrome is a rare form of primordial dwarfism that is characterized by short stature, skeletal defects, mental retardation, and characteristic facial features such as microcephaly, micrognathia, and a bird-head appearance. Dental findings include hypodontia, enamel hypoplasia, crowding, and Class II malocclusion. The purpose of this paper was to report the case of a female patient with Seckel syndrome type II and describe her orodental manifestations. She presented with interesting dental findings, including gingival hyperplasia, recession and ulceration, significant crowding, and earl

Toriello-Carey syndrome in a Turkish newborn.

Toriello-Carey syndrome in a Turkish newborn: Toriello-Carey syndrome is characterized by agenesis of the corpus callosum, telecanthus, short palpebral fissures, small nose with anteverted nares, retrognathia, abnormal ears, laryngeal and cardiac anomalies, brachydactyly, and hypotonia. We describe the findings in a Turkish newborn, presumed to be another example of the Toriello-Carey syndrome, which extends the phenotype of the syndrome.

Macrocephaly-capillary malformation: a report of three cases and review of the literature.

Macrocephaly-Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (M-CMTC) is a rare syndrome that was first delineated as distinct from Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (CMTC) in 1997. Since that time, there have been over 75 cases reported in the literature, though few are in the dermatology literature. The syndrome is characterized by macrocephaly, neonatal hypotonia, developmental delay, segmental overgrowth, syndactyly, asymmetry, connective tissue defects, and vascular stains. We report three new patients seen at the University of Miami Genodermatoses Clinic with features of M-CMTC. We bel

Craniofacial morphology in an unusual case with nasal aplasia studied by roentgencephalometry and three-dimensional CT scanning.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the three-dimensional morphology of internal structures of the craniofacial region and present the orthodontic problems in an unusual case with nasal aplasia. PATIENT: The patient was an 11.5-year-old boy with aplasia of the nose and nasal cavity with extremely constricted nasopharyngeal airway. He did not have mental or somatic retardation. The patient had dacryostenosis. The morphology of the craniofacial structures was characterized by absence of septal structures, including cribriform plate, perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone, vomer, and septal cartilage; bony hypot

Popliteal pterygium syndrome with unusual features.

Popliteal pterygium syndrome is a well defined complex that consists of popliteal pterygium, intercrural pterygium, various digital anomalies that include hypoplasia or agenesis of digits, syndactyly, valgus or varus deformities of the feet and oral anomalies such as cleft lip-palate. A baby with the typical anomalies as well as a few unusual features such as mongloid slant, hypertelorism, malformed alae nasi and elbow joint contractures is reported.

Morphological features and measurements in a human fetus with karyotype 69, XXX: comparison with fetuses of the same CRL, without chromosomal anomalies.

A triploid fetus (karyotype 69, XXX) with crown-rump length (CRL) 94 mm, presenting micro- and retrognathia, low-set ears and crooked feet, was cleared and double-stained with alizarin red S and alcian blue for detecting the ossification patterns in the vertebral column, ribs, ischium, limbs, and face. Longitudinal measurements of some long bones in the upper (humerus, ulna, radius) and lower (femur, tibia, fibula) limb were taken. The values of both the total length (TL) and the ossified part (OL) of each long bone, as well as the OL/TL per cent ratio were considered. Reference points were lo

Evidence for the "midline" hypothesis in associated defects of laterality formation and multiple midline anomalies.

A male infant was liveborn at 38 weeks of gestation to a G4P1AB2, 22-year-old, mother. Polyhydramnios and multiple congenital anomalies were noted by ultrasonography; the infant died 5 min after birth. At autopsy, the infant had multiple defects of blastogenesis including midline anomalies with asplenia and abnormalities of laterality formation. The laterality defects were unusual in that they combined asplenia with hypoplastic, symmetrically unilobate lungs and bilateral hyparterial bronchi more consistent with polysplenia, abdominal situs inversus with midline stomach, symmetric liver, and l

Condensates of the chromatin regulator ANKRD11 restrict hypertranscribed genes to safeguard development.

Genes that define cell identity are often highly transcribed, but how their activity is regulated to prevent pathological dysregulation remains elusive. Using a two-tiered genetic screen, we identify a network of genes regulating hypertranscribed loci, which is notably enriched for genes mutated in developmental disorders. Among these, ANKRD11, a chromatin regulator haploinsufficient in KBG syndrome, exerts progressively stronger repression on more highly transcribed genes. ANKRD11 enriches around hypertranscribed loci and forms biomolecular condensates via charge-block-patterned intrinsically

Ocular manifestations of oblique facial clefts.

INTRODUCTION: In the Tessier classification, craniofacial clefts are numbered from 0 to 14 and extend along constant axes through the eyebrows, eyelids, maxilla, nostrils, and the lips. We studied a patient with bilateral cleft 10 associated with ocular abnormalities. METHOD: Clinical report with orbital and cranial computed tomography. RESULTS: After pregnancy complicated by oligohydramnios, digoxin, and lisinopril exposure, a boy was born with facial and ocular dysmorphism. Examination at age 26 months showed bilateral epibulbar dermoids, covering half the corneal surface, and unilateral m

Agnathia-synotia-microstomia (otocephaly): a case report in an African woman.

Pharyngeal arches appear in the 4th and 5th weeks of development of the human embryo. The 1st pharyngeal arch develops into the incus and malleus, premaxilla, maxilla, zygomatic bone; part of the temporal bone, the mandible and it contributes to the formation of bones of the middle ear. The musculature of the 1st pharyngeal arch includes muscles of mastication, anterior belly of the digastric mylohyoid, tensor tympani and tensor palatini. The second pharyngeal arch gives rise to the stapes, styloid process of the temporal bone, stylohyoid ligament, the lesser horn and upper part of the body of

Apert Syndrome: Oral, Maxillofacial and Dental Management-A Narrative Clinical Review.

Apert syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by premature fusion of the cranial sutures, syndactyly of the extremities, and distinct craniofacial deformities. The condition results from mutations in the FGFR2 gene, which disrupt normal craniofacial growth and lead to complex functional and morphological abnormalities. Patients with Apert syndrome commonly present with stomatognathic abnormalities, which significantly affect oral function and facial development. The management of Apert syndrome requires a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach. Surgical treatment strategies are typic

Skeletal and Non-skeletal Phenotypes in Children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Although fractures are the defining characteristic of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), the disorder affects many tissues. Here we discuss three … ities and lack of physical activity may also contribute to low muscle mass and function. Dental and craniofacial abnormalities are also very common in severe OI and include abnormal tooth structure (dentinogenesis imperfecta), malocclusion, and deformities in the bones of the face and the skull. It is hoped that future treatment approaches will address these OI-related phen …

Ultrasound and fetal magnetic resonance imaging: Clinical performance in the prenatal diagnosis of orofacial clefts and mandibular abnormalities.

Cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, is the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly and the second most common birth defect worldwide. Micrognathia is a rare facial malformation characterized by small, underdeveloped mandible and frequently associated with retrognathia. Second- and third-trimester prenatal ultrasound is the standard modality for screening and identification of fetal orofacial abnormalities, with a detection rate in the low-risk population ranging from 0% to 73% for all types of cleft. The prenatal ultrasonography detection can also be performed during the first trimest
