Cyanobacterial toxins have been shown to have adverse effects on mammals, birds and fish and are therefore being increasingly recognised as a potent stress and health hazard factor in aquatic ecosystems. Microcystins, which are cyclic heptapeptides and a main group of the cyanotoxins, are mainly retained within the producer-cells during cyanobacterial bloom development. However, these toxins are released into the surrounding medium by senescence and lysis of the blooms. The released toxins could then come into contact with a wide range of aquatic organisms including invertebrates, fish and aqu…

BACKGROUND: Evidence for the scientific basis of purported therapeutic effects and adverse effects of herbal supplements continues to grow. Many herbal supplements are touted for their immunostimulatory properties, and both in vitro and in vivo experiments have supported this claim. Although this explains their beneficial effects in preventing or curtailing disease, to our knowledge, no immunostimulatory herbal supplements have been reported to exacerbate disorders of immune system overactivity.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe 3 patients whose autoimmune disease onset and/or flares correlated with

Unialgal cultures of Gonyaulax monilata were cultured and harvested. A modified Westphall procedure was used to prepare an extract which did not contain saxitoxin, the gonyautoxins and structurally related toxins. The extract was administered i.p. to young adult, male CD-1 mice and produced: sedation, abdominal constriction, fecal clumping in the perianal area, ataxia, tremors, cyanosis, loss of reflexes, convulsions and death (LD50 = 2.28 mg/kg). Gross and microscopic pathology in the treated mice included: acute active hyperemia of the viscera, multifocal areas of necrosis of the musculature

Several of these strains were cyanobacteria affiliated with the Leptolyngbyales, suggesting that they either continue to perform oxygenic photosynthesis or, hypothetically, switch to H2S-dependent anoxygenic photosynthesis. Our results indicate that these microbialite communities adapt to lon …

Saxitoxins, produced by freshwater cyanobacteria and marine dinoflagellates, block neuronal sodium channels and can cause paralysis or death. They contaminate drinking water, bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, and pose serious health risks. Conventional detection methods, though reliable, are costly, time-consuming, and require specialized personnel, limiting rapid or on-site use. Biosensors have emerged as attractive alternatives, with electrochemical platforms standing out for their high sensitivity, low cost, miniaturization potential, and easy integration into portable devices. These adva…

Space exploration demands sustainable technologies to minimize reliance on Earth-based resources. The extreme-tolerant cyanobacterium Chroococcidiopsis sp. CCMEE 029 exhibits remarkable resistance to perchlorate salts ubiquitously found on Martian soil, holding promise for in situ resource utilization. Exploring the proteomic responses to this chaotropic agent is fundamental for understanding the mechanisms of salt-stress response in cyanobacteria and to develop biotechnologies based on local resources to support human outposts. Hence, using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, we a…

Lichens are mutualistic symbiosis between a fungus (mycobiont) and an alga or cyanobacteria (photobiont), forming metabolically versatile holobionts capable of producing diverse secondary metabolites that facilitate their survival in extreme environments. Chrysothrix species, commonly known as "gold dust lichens," are characterized by their vivid yellow thalli and their production of pulvinic acid derivatives, although their bioactive potential remains poorly explored. In this study, using organic chemistry techniques, we characterized the methanolic extract of Chrysothrix sp.-collected from t…

Constraint-based reconstruction and analysis (COBRA) is a powerful systems biology approach for computational bioengineering. Synechococcus elongatus PCC 11801 and PCC 11802 are fast-growing, stress-tolerant cyanobacteria that are promising platforms for photosynthetic biomanufacturing. Here, we present constraint-based models (CBMs) iLV1052 and iLV1087 of PCC 11801 and PCC 11802, respectively, to facilitate and streamline strain engineering efforts. Following draft reconstruction using a template model, the models underwent extensive manual curation to reduce redundancy, and verification usin…

Ferredoxin-dependent flavin thioredoxin reductases (FFTRs) catalyze the reduction of the disulfide bond in thioredoxins using electrons transferred from ferredoxin, and therefore play a pivotal role in cellular disulfide relay reactions. FFTRs are essential in cyanobacteria such as Gloeobacter and Prochlorococcus, in which they serve as the sole thioredoxin reduction system, as well as in certain Clostridium species, where they are implicated in processes such as sporulation. Despite the well-established role of ferredoxin in reducing FFTRs, the underlying mechanistic details remain poorly und…

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs), normally dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa, pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems due to the release of various harmful metabolites. Cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal commonly found in surface water and sediments, often coincides with cHABs in eutrophic lakes. However, the ecotoxicological effects of Cd on M. aeruginosa and the potential for combined toxicity are not yet fully understood. In this study, we determined the effective concentrations of cadmium from 10 % (EC10) to 50 % (EC50) for M. aeruginosa based on cell density inhibition. We then conducte…

Oocystis borgei, a microalgae species employed for regulating the quality of aquaculture water, demonstrates the capacity to adsorb noxious substances, curtail the growth of detrimental bacteria, and outcompete blooming cyanobacteria. It can be concentrated by natural sedimentation and stored at room temperature, making it costless and simple to transport and use. To study the mechanism of adaptation to room temperature preservation, O. borgei was concentrated (1.19 × 107-1.21 × 107 cell/mL) and stored for 50 days at low (5 °C, LT), normal (25 °C, NT), and high (35 °C, HT) temperatures, respec…

GR15 is a short molecule or peptide composed of aliphatic amino acids and possesses to have antioxidant properties. The GR15, 1GGGAFSGKDPTKVDR15 was identified from the protein S-adenosylmethionine synthase (SAMe) expressed during the sulfur departed state of Arthrospira platensis (spirulina or cyanobacteria). The in-silico assessment and the structural features of GR15 showed its antioxidant potency. Real-time PCR analysis found the up-regulation of ApSAMe expression on day 15 against oxidative stress due to 10 mM H2O2 treatment in A. platensis (Ap). The antioxidant activity of GR15 was acces…
