BACKGROUND: In the early preverbal mother-infant communication, the impact of postpartum depression (PPD) on Parental Embodied Mentalizing (PEM) remains unclear. PEM may also depend on maternal parenting stress and emotion regulation difficulties. This study is the first to investigate PEM in mothers with and without PPD using the clinical coding system Parental Embodied Mentalizing Assessment (PEMATM). It was hypothesized that PPD-mothers exhibit more PEMATM risk and fewer protective factors as a function of higher parenting stress and greater difficulties in emotional regulation compared to

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, 10% of postpartum women experience postpartum depression, which can lead to diverse sequalae at individual, family, and societal levels. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that 17% of women experience depression in the postpartum period, which could be an underestimate as 48% of women in the region do not receive postnatal care (81% in Ethiopia and 51% in Guinea) and a large share of postpartum depression remains undiagnosed and untreated as a result. Globally, despite a critical evidence gap, there are growing reports of postpartum depression among women mistreated

INTRODUCTION: Adiponectin and leptin play important roles in the central nervous system. During the postpartum period, there is a need for a better understanding of the relationship between these cytokines and the neurological development of the infant, as well as their influence on preventing maternal depressive symptoms.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the correlation between adiponectin and leptin in maternal plasma and breast milk and their association with: infant neurodevelopment at 6 and 12 months of age; and maternal mental health over the first year postpartum.
METHODS: Prospective cohort stu

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression, one of the most common forms of depression, is highly prevalent worldwide among women during childbirth. Despite available treatments for postpartum depression, numerous barriers hinder women to access care including time, financial constraints, and childcare concerns. Telemedicine interventions are suggested to be feasible to prevent and improve postpartum depression.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of telemedicine interventions - delivered exclusively during the postnatal period, on postpartum depression symptomatology in women with no history of m

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been associated with an increased risk of postpartum depressive symptoms, while maternal vitamin D status may also be related to perinatal mood disturbances. This study investigated the association between first-trimester serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)-positive postpartum depressive symptoms in women with GDM.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 242 women with GDM. Prenatal depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9

We aimed to determine the association between paternal bonding failure and depression in the postpartum period and children's neurodevelopment, as an Adjunct Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), a prospective cohort study. We evaluated the association between the Japanese version of the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS) / Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores for fathers and the Ages and Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3) scores in their 4-year-old children. Paternal MIBS and EPDS were administered at 1 month postpartum. Data from 646 father-ch

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health may influence the uptake and persistence of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use to prevent HIV. Because HIV acquisition risk increases during the perinatal period, we explored the anticipated impacts of mental health symptoms on PrEP uptake and continued use during pregnancy and breastfeeding among pregnant and postpartum persons in South Africa.
METHODS: PrEP-naive pregnant and postpartum people (PPP) with elevated depression and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms completed qualitative interviews between May 2022 and May 2023. Interviews probed t

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help are both critical determinants of mental health outcomes during pregnancy and early postpartum. However, their longitudinal and reciprocal associations remain poorly understood.
METHODS: This multicenter prospective cohort study enrolled 1250 women during mid-pregnancy (T1) and followed them through late pregnancy (T2), 1 month postpartum (T3), and 3 months postpartum (T4). Depressive symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and help-seeking attitudes were assessed with t

BACKGROUND: Postpartum women living with HIV (WLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa face intersecting structural, psychological, and social challenges. HIV-related stigma, including experienced, anticipated, and internalized dimensions, has been linked to poor mental health outcomes. However, little is known about how these distinct stigma mechanisms interact to influence depression in Ghanaian WLWH. This study aimed to examine whether internalized stigma mediates the relationship between experienced or anticipated HIV stigma and depressive symptoms among pregnant and postpartum WLWH in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: About 24.1% of pregnant women suffer from at least 1 anxiety disorder, 8.5% of whom suffer specifically from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). GAD is often associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). During the perinatal period, the presence of physical and somatic symptoms often makes differentiation between depression and anxiety more challenging. To date, no screening tools have been developed to detect GAD in the perinatal population. We investigated the psychometric properties of the GAD 7-item Scale (GAD-7) as a screening tool for GAD in pregnant and postpartum women.

INTRODUCTION: A mental health epidemic exists in women of color who are pregnant, with alarming rates of depression and anxiety. Furthermore, the majority of these women do not receive treatment because of inadequate screening, mental health stigma, and lack of access to mental health care professionals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 6-week and 6-month postpartum effects of the Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE)-Pregnancy (COPE-P) program, administered by midwives, compared with a health promotion education program on mental health and healthy lifestyle beha

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) negatively affects maternal well-being and early child development (ECD). While research often focuses on the early postpartum depression, symptoms can emerge or persist later in the first year, potentially affecting mothers and children differently at this stage. Yet, the 12-month postpartum period remains understudied globally, particularly in low-resourced settings where contextual stressors are pronounced. This study addresses the urgent need to understand later-stage postpartum depression and how it influences child development at 18 months, a criti

BACKGROUND: The emotional bond that a mother senses to her infant is essential to their social, emotional, and cognitive development. Understanding the level of mother-infant bonding plays an imperative role in the excellence of care. However, in Lebanon, there is a paucity of information about mother-infant bonding in the postpartum period. Given that Lebanese pregnant women constitute an important part of the population to look at, the objectives of the study were to (1) validate the Arabic version of the mother-infant bonding scale and (2) the relation between mother-infant bond and postpar

Despite the increase in the prevalence of postpartum depression among maternal disorder, its treatment outcomes remain suboptimal. Studies have shown that exercise can reduce postpartum depressive episodes in the mother, but the effects of exercise during pregnancy on maternal behavior and the potential mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. From the second day of pregnancy to the day of birth, dams exercised for 1 h a day by running on a controlled wheel. The maternal behaviors of the dams were assessed on postpartum day 2 to postpartum day 8. Chronic restraint stress was applied from

While there has been concern over the perinatal mental health implications of the COVID-19 outbreak, evidence on the risk of postpartum depression and anxiety following SARS-CoV-2 infection is limited. We studied this question using the International Registry of Coronavirus Exposure in Pregnancy, which included both a prospective and retrospective cohort. Study participants were required to have been tested for SARS-CoV-2 between the date of last menstrual period and delivery. The exposure of interest was SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy, as well as COVID-19 severity (severe, moderate, mi

PURPOSE: Posttraumatic stress (PTSD) and depression (PPD) are common mental disorders in the postpartum that constitute a threat both to the mother and the baby. It is unclear whether both disorders share similar antecedents, which is important to plan efficient interventions. The goal of this study was to examine the contribution of set of biopsychosocial predictors on both PTSD and PPD.
METHODS: The study design was prospective. The study was conducted at Hospital Universitario de Fuenlabrada, a public university hospital located in the south of Madrid (Spain). The sample was composed of 11

BACKGROUND: Preoperative sleep disturbances in parturients undergoing cesarean section correlate with exacerbated postoperative pain and an elevated risk of postpartum depression. Although esketamine demonstrates analgesic and antidepressant benefits in the general cesarean population, its combined effects on sleep, analgesia, and mood remain poorly characterized in patients with pre-existing sleep impairment. This study investigated the efficacy of an esketamine‑containing induction regimen on postoperative sleep quality, analgesia, and early depressive symptoms in parturients with PSQI‑defin
