Comparing the Self-Reported Personality Disorder Traits and Childhood Traumatic Experiences Between Patients With Schizophrenia Vs. Major Depressive Disorder.

Introduction: Personality disorder (PD) and childhood traumatic experience (CTE) are well- recognized risk factors for the development of schizophrenia (SZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD). The relationship between CTE and PD is extremely close, and both conditions can affect subsequent psychiatric disorders. Little is known about the differences of these factors in patients with SZ and those with MDD. Materials and Methods: A total of 1,026 outpatients participated in the study, including 533 (51.9%) with SZ and 493 (48.1%) with MDD who were sequentially sampled. The PD traits were assess…

Comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder: The usefulness of a sequential treatment approach within a randomised design.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Behavioural Activation Therapy (BA) were used to treat individuals with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Fifty-two individuals (48 women, 4 men) were randomized to CPT alone (n = 18), CPT then BA for MDD (n = 17), or BA then CPT (n = 17). Presenting trauma was primarily interpersonal (87 %). Participants were assessed at pre-, posttreatment, and 6-month follow-up. PTSD and MDD symptoms were the main outcome of interest; trauma cognitions, rumination, and emotional numbing were secondary outcomes. All group…

Transdiagnostic Dysfunctions in Brain Modules Across Patients with Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder: A Connectome-Based Study.

Psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), share clinical and neurobiological features. Because previous investigations of functional dysconnectivity have mainly focused on single disorders, the transdiagnostic alterations in the functional connectome architecture of the brain remain poorly understood. We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 512 participants, including 121 with SCZ, 100 with BD, 108 with MDD, and 183 healthy controls. Individual functional brain connectomes were constructe…

Lifetime cocaine use is a potential predictor for conversion from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder: A prospective study.

AIM: We aimed to identify whether lifetime cocaine use is a risk factor for conversion from major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder (BD) in an outpatient sample of adults. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 585 subjects aged 18 to 60 years who had been diagnosed with MDD as assessed by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-Plus) at baseline (2012-2015). Subjects were reassessed a mean of 3 years later (2017-2018) for potential conversion to BD as assessed by the MINI-Plus. Lifetime cocaine use was assessed using the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance In…

Bidirectional Association between First-Episode Panic Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder in a Nationwide General Population Survey in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) can occur concurrently, despite different clinical manifestations. Because MDD and PD patients tend to have more complicated conditions, understanding the co-occurrence and pattern of these conditions is important. Here, we investigated the influence of PD and MDD on each other, with respect to time interval. METHODS: Data from three national representative surveys were pooled (total 18,807 respondents), and the age of onset (AOO) of PD and MDD was analyzed. We performed Kaplan-Meier analysis to estimate separate survival fun…

Combining baseline characteristics to disentangle response differences to disorder-specific versus supportive psychotherapy in patients with persistent depressive disorder.

Does the pre-treatment profile of individuals with persistent depressive disorder (PDD) moderate their benefit from disorder-specific Cognitive Behavioral System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) versus supportive psychotherapy (SP)? We investigated this question by analyzing data from a multi-center randomized clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of 48 weeks of CBASP to SP in n  =  237 patients with early-onset PDD who were not taking antidepressant medication. We statistically developed an optimal composite moderator as a weighted combination of 13 preselected baseline variables and used it for…

Long noncoding RNA as an indicator differentiating schizophrenia from major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder in nonpsychiatric hospital.

AIM: Depression and anxiety are common symptoms for schizophrenia (SZ) in the early onset. This study aimed to determine whether long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) can be indicators for diagnosing SZ in nonpsychiatric hospitals. MATERIALS & METHODS: Three upregulated SZ lncRNAs, six downregulated major depressive disorder (MDD) lncRNAs and three upregulated generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) lncRNAs were cross-validated in 45 SZ patients, 48 MDD patients, 52 GAD patients and 40 controls by reverse transcription-PCR. RESULTS: Three SZ lncRNAs were significantly downregulated in GAD patients. The e…

A network approach to the comorbidity between posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder: The role of overlapping symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The role of symptom overlap between major depressive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder in comorbidity between two disorders is unclear. The current study applied network analysis to map the structure of symptom associations between these disorders. METHODS: Data comes from a sample of 909 Australian adults with a lifetime history of trauma and depressive symptoms. Data analysis consisted of the construction of two comorbidity networks of PTSD/MDD with and without overlapping symptoms, identification of the bridging symptoms, and computation of the centrality measures. RE…

Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder in Pregnant and Postpartum Women: Maternal Quality of Life and Treatment Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Comorbid generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) in perinatal women is often under-diagnosed, resulting in suboptimal treatment and leading to significant maternal dysfunction. We describe a prospective, longitudinal study of the course, treatment outcomes, and quality of life (QoL) in pregnant and postpartum women with MDD and anxiety disorders. METHODS: Two separate cohorts of women were recruited through the Reproductive Mental Health Program, Women's and Children's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, for pharmacotherapy of depressed mood. Altered functional connectivity in posttraumatic stress disorder with versus without comorbid major depressive disorder: a resting state fMRI study.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that is often diagnosed with comorbid depressive disorder. Therefore, neuroimaging studies investigating PTSD typically include both patients with and without comorbid depression. Differences in activity of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and insula have been shown to differentiate PTSD patients with and without major depressive disorder (MDD). Whether or not comorbid MDD affects resting state functional connectivity of PTSD patients has not been investigated to our knowledge. Here, resting state functional connectivity of PTSD pa…

Single episode of major depressive disorder. First episode of recurrent mood disorder or distinct subtype of late-onset depression?

Of 687 consecutive inpatients and outpatients with primary major depressive illness, 213 (31%) were categorized as single episode (SE) by DSM-III-R criteria. Systematic evaluation of familial, sociodemographic, temperamental and symptomatological characteristics permitted the nearly equal division of SE into two categories: a. early-onset (< 45 years) "first episode" superimposed on either depressive or hyperthymic temperaments (against a bipolar and unipolar familial background), more severe depression, higher rates of suicide attempts, greater anxiety-somatization and psychotic tendencies, a

Interleukin-1β is associated with depressive episode in major depression but not in bipolar disorder.

Our work was sought to investigate possible changes in peripheral levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) according to the diagnosis of major depression (MD) and bipolar disorder (BD) and in different mood episodes. This is a cross-sectional nested in a population-based study comparing 240 young adults (80 controls, 80 MD and 80 BD), balanced for age and gender. Serum levels of IL-1β were significantly higher in MD when compared to control or BD subjects. In addition, when divided by current mood episode, MD subjects in current depression presented higher IL-1β levels than controls. No differences in

Dimensions of the inventory of depressive symptomatology as predictors of the course of depressive and anxiety disorders.

For depressive and anxiety disorders general course characteristics are known. However, prognosis varies among patients with the same diagnosis. The current study investigated whether the more homogeneous symptom dimensions of mood/cognition and anxiety/arousal, could be used to predict more differentiated prognoses than with overall course-categories. One-thousand-and-fifty-three subjects with a depressive and/or anxiety disorder from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) were assessed at baseline and at 2-year follow-up. Dimensions of mood/cognition and anxiety/arousal were

Effects of erythropoietin on depressive symptoms and neurocognitive deficits in depression and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depression and bipolar disorder are associated with reduced neural plasticity and deficits in memory, attention and executive function. Drug treatments for these affective disorders have insufficient clinical effects in a large group and fail to reverse cognitive deficits. There is thus a need for more effective treatments which aid cognitive function. Erythropoietin (Epo) is involved in neuroplasticity and is a candidate for future treatment of affective disorders. The investigators have demonstrated that a single dose of Epo improves cognitive function and reduces neurocognitive

Prevalence of anxiety disorders comorbidity in bipolar depression, unipolar depression and dysthymia.

Eighty-seven patients with current episode of depression were assessed by the SCID-P and subdivided in bipolar depressives (N = 24), unipolar depressives (n = 38) and dysthymics (n = 25). Anxiety disorders comorbidity in these three groups was investigated by means of the SCID-P. Panic disorder comorbidity was found in 36.8% of bipolar depressives, 31.4% of unipolar depressives and 13% of dysthymics. Prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder was 21.1% in bipolars, 14.3% in unipolars and 8.7% in dysthymics. Generalized anxiety disorder resulted in being much more associated with dysthymia (65

Imipramine and chlordiazepoxide in depressive and anxiety disorders. I. Efficacy in depressed outpatients.

We randomly assigned 425 outpatients, independently classified as primarily depressed by two trained psychiatrists, to double-blind treatment with Imipramine hydrochloride, chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride, or placebo. Those patients who remained at least moderately depressed (following a two-week placebo washout period) were treated for an additional eight weeks. An endpoint analysis of 387 patients who completed two or more weeks of medication disclosed early therapeutic advantages of chlordiazepoxide. By week 4 of treatment, however, imipramine produced more improvement than did placebo and c

Depression, Anxiety, and Bipolar Disorder and Atherosclerosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes the complex relationships between depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder with atherosclerosis by discussing epidemiological evidence, implicated mechanisms, and the impact of psychiatric interventions on cardiovascular outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder convey independent risk for atherosclerosis. Further, the presence of cardiovascular disease often contributes to worsened psychiatric symptoms. Current evidence supports a rising prevalence of psychiatric disorders in association with atherosclerosis and demographic

Personality Traits and Inflammation in Depressive Disorders.

Depression is a psychiatric disorder of heterogeneous etiology. One of the leading theories suggests an inflammatory background to it. It is often found in the scientific literature that certain personality traits, such as high neuroticism, low extroversion and conscientiousness, are being associated with depression. We combined biochemical tests of IL-1 and IL-6 serum levels and scores in the personality test EPQ-R among 50 depressed patients and 37 healthy participants. The results confirmed increased serum levels of IL-1 and IL-6 in a study group when compared to healthy volunteers. Additio
