Histopathologic features of pyotraumatic dermatitis.

The skin of 17 dogs with pyotraumatic dermatitis was studied microscopically. Two patterns were seen. The first pattern was a superficial, ulcerative, inflammatory process of undetermined cause and pathogenesis. Current recommended treatment, which includes corticosteroids, was believed to be appropriate for such lesions. The second pattern, suppurative folliculitis, was considered to be localized pyoderma. Dogs with severe folliculitis were believed to represent those cases of pyotraumatic dermatitis in which the response to corticosteroid treatment has been poor. It was concluded that antibi…

Allergic contact dermatitis from bacitracin.

Bacitracin is a commonly used topical antibiotic. Although occasional reports of adverse reactions to bacitracin have appeared in the medical literature, it is considered to be a nonsensitizing agent by most dermatologists. A description of two patients who demonstrated allergic contact dermatitis from bacitracin is presented, with a review of the pertinent literature.

Dietary management of dermatitis herpetiformis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is an extremely itchy, papulovesicular skin disease characterized in part by the presence of IgA at the dermal-epidermal junction. Eighty-five percent to 90% of DH patients have granular deposits of IgA at the dermal-epidermal junction, and essentially all of these patients have an associated, for the most part asymptomatic, gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE). The association of GSE and DH suggested that the cutaneous manifestations of DH could be controlled by the use of a gluten-free diet. Institution of a gluten-free diet in patients with DH and granular IgA de…

Dermatitis herpetiformis and growth retardation.

We report a juvenile patient with dermatitis herpetiformis, growth retardation and delayed onset of puberty. All symptoms reversed on gluten withdrawal and drug therapy was not required. It is suggested that dermatitis herpetiformis in this patient is the result of long-standing coeliac disease.
