The authors investigated the ultrastructure of the epidermis of two children who suffered from the staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (or the Ritter's type of toxic epidermal necrolysis). This syndrome is attributed to the action of an exfoliative toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus phage group II. We investigated the population structure of Staphylococcus aureus clonal complex CC121 by mutation discovery at 115 genetic housekeeping loci from each of 154 isolates, sampled on five continents between 1953 and 2009. In addition, we pyro-sequenced the genomes from ten representative isolates. INTRODUCTION: Serious adverse drug reactions are common in hospitalised patients. There have been few studies examining the clinical presentation, implicated drugs and outcomes in Singapore.

The X-linked mutation, scurfy (sf), causes a fatal lymphoreticular disease characterized by runting, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, hypergammaglobulinemia, exfoliative dermatitis, Coombs'-positive anemia, and death by 24 days of age. 39 patients (Group A) with ocular onchocerciasis in the Sudan-savanna of north Cameroon were given 4-6 g of suramin and followed in detail over 1-2 years. 39 other patients (Group B) received suramin followed 2 weeks later by a 6-7 day course of diethylcarbamazine (DEC).
