Positive patch test reactions to oxidized limonene: exposure and relevance.

BACKGROUND: R-Limonene is a common fragrance terpene found in domestic and industrial products. R-Limonene autoxidizes on air exposure, and the oxidation products can cause contact allergy. In a recent multicentre study, 5.2% (range 2.3-12.1%) of 2900 patients showed a positive patch test reaction to oxidized R-limonene. OBJECTIVE: To study the exposure to limonene among consecutive dermatitis patients reacting to oxidized R-limonene in an international setting, and to assess the relevance of the exposure for the patients' dermatitis. METHODS: Oxidized R-limonene 3.0% (containing limonene hy

Contact dermatitis mimickers: a tertiary care center's experience.

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis (CD) is very common but can be mimicked by numerous dermatologic conditions. Thus, a wide differential must be considered before a definitive diagnosis of CD is made to ensure the patient receives appropriate treatment and follow-up. OBJECTIVE: To describe conditions that can present similarly to contact dermatitis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients referred to the Occupational Disease Specialized Program at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto between 2009 and 2011 for CD investigations but with a final diagnosis other than CD. RESULTS: We report cas

European Society of Contact Dermatitis Guideline for Diagnostic Patch Testing-Recommendations on Best Practice (Update 2026).

The present guideline updates the initial ESCD patch testing guideline, summarizing all aspects of patch testing for the diagnosis of contact allergy in patients suspected of suffering, or having been suffering, from allergic contact dermatitis or other delayed-type hypersensitivity skin and mucosal conditions. Sections with brief descriptions and discussions of different pertinent topics are followed by highlighted short practical recommendations, which have been consensualized in a Delphi process. Topics comprise, after an introduction with important definitions, materials, technique, modifi

Effectiveness of Barrier Creams against Irritant Contact Dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Skin tissue is frequently exposed to various irritant substances in the workplace, particularly in wet work, which can lead to the development of occupational contact dermatitis. 'Barrier' creams (BCs) are well known, and their applications are still the subject of many studies and controversies. METHODS: We searched all controlled trials investigating BCs against cutaneous irritants in humans published between 1956 and December 2014 from MEDLINE, PubMed, reference lists and existing reviews. RESULTS: Thirty-nine studies about the effects of BCs against skin irritants in humans

[How to test occupational products brought in by patients].

Where allergic investigations are carried out for occupational dermatitis, appropriate tests must be performed but commercially available batteries are not always suitable for the working conditions and for the products handled by patients. During testing, the products being handled must thus be correctly diluted with full knowledge of their composition in order to prevent harmful effects, particularly caustic effects, and to avoid false positives and false negatives.

Allergic contact dermatitis to ethylenediamine. A continuing problem.

Ethylenediamine would be an infrequent sensitizer if it were not present in a widely prescribed topical corticosteroid preparation that is applied to inflamed skin. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis to ethylenediamine is not common. The educational efforts of American dermatologists such as Dr. Alex Fisher have helped lead to the deletion of ethylenediamine from Mycolog cream. It is unfortunate that the same pharmaceutical company continues to use ethylenediamine in its products in other countries, as the continued popularity of these creams may allow ethylenediamine to remain a common

Investigation of an outbreak of photodermatitis confined to one shop in a large factory.

Out of 106 men employed in a foundry attached to a large factory, 29 men developed a photosensitization dermatitis over the period of three months. Three men out of 1,700 employed in the remainder of the works developed a similar eruption, but no common factor was apparent. Owing to the very high incidence in the foundry, a sensitizer associated with the process was suspected and it seemed likely that it would prove to be an atmospheric contaminant. Many chemical investigations and skin tests were carried out without positive result, though much interesting information regarding combustion pro

Occupational airborne contact allergy to tetrazepam in a geriatric nurse.

A 52-year-old geriatric nurse presented with recurrent eczema localized in uncovered skin areas. Patch testing produced an eczematous skin reaction with type IV sensitization totetrazepam. A relapse of contact dermatitis was successfully prevented by using occupational skin protection measures and organizational measures. Our case indicates that a sensitization to drugs should be considered when allergic contact dermatitisis suspected in nursing personnel.

Lettuce contact allergy.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and its varieties are important vegetable crops worldwide. They are also well-known, rarely reported, causes of contact allergy. As lettuce allergens and extracts are not commercially available, the allergy may be underdiagnosed. The aims of this article are to present new data on lettuce contact allergy and review the literature. Lettuce is weakly allergenic, and occupational cases are mainly reported. Using aimed patch testing in Compositae-allergic patients, two recent Danish studies showed prevalence rates of positive lettuce reactions of 11% and 22%. The majori

Identification and practical management of latex allergy in occupational settings.

Allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) from Hevea brasiliensis is a relevant occupational health hazard. The use of gloves and products manufactured with latex and environmental allergen exposure in the work environment are risks factors for the development of occupational allergy among different job categories. Healthcare workers have been the most commonly affected, but other professions with exposure to latex products such as hairdressers, cleaners, food handlers and those making natural rubber latex (NRL) products are also at risk of developing occupational allergy. Clinical manifestations
