Skin diseases in Greek and immigrant children in Athens.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the spectrum of skin diseases affecting children in Greece. METHODS: We retrospectively studied data for 4071 children, aged 0-12 years, who were examined and diagnosed with dermatoses at the outpatient clinic of a university dermatological hospital between December 2005 and August 2007. To evaluate changes in disease patterns, these data were compared with data for a cohort of 12,700 children diagnosed with skin diseases at the same clinic two to three decades earlier (in 1977, 1980, and 1983). RESULTS: The most frequent disease was dermatitis/ec

Keratosis lichenoides chronica: a case report with dermatoscopic and ultrasonographic analysis.

We present the case of a 46-year-old woman with a long-standing history of linear erythematosquamous papules on the arms and thighs, which were unresponsive to treatment with topical corticosteroids. She also reported lesions typical of seborrheic dermatitis located on her face. After performing a clinical examination, dermatoscopy, high-frequency ultrasonography (HFUS), and a biopsy for histopathological examination, a diagnosis of keratosis lichenoides chronica (KLC) was obtained. Also known as Nekam disease, KLC is a rare, chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by diffuse, linearly

Henna-induced hemolytic anemia and acute renal failure.

Henna is a traditional cosmetic agent and is used worldwide, especially in the Middle East. Its active agent is lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone). Henna is not only applied to hands or hair as a cosmetic agent in traditional ceremonies, but is also applied to the body on lesions in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis or fungal infections. However, its application over the body or in newborns is rare. Here we report a 27-day-old boy who developed hemolytic anemia and acute renal failure following topical application of henna to his abdomen, intertriginous region and legs to treat diaper

Pityriasis amiantacea.

Pityriasis amiantacea is an easily recognizable cutaneous disease that is characterized by scaling of the scalp and temporary alopecia. The scaling, described as thick and asbestos-like, binds down tufts of hair. The alopecia may be temporary or scarring. Despite a well-established clinical description, no definitive etiology has been uncovered. This disease may represent seborrheic dermatitis, superficial fungal or pyogenic infections, lichen planus, or psoriasis. Histologically, the disease is characterized by eczematous features. We report a case of pityriasis amiantacea in an 11-year-old g

The Pityrosporon yeasts. Their role as pathogens.

P. orbiculare (P. ovale), a member of the normal human cutaneous flora, is also an opportunistic pathogen, and the association with tinea versicolor is well-documented. Recently, the Pityrosporon yeasts have been associated with several other diseases. That Pityrosporon folliculitis is a separate disease is now documented. The association with CRP and with some cases of psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis seem probable but are not yet fully proven. Reports show that P. orbiculare (P. ovale) are involved not only in dermatologic diseases, again indicating that the organisms are not "harmless" s

Epidemiological study of periocular dermatitis in a specialised hospital department.

Contact dermatitis is frequent skin pathology and eyelids are one of the more frequent locations of this pathology. The objective of the present work was to study the population distribution of periocular dermatitis, determine the allergens which most frequently indicate positive in patch tests and in provocative use tests, and analyse the clinical relevance of the positive tests.Patients with periocular dermatitis (N=93) underwent a thorough physical examination and a patch test with standard series. According to clinical suspicions, 76 patients underwent a patch test with specific series. Fi

JunB defines functional and structural integrity of the epidermo-pilosebaceous unit in the skin.

Transcription factors ensure skin homeostasis via tight regulation of distinct resident stem cells. Here we report that JunB, a member of the AP-1 transcription factor family, regulates epidermal stem cells and sebaceous glands through balancing proliferation and differentiation of progenitors and by suppressing lineage infidelity. JunB deficiency in basal progenitors results in a dermatitis-like syndrome resembling seborrheic dermatitis harboring structurally and functionally impaired sebaceous glands with a globally altered lipid profile. A fate switch occurs in a subset of JunB deficient ep

Dermatological manifestation of HIV infection: systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Since its discovery in 1981, AIDS has become a significant global public health issue, impacting more than 38 million people worldwide with HIV. Despite a 32% reduction in new HIV infections since 2010, millions continue to be affected, often experiencing dermatological problems. This study aims to examine the epidemiology of these dermatological issues in HIV patients by reviewing existing research. METHODS: We conducted an extensive search across MEDLINE, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and grey literature, encompassing all languages and publications from 1975 to November 30,

[Cutaneous Malassezia infections and Malassezia associated dermatoses: An update].

The lipophilic yeast fungus Malassezia (M.) spp. is the only fungal genus or species which is part of the physiological human microbiome. Today, at least 14 different Malassezia species are known; most of them can only be identified using molecular biological techniques. As a facultative pathogenic microorganism, Malassezia represents the causative agent both of superficial cutaneous infections and of blood stream infections. Pityriasis versicolor is the probably most frequent infection caused by Malassezia. Less common, Malassezia folliculitis occurs. There is only an episodic report on Malas

Common inflammatory skin diseases of the elderly.

Elderly patients are more likely than the general population to have significant cutaneous diseases due to structural changes, alteration of immunologic response, and different environmental influences. This review focuses on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of the most common inflammatory dermatoses likely to be encountered in the geriatric population.

Involvement of the external ear by inflammatory skin diseases.

Chronic inflammatory skin disorders comprise frequent and rare dermatoses. The etiology of these diseases is broad and ranges from genetic factors to environmental and lifestyle issues. In this review, we focus on afflictions of the auricle by the eczema group, psoriasis, and pityriasis rubra pilaris, autoimmune disorders like relapsing polychondritis and cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and juvenile spring dermatosis. The anatomy of this particular region can alter the clinical presentation, course, and treatment options for these skin disorders. Atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and ps…

Thiol-Disulfide Homeostasis in Skin Diseases.

Oxidative stress represents the imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants and has been associated with a wide range of diseases. Thiols are the most important compounds in antioxidant defense. There is an equilibrium between thiols and their oxidized forms, disulfides, known as dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH). In 2014, Erel and Neselioglu developed a novel automated assay to measure thiol and disulfide levels. Subsequently, many researchers have used this simple, inexpensive and fast method for evaluating TDH in various disorders. We have reviewed the literature on the role of TDH
