An automated melanocytic lesion image-analysis algorithm is described that aims to reproduce the decision-making of a dermatologist. The utility of the algorithm lies in its ability to identify lesions requiring excision from lesions not requiring excision. Using only wavelet coefficients as features, and testing three different machine learning algorithms, a cohort of 250 images of pigmented lesions is classified based on expert dermatologists' recommendations of either excision (165 images) or no excision (85 images). In this study, we developed a rat model of incisional pain. A 1-cm longitudinal incision was made through skin, fascia and muscle of the plantar aspect of the hindpaw in halothane-anesthetized rats. Using three different instruments, cryolesions were made in the skin of experimental animals (pigs) and the extent of necrosis was determined after one week. The most efficient device was a probe using liquid nitrogen; the amount of tissue killed varied directly with contact time. Patients present during pregnancy with a variety of dermatologic conditions, most of which can be treated conservatively with topical medication by a primary obstetrician if he or she is familiar with common treatment options. Patients with moderate to severe forms of dermatologic disease or those requiring systemic therapy should be treated in consultation with a dermatologist. Dermatologic surgery can be performed safely in the second trimester using local anesthesia if needed.
